I was working at the Arizona Biltmore hotel in 1987 as a valet parker. We had lots of. bands that stayed at the hotel (GnR, Heart, etc). U2 stayed there for the concerts that Eddie is talking about in this video. I saw them come and go in and out of the hotel over the 4 or 5 days they stayed several times. One time, a limo pulled up and the Edge got out and handed me a guitar case and asked me to take it to his room. Gave me a $5 tip. I said that I would get it to his room. When they left, another worker said he had a camera in his car and we took photos of us with the Edge's famous Gibson Explorer. I still have the picture. U2's manager went around to hotel workers and asked if we wanted free tickets to the show. I got 6 tickets to each show at Sun Devil stadium. True story.

We brought a giant banner that we'd made to the Biltmore hoping they'd sign it. Security kept us on the other side of the driveway island. Bono actually came out and autographed it, much to the chagrin of security. One of my best memories ever. Both were so nice!

One of the greatest albums and tours of all time. It is hard to conceptualize nowadays just how big the Joshua Tree Tour was. No online tickets. No social media. Just hundreds of thousands of kids waiting in line.

Somewhere in my digital files I have a scan of my ticket stub to U2’s Joshua Tree tour concert in Las Cruces, NM in 1987. The price was around $17.00. We were less than a basketball court’s length away from the stage. Still the best damned concert I ever went to. I paid $250.00 for one ticket to their Joshua Tree Anniversity Tour in 2017. We were more than a football field’s length away from the stage.

Spot on. I will add one thing to what you said. It will make me sound old. But I don’t care.. No fkn cell phones. Just the pure spiritual experience of one of the greatest albums ever written being performed by the band at its peak in a crowd of 50,000 people. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

It's amazing to think that Bono is only 4 years older than Eddie. He was tending gas pumps when U2 was hitting the top of the mountain. 2 very different journeys to get to where they are today. I love em both.

Also for the younguns...I'm 58 by the way. Eddie Vedder has sold out and sold his soul just like U2 to the Leftist Marxist establishment, the World Economic Forum and Globalists all over God's Green Earth. None of these artists are actually for the people even though the proclaim they are. They wouldn't know real democracy if it bit them on the ass. They think socialism is some kind of joyride for the little guy. Enjoy the music, but do not worship these people and do not listen to their opinions on climate change, vaccines, digital passports or anything else. They are in bed with some of the biggest scum on the planet all for the almighty dollar, some silly political awards and popularity. When you feel your freedom slipping away, fight like hell to keep it because you might not ever get it back.... WWG1WGA! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I always felt that for those of us who grew up with `Mount Rushmore` bands like the Stones, the Who, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc, U2 gave us a huge lift to the 80s that was desperately needed. Saw U2 play an unbelievable show in the old JFK stadium in Philly in 1987. Great story and great cover!
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 Жыл бұрын
I had never thought of it like that. But you’re absolutely right. U2 was kind of a bridge band from the era we grew up with those bands you mentioned, to get us to the next era of rock which took shape in the late 80s-early 90s. As an aside, I was at that show at JFK. I had already seen them a couple weeks before at the Spectrum. But it was so good I wanted to see them again. Even though JFK was such a dump, It was well worth it. It was a totally different animal to see it outdoors with 90,000 people as opposed 17,000 people at the Spectrum.

Imagine being the guy who sold those 8 U2 tickets to some random kid in 1987 and have no clue that kid would then go on to create one of the greatest rock bands in history and even play a significant part in inducting/honoring that very band (U2) at the Kennedy Center.. and most likely still have no clue it even happened.

100% with you on this - some high school mates played this song in front of a Catholic School audience. I thought the priests were going to pass out from the uncontrollable excitement from the student body back in 1987. U2 and the Police were the soundtrack of my youth and in the years since the music of Ed, Chris Cornell (RIP), PJ and Soundgarden have rounded things out. When Ed does stuff like this it just reinforces what an all-time special talent he is. Love it.

Iowa City Oct 20, 1987. A special night indeed. I slept in line all night long for 2 tickets on ‘The Hill’ in Cedar Falls Univ of N. Iowa. A night of fond memories with my friend Tony from Iowa State. Earlier that year in 1987 I was a senior in HS, in the hospital for a 3rd time, having lost a lot of my senior year to recovering from 3 spontaneous lung collapses. I listened to Joshua Tree on my walkman over and over while in that hospital bed. For us, we will always remember the anticipated last song of the concert, ‘40’, and the chant ‘how long must we sing this song’ at the very end as U2 did back in those days.

The Joshua Tree is my all time favorite album, and to know about Eddie's obsession within that U2's era gets me closer to him for sure. Unfortunately I was only 10 years old in 1987 and wasn't even concious about the overwhelming force of nature the band was. It came up to me a few years later, and so, I did never attend any of the U2's 80's gigs witch is such a pity! By the way, I got obsessed nearly at the same level with Pearl Jam when "Ten" was hitting all over, and been a huge fan ever since. In my opinion, U2 lost it all at the end of the 90's to never recover a thing; otherwise, Pearl Jam matured and they're not certainly the same band they were once, but still they are great live and keep their principles somehow. So listening to this story, about Eddie relating with The Joshua Tree Tour so hard, makes me so happy. I did already know that the tour began and ended in Tempe, AZ, cos I'm just as mad-obsessed with that very tour as I ever been! Since I bought the "Rock's Hottest Ticket" boot in '92 (recorded at Rosemont Horizon in Chicago '87) that included the whole tour in the credits booklet, I nearly memorized the dates of the damn tour! I would literally kill to be able to get to one of those shows (via time-machine or whatever)...

Cool to see two of my all times "together" in one place. I got to see them for the same tour at the Big O in Montreal with my hs sweetheart. Our seats were so bad we were able to be intimate without anyone really knowing. Very memorable show, can't imagine my 16yo daughter heading north to Canada without older super vision in 23.

I could listen to him tell stories all night at these shows. They are always amazing and then backs it with a great song. I was lucky to see Eddie solo and man was it a show, I plan to see more in the future, they are just awesome. Eddie in my view will go down as one of the greatest, keep on rocking in the free world Ed.

Completely agree. Especially about the “telling stories“ part. One of my favorite shows I’ve ever been to was James Taylor about 10 to 12 years ago on his One Man Band tour. Basically the show was what you just described Eddie is doing here. It was just him and his acoustic guitar. He had a slideshow. He told the stories about what the songs were based on. Stories about how he wrote them. Got super vulnerable with meanings of his songs. It was absolutely incredible. This video definitely has a feel like that show.

@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 I saw Chris Cornell at his show just like Eddie is doing . Chris was doing a solo story telling style tour, to say it was one of the greatest events I saw would be an understatement. So glad I went since Chris passed on some time after, I am happy to have been a part of his story just for a few hours anyway.

I was at one of those shows in San Diego in 87. Back then it was Jack Murphy stadium. Got two tickets and took a girl I had a huge crush on. We kissed in the middle of that show. It was such a magical night.

Cannot help but notice the shift in direction and quality of U2’s lyrics following All That You Can’t Leave Behind.
