Basically, a bully-boy scumbag who needed numbers-and-weapons ran into Gary and Gary wasn't having any of it. I've yet to hear anyone tell a story where Gary started it or went out looking for it. I've hear a lot of stories from people who knew/worked with Gary and they all say he was the nicest guy you'd ever meet, had a big heart for animals and children, he just didn't like people who tried to take advantage of others.

I met Gary Spiers once when I was a kid. I was involved in karate at the time and gained the rank of black belt (1st Dan in Shotokan style). I’d read maybe a month prior an interview with Snsei Spiers in a magazine called Fighting Arts (owned by my old teacher and Karate Master and Liverpool hard man, Terry O’Neil). Spiers was minding an arcade in Manchester and he was most affable and polite man. He autographed the magazine for me and we chatted for a long while.

There was a few nasty bullies round Toxteth in the 70's. Robbing people, beasting girls and even boys, terrorising clubs and pubs for protection or a few rounds of drinks. This is all before the D business was big money. When they died, usually violently people were glad and no one came forward to grass on his assailant

Gary Spiers and Terry O’Neil both formidable Gents ….Terrys Dojo was in Town around the corner from Shanks …took a visit one night ( I was a member of Sensei Jim Brennans club at Wavertree sports centre at the time ) we heard of him and wanted to visit his dojo …he said we could sit in but to keep quiet …I got to say he was giant of a man and a world class world level Shotokan Karate man ….Met Gary once and he was a giant of a man also with a great sense of humour ….I’m from Toxteth born n bred and it was crazy times back in my youth in the late seventies / eighties when i discovered night clubs most where safe and you could enjoy yourself but stray into the wrong one with the wrong crowd and you’d want to go home ….always some Bellend bully type not liking the cut of your Jib ….there was always a bit of North end South end of Liverpool friction ….there was never a dull moment plus Liverpool then and now a great city for a night out .

Beech Tree stabbed him as he sat in his car outside a club on the lower end of Park Road near the Aigburth Road end. Beech Tree was out and about by the early 80's. He was well known in Dingle. There was another nutter used to he seen in Liverpool city centre in the 80's. Panama. Apparently he killed his wife/gf with an axe. Used to be seen around in the pubs opposite Central Station. Again another well known face. Charlie Seiga was the guy in the frame for killing notorious taxman George Bromley Snr. Bromley used to bounce around Kensington and Old Swan areas dressed like a 16 yr old scally in a shellsuit whilst a man in his 30's. Bromley had gone to Seiga's house and Seiga was apparently preparing breakfast when an unknown assailant, according to Seiga, walked in through the French windows and blasted Bromley with a shotgun. Another notorious neonazi hardman, Joey Owens, was also suspected of shooting Bromley.

Growing up in Liverpool I've heard a lot of stories about most of these men. The one I remember is when the Krays came to Liverpool looking to "expand" Beach Keatley and his mates made sure the Krays didn't get off the train in Lime Street. They didn't come back. Has anyone else heard that story? I've heard it from several people so there is probably some truth to it.

Look up a guy called Tommy Doherty from Huyton then later Broadway in Norrisgreen. Trust me, they all feared him, he put most of these guys out, Charlie himself used to shake when his good mate Tommy used to kick off. He is still legendary in and around the City. Charlie’s story on what happened between him and Eddie is a bit misleading just like most of his stories are. It’s not quite what actually happened. There was a lot of Bad lads from Huyton, Tommy Doherty, Knoxy, Kirmo, Andawl Jensen, just to name a few. And they could all fight and strike fear into most people’s lives at the time. Charlie was never a fighter, he was a two bob con man, he’d take advantage of fools and Mugs and pull scams on insurance companies. He was sly though, and you could never turn your back on him, he was well known for pulling knives and Stanley blades on unaware victims who’d offended him in some way. There was a thousand gangs in Liverpool back in the day and every one of them always had a few that were always the hardest man in the City and who everyone was scared of. Same as in every city in the whole of Britain. I’m enjoying your stories though, so e are making me laugh though, because I know most of these guys that your mentioning Personally, and I know that a lot of the stories are a bit far fetched. But good luck doing what your doing 👍🏼 To my Dohert, I believe, now floats around West Derby , Charlie will put you on to him, but don’t hold your breath, he’s old school and probably won’t want to talk about anything from the past. It’s only the story stretchers like Charlie and the likes of Super Grass Darren Gee that can’t keep their mouths shut 🤣🤣🤣👍🏼
