Uhmm... you do recall that the floor used to really and actually, literally bounce...(Stadium speakers in an authentic garage. )that's when the colored tissue paper would rain down on the floor causing the masses to resemble a bunch of drunken astronauts trying to walk on the moon. Needless to say, any substance one consumed would, along with the dizzying lights, complete the effect. The term "Sultan's Jerk" was the name given to the revelers who mastered this other worldly slip and slide, hop and scotch, twist and twirl, Olympic performance. Of course some would end up on the floor still dancing, never missing a beat.

this reminds me of a time in New York when the big clubs were in full swing and the energy of the city was creative, pulsating and carfree and you felt on top of th world. We lost that and a part of the city died with that time but the music lives on......

This is a great R&B track. More though, this is an awesome disco record. Everything that made the first few years of disco awesome is represented in this unbelievable song. The last 90 seconds nearly makes my head explode. At least 4 to 5 years ahead of its time. When I say I love disco, this is the kind of music I'm speaking of.

Oh, lordy, those bongo drums!!!! My friends thought I was too button-down preppie for my own good and took me to the Continental Baths one night my junior year in college in 1973. I remember dancing to the instrumental break of this song next to dudes in towels and one screamingly elegant drag queen who was off on some other dance planet. By the time those horns came on at the end, I was in ecstasy that I remember vividly to this day. Bathhouses and drag queens, you bet. Those were SOME days!

Few "underground" pre-disco classics inspire so much enthusiasm and loyalty to 2016 as this 1972 icon of a dance classic! This song not only kept Kendrick's classic 60s Temptations' voice in the clubs, but also was innovative in myriad ways to affect the next 40 - going on 50 years of house r&b dance disco music - thank you for posting this truly wonderful song!! DAVEDJ also, while this was being enjoyed in Manhattan from such clubs as The Loft & Paradise Garage, it was also burning up the dance floor at Pete's Place, Le Directoire & La Boucherie in New Orleans!! This man's voice rules in 60s Motown, 1970s to now, 2017...

Wow, this classic takes me way back when I was a sophomore in Hs. This song was relevant and focused, primarily because the times of all women started to change. What I am attempting to say is, the women's liberation movement of the 70' s was in full swing. I can also, say, back during that time women marched frequently trying to change the realities they faced, sexism and discrimination. Great era, and Eddie definitely focused on the trials and tribulations with this song.

Never had the opportunity to see the Temptations nor Eddie Kendricks when he went solo, however he was my all time "favorite" singer if I must choose one!!! But this song here still to today gets the crowd moving and dancing especially if they know anything about music...ijs

great comments.... been to the garage many times, and listened to Larry. even worked there a few times. there was a cat that would spin records at Pegasus named Lindsay.. this dude was so fast, he could cut "never" over and over, with out missing. then let it play "never try to change"

I've never heard a song like this before or since. If any song was designed to induce prolonged states of ecstacy this is it. This is far more powerful that anything else that I've heard in disco or any other genre. Pure ecstasy and I can say that since I was in that parallel universe called punk rock back in the day. If anything, this song heralds the beginning of disco for many and really let's the world know: Oil up and get out the glitter boys and girls. Here comes the Seventies. . . . :D

Ansar al-Zindiqi very well said !!... Disco's premier song and sound... yes, even before the awesome "loves theme"… I think this is disco's very first true song… Not Proto… Pure.

There are still places/parties to hear real DJs perform. And there are some great young DJs who know how to play music like this, and new works coming out. Jimmy DePre from Philadelphia comes to mind as a DJ. Come to Evolution this Sunday in NYC for new house music in the classic mode.
