I just watched it on the Criterion channel. I always watch The Phantom Carriage around New Years and this movie is going to be added to that yearly viewing. One of the best film noirs I've seen.

I usually do not like Mueller’s take on his movies. And he did it again in his closing comment when he characterized Richard Basehart’s character William Williams as a gay man. In the beginning of the movie, there’s a scene where William Williams is pulling petals off of a flower and saying she loves me, she loves me not. It’s obvious that William Williams loved Sheila page. I don’t know why Eddie gets off track but he does it frequently. And this is a prime example. But I’m glad Eddie showed this movie, however, because this is the movie I discovered the wondrous Virginia Field. And I think Louis Hayward’s performance was fantastic. The critics may have thought he was chewing up the scenery, but an actor is supposed to show us the inner workings of the mind and in this case the decline of the playwright and his growing hatred for his wife. Repeat performance is one of my favorite movies and I think from start to finish it’s a story well told and well performed. I’m glad they changed it around from the book. But I also know that if they had kept the original story, Sylvia Sidney would’ve been fantastic as the wife.
