The act that just couldn't be caged, Eddie Palmieri and Harlem River
Drive broke into one of America's most infamous penitentiaries for a 1971
set that saw release on two volumes of LPs. For this first volume, Palmieri
and company work the crowd with a torrid set of songs, including "Pa la
Ocha Tambo," "Muñeca," and a fervent closer, "Azucar." Electric guitar and bass
(from Cornell Dupree and Hank Anderson, respectively) modernize the proceedings
quite well, and Palmieri's brother Charlie sits in on organ with a special feature for
"V.P. Blues."
Poet Felipe Luciano also stirs up the crowd, as does Paquito Navarro's declaration,
"For all mankind, there should be never no walls, never no fears, only one thing in life:
libertyin the coming years."

Hi Johnny First of all,My full name is Jose Roberto Schneider age 69 born and living in N.Y. My mother was from Ponce Puerto Rico and my father was from Germany. One of my hobbies is singing bolero's with my guitar. My trip with Eddie to Sing Sing to this day I regret not making a movie about it. Of all places, We all had to meet in the Bronx where the bus was waiting that Saterday morning and Eddie made sure we had plenty of Cafe Con Leache and food. Eddie was very exited about It.

All the entertainment for inmates was the result of the Attica Rebellion. Frank Bonilla's Centro de Estudios Puertorriquenos staff visited Greenhaven Correctional Facility in 1973. The Centro's ladies danced with the inmates that afternoon. I remember an inmate named Panama dancing with one the ladies Estilo Panama. This album by Palmieri was the first actually recorded behind the walls of the notorious Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Our generation cared for their community!!!!! We made the Corrections' Dept. responsible for ultimate care of incarcerated Puerto Ricans and the community in general. It was Johnny Colon who played at Greenhaven in 1973. These memories of great music played from the heart resound in my mind. TY Johnnynoirman 4 the opportunity to revisit the past in such a positive light.

The results of allowing salsa bands to play in person in NYS prison settings are insurmountable. The good will and positive light cannot be measured. Our cultural message was warmly received by the inmates and I can only hope that we significantly impacted on the high rate of recidivism in our community. Mr. Johnnynoirman, I do hope that your efforts are rewarded. Your originality and skills are so badly needed in today's criminal justice system. I personally feel that all the progress that we made in the post Attica prison setting has been reversed. Nowadays, the gang element considers prison fashionable and a necessary part of life. Pls keep posting these great videos and let s hope that it can help reverse the lawlessness and negativity of today's lifestyle. Thanks again.

Esa mania de mucha gente de siempre poner a los musicos como: Fulano de tal "el mejor sonero" sutano el "más bravo" de aquello, mengano el "papá" de esto. Señor, cada cosa tiene su lugar sin necesidad de opacar a nadie o a nada. Ismael Quintana en lo suyo y los demás en lo de ellos. Más bien se debieran referir a: fulano de tal, "el que más me gusta a mi" y así con los demás Es su gusto no su imposición de su parecer. Es pesado leer acerca de los artistas en esos parametros limitados. Estoy seguro que si le preguntaban o le decian a Ismael Quintana si despues de él nohabíamás nada, él sería el primero en decir que eso no era verdad y le daba credito a los demás. Saludos

Así es. Cada uno aprecia lo que mejor le parece. Unos la melodía, otros la voz, otros el swing. Aunque yo, con 39 años y del otro lado del charco, enamorado de ese flow que se dice hoy, porque todo viene de ahí. los pollitos de hoy bailan en los clubs ritmos como si oyesen campanas y no saben de donde vienen. Esto es el origen de todo... En 1964-65-66-67 surgieron los primeros temas bailables en USA y en sus letras todos hacían referncia a estos pollos. Judge Suds, James Brown, Jerrio... los primeros temas de Funk (que es el origen de toda la música de baile posterior), en sus letras SEÑORES, esto es absolutamente cierto, ya se referían al boogaloo de estos pollitos porque ESO FUE LO QUE CAMBIÓ LA FORMA DE BAILAR Y DISFRUTAR de los USA y del resto del mundo. Aquí está la madre... Y por otro lado, si tengo que decantarme por uno, para mí Eddie Palmieri es Dios, es más, y soy muy creyente, pero es lo que hay..

Por ahi hay un video completo de dos horas en blanco y negro grabado por Izzy en el parque central de NYC alla por el 1972. Esa era la epoca que la policia echaba a todos esos rumberos que tocaban ahi en el parque Aparece Harlow y junior gonzalez, la lupe , Frankie y la flamboyan al banda mas eccentrica de todas las bandas pero con mucho sabor, y al final charlie y eddie palmieri alborotaron el parque esa tarde, parecia un Woodstock latino.

After a week, filled with hard work, exhausted and frustrated, almost ever my first action was (and often today still is), to lay up this LP from Eddie. And when Ismael Quintana began to sing: "Hace tiempo que vengo cantando y sonando el tambo", I thought: "Yep, right! Éso es la verdad!!!" And at the latest, whith the begining of the refrain, all frustation flew away like the notes from Raymonds trumpet ... = ) Cool idea to connect this music with this film.( "20000 in Sing Sing", I think?)

Blues.. from the Valmones pal Monte outtakes--- My seagate external harddrive wont let me acess footage i've collected for 4 years... Crueldad en todos los artes. en este video hay imagens de alegria y violencia. todo juntos en el flow de montaje. en sequencias de surrealismo..
