Eddie Woo: "The Meaning and Meaningfulness of Mathematics" | 2024 Michael E. Moody Lecture Series

As part of the 2024 Michael E. Moody Lecture Series, award-winning Australian educator and “Wootube” host Eddie Woo presented "The Meaning and Meaningfulness of Mathematics" to the Harvey Mudd College community.
The mainstream view of mathematics in the world is that math is comprehensively described by numbers, calculations, equations and formulas. This narrow understanding is often what lies underneath many of the misconceptions about math as well as the widespread dislike of the subject. In this lecture, Woo explored ways to help broader society see mathematics as meaningful, by expanding the meaning of mathematics in their minds.
The Moody Lecture Series illuminates the joy, wonder and applicability of mathematics. The series was established by the HMC Mathematics Department in honor of Professor Michael Moody. Under his leadership, the department revised its curriculum, rejuvenated the senior-thesis program and tripled the number of math majors.
