Eddie explored the guitar like no one else ever before. He literally took it and got it to do things no one ever could before, then he literally turned it upside down and found new things to do with it and get new and different sounds from it. When you say Eddie Van Halen studied the guitar, that is the very thing he did with the guitar, studied it, explored it and squeezed things out of it no one ever did before. No one like him, Rest In Peace maestro, you were indeed the master of the guitar, miss you man. Stay Cool 😎 and… \m/ Stay Metal \m/

True, it's got to be pretty rare for any guitar legend to build his own guitar. The only other one that comes to mind is Brian May of Queen.

I never heard him reference that, but I can say that he was smoking and drinking beer that night and he was obviously in the right frame of mind to perform the most epic guitar solo that I've ever seen/heard. Sometimes the human brain relaxes and just lets all of the knowledge pour out without a filter...and a few beers will do that. No inhibitions and you're just giving everyone what you've got. He was the best. That's what I think of when I see a version of this "eruption solo". Eddie could and did play "hammered" sometimes. It's a testament to his ability that he could occasionally wreck himself and still produce such genius.

Actually Eddie didn’t pioneer finger tapping, it’s been around for a long time, even before rock music was around. Spanish Flamenco guitarists used tapping on acoustic guitars way, way before Eddie. That being said, Eddie took tapping and brought it to whole other level.

On of my favorite reactions so far. I'll be honest when I requested it I was expecting to see you tell me you had already seen it and ask if I wanted to swap it out. Hearing you tell why you hadn't seen it until now was very endearing. Ironically, starting your own channel finally led to to watching it after 20 years. That's pretty damn cool. I'm sorry to hear about your family member. I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer at a young age. Prayers go out to your family. I'm sure they will beat it! You're the best. @@THEDavidHeretic people appreciate honest reviews. I saw one the other day of someone saying they had never heard let it be. Seriously? There are 10 year olds in under developed countries who have heard let it be. People appreciate honest reviews that don't cater to what they think their channel wants in a score. If you think a song sucks you give an honest score no matter how popular the band or of it is a patreon member. One of my favorite parts of this review was learning technical things he was doing. Explaining what he was doing with the back of the guitar. You talk to your fans like intelligent adults and obviously its appreciated by how fast the channel keeps growing. Can't wait to see the Neil peart reaction next week. Stay awesome

I've watched this solo over 100 times easily and I never caught that he was pulling on the trem springs to make the sound. I always assumed based on the orientation of the guitar that he was pulling out the body rest that he had patented, so that he could be standing up but have the guitar essentially laying flat in front of him. One of several cool guitar patents Ed had. But I definitely hear the springs being plucked now that you said it.

Loved your reaction…. Thank you for taking me on a journey about the guitar and Eddies contribution to this art. I loved your spontaneity and enthusiasm about each motion and each technique. The guitar, Frankenstrat now hangs in the Smithsonian. There is a wonderful video of his interview with the Smithsonian, here on KZbin. You should watch it. He was a genuine humble guy with a kindness about him. I am aware he could also be a supreme a-hole. But the interview would interest you because he details his journey with the guitar. One thing you didn’t include in you reaction…. His face. This man had such joy with that guitar in his hands. His smile, his inner peace. That guitar was an extension of his soul. I agree 💯 with your comments on smoking. Let’s be honest the alcohol and cocaine did not help either. But there is one note that most don’t know or relate to Eddie’s early demise. When he was tapping, and not using the pick, he often tucked it in his mouth under his tongue. What he didn’t realize was the toxic level of lead in the pick. It is that exact location where the cancer started. Lead is so lethal. So many of my rock heroes have left us as older people. As I am aging as well, it makes me sad that they have left us behind. But gosh can you imagine the reception we will get in that concert in heaven with them all waiting there for us? RIP Eddie. Your leaving just broke me. 💔

The repeated / delay sound is Eddie using the volume control as a kill switch. There might be a small added delay but most of it is Eddie. He used his hands as he couldn't afford effects when the first album came out so a lot is just Eddie.
@ekgrafix
@ekgrafix 2 жыл бұрын
Really wrong info here. It is as he described it. It’s a echo at a certain rate that he is cutting the volume off in time to that echo so the next note can fit inside before the first echo. It’s easier to hear and watch happen on the lowest note he hits it once, but you hear it twice. So yes it’s an echo effect that he used to write a masterpiece with.
@RB-lt8kt
@RB-lt8kt 2 жыл бұрын
@@ekgrafix I didn't say NO delay. Most prob an echo / delay echo plex and phase or flange pedal but most of Eddie's sound came from him and his use of developed techniques. Not much distortion was used but gain from over driven Marshall and later Peavey amps (now Fender).

"It's Van Halen but it isn't Van Halen." Nope, it's Van Halen. The name of the band is taken from the brothers Alex (the eldest of the two) & Eddie Van Halen...Eddie doing the guitar & Alex doing the drums. It *IS* Van Halen in the most true sense of the phrase. 😁 When you first mentioned seeing Eddie toss his pick into the audience...Paying attention, it's easy to see that he did that multiple times during the solo. In general, the way Eddie's gestrues & facial expressions go when interacting with the audience, he absolutely loves what he's doing...That's how anyone can eventually get good at doing whatever they do. It's called "practice." But from this video I get the general impression that Eddie is sending a message (beyond the point of taking the audience on a mental/emotional journey of his own making), like "I've taken the time. I've put in the work. I know what I'm capable of doing. I'm glad to have this time to show you what that is." For instance, when you see him tapping with both hands up along the fingerboard, his hands are spaced apart just right to take advantage of the overlapping harmonic scales between different strings; he's using the harmonies of the instrument to play sequential notes faster than one hand can do... When you were talking about how Eddie plucked the springs in the back of the guitar...Well, Eddie not only built many of his own guitars from pieces that he wanted from other guitars, but he experimented a lot to create as many new sounds as he could discover. Then he worked to turn them into melodic harmonies. One thing that many of the newer generations miss when they listen to the older stuff like this is that, back then there were no auto-tuners, there were no sequencers or computer-controlled compensators. Many bands made use of distortion pedals to alter modulation but that was about it. Heck, keyboard synthesizers were still just barely coming into their own as musical instruments in their own right, as we've heard with the Edgar Winter Group. During much of Van Halen's earliest gigs, Eddie couldn't even afford the foot pedals so he figured out how to make that kind of sound by just *play the guitar* itself; even during this concert & his solo, he wasn't even using foot pedals because *he never needed them.* So, overall, in general, does Eddie make you a little more interested in listening to guitar solos than you have been up until now? Even just a little? Jimi Hendrix has done a lot with his guitar too, & others who "did their own thing" instead of trying to copy others. 🤗

Awesome, Outrageous Confessional David...to ffwd EVH all them times!!! :-)) Yeah, EVH didn't just play the guitar his own way...he CHANGED the electric guitar and amps to meet his expectation of what he wanted them to do (hence his 'Frankenstrat' guitar creation and also patents to his name). The tricky bit, volume knob/delay, is 'Cathedral' and amazing he plays this stuff while drunk as a skunk (allegedly). Then intro to 'Mean Street' (gotta recommend that album 'Fair Warning'...some piece of work!!). Two outrageous facts; 1) I heard Eddie had said it was the years of holding metal picks in his mouth that caused the cancer...despite the chain-smoking...go figure!! 2) Despite being proclaimed 'best guitarist in the world' 7 years in a row, being widely influential and many might regard him as their GOAT of electric guitar...he more recently still seemed to regard himself as primarily a 'pianist' (he and Alex where taught classical piano as kids in Holland). It always seemed obvious that his 'tapping' and classical style arpeggios, rife amongst his superb riffs and solos, were due to him attacking the guitar like a pianist. I think being trained in classical piano gives the advantage to play anything like EVH...for example Kanami from BAND-MAID also learned classical piano first (as did MISA and Akane) and she's pretty good at the old tappies...and a prolific riff-machine (a good example is 'Onset'...David already reacted). GREAT message man: "Kick The [shit] Sticks"...the past is the past and what seemed cool then (drink/drugs/booze) shouldn't be copied...RIP; EVH, Lemmy etc... I love this interview with Eddie where he talks about rock n roll 're-invention'... kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OVZ3dul6eNeJo Peace mate!!

It's funny that you would FF past this; I would FF past the Bass solo. Yes, I've seen it a few times, and it WAS entertaining but I didn't care for it musically. Of course, my favorite solo was Alex's. Specifically the overtone he would get at the end while playing the triple-stroke roll across the two perfectly tuned, electronic, floor toms. 🔥🤘🏽🔥 I wore out two VHS copies of this concert and now have it on DVD. 🤪😁

I never heard one guitar player, not Satriani or Vai live, come close to getting Eddie's sound and tone......until the Taylor Hawkins tribute gigs.....Wolfgang, his son, came out.....and if you close your eyes its Eddie playing those songs. It is almost spooky....but so fitting. His debut album is killer too. Sounds nothing like his Dad.

Every time I watch this, I think “Wow…this guy is an artist with his instrument.” My next thought is, “Oh shit…he’s gone.” Time is so unkind. To see him clown with the cigarette, you feel like yelling STOP, knowing what they did to him.

Lol! I use to have this on tape too. I actually thought you were Sammy Hager 🤔 going back stage and getting blown by groupies whilst Eddie did his solo and this is why you had to hear his solo for the first time... I can understand. ( this is somewhat true by the way)...😆

I know a gal who did exactly that when they came to Billings, Mt. Stinkiest, sweatiest bj she ever gave according to her. Did it during the drum solo to get a backstage pass for after the show.

Yeah, that's why Duff McKagan wrote the song It's So Easy... for the fact that he couldn't get no chick's slumming it but as soon as he got famous doing big shows they were everywhere...🤣🤣

i saw KISS on the creatures of the night tour with vinnie vincent... he comes out for his solo and plays eruption.. at the time i thought "what a hack"... can't even come up with an interesting solo of his own so he just rips eddie's solo. but then i realize that it can be difficult to create a 10 to 14 minute solo that is interesting and not just wanking. which gives me all that much more appreciation for what eddie created. vinnie was a good shredder...but... if that's all ya got..well it ain't good enough... gotta be musical as well.. gotta play something with feeling and emotion that can send the listener on a journey... which is exactly what eddie could do... his solos will always be a 10 for me cause they sound like songs but display such unreal technique... the benchmark for any good live solo...

One of the main reasons Vinnie Vincent was fired from KISS is because of his solos. He was given 5 minutes initially, and then he stretched it out to 6 minutes, then 7, then 8. Eventually he started going on for over 10 minutes. At one show he kept going after Gene and Paul both kept giving him the signal to wrap it up for over 2 minutes. Paul finally went out on stage, grabbed the mic, and said "Vinnie Vincent on lead guitar"...at which point Vinnie looked all confused and then pissed. He walked off stage, got in Gene's face, and screamed at him "Don't you EVER interrupt my solo spot like that ever again!!!" It was at that point both Gene and Paul knew it was time to part ways with Vinnie Vincent.

Bet you're kinda bummed you didn't watch that until now huh? Got to be the World's GREATEST friggin' SOLO EVER!!! Although there are a couple that could give him a run for his, 💵💲💰Like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and maybe another one or two. But EVH WAS definitely in a class ALL HIS OWN! RIP Eddie!
