I cracked this 2500lbs rock in half with only a hammer drill, hammer, and chisel, and a little help from a Kubota tractor

Thank you for posting your video. As I'm sure you've read a bunch before a good set of feather and wedges is always a plus in a workshop or farm. Old school but works without the huff and puff. A simple tap of the hammer on the wedges is all you'll need. Back and forth, back and forth, ting, ting, ting.... Then you'll hear it. Ting, ting, ting, tong. It's very rewarding. Best of luck to you!

Hi S Davis, yes, I just learned about feather and wedges 😂 I had no idea there was such thing until I posted this video. This was my new idea that I had that has been around since ancient Egyptian times 😂 I appreciate the feedback.

Nice job in Mexico since we didn’t have drills like that we used to add fired wood around rocks like that put the fire on for around 4hr the. Just through bucket of cold water till it cracked on its own

Wow, Bullrider562, that's pretty awesome, I think I like your idea better, I could also drink a beer while building the fire lol. Thanks for your comment, You should make a few videos on how different things are where you live, I would definitely enjoy watching them 😊

Nice work I live on top of a Mountain in NH which is comprised of all rock. I can't stick my 30" excavator bucket into the ground without hitting rock and it's hard rock not shale or slate. Majority of them are your size and bigger, much bigger. Try using some feather and wedges next time will split that rock much easier and you were half way there. Just needed the F&W's. Also Dexpan is a great product for breaking down large rocks.

Hi Michael, NH is my home and I have the same problem lol. I bought the backhoe because I couldn't get my shovel past the one inch mark. I now know about F/W but haven't used them, I just watch a lot of videos with examples 😂

Try a chisel to locally open the crack and insert a pry bar.

I have a larger rock than that monster. I need to get it out to make room for the driveway. My is approximately 6'diameter, which is about 17,000 lbs. I am so peeved. Probably will have to rent a machine with a hammer. I am going to try 30 feathers and wedges, but not sure if it will work on a weathered 6' diam. monster. Cheers from Canada.

Holy Crap Vierka, that is a monster! Keep me posted if you do attempt it, but how are your going to move it once you split it? I'm right on your boarder in NH 😊

Did you make a video of your efforts? Id love to see it. I had one that someone tossed into my way that was about 3x4 ft or so. I cracked it into little blocks that I may decide to use to build a small hovel with to get out of the sun. Its under Bauer Rotary hammer vs Chicago electric hammer drill where I compare the two. Yeah, i recommend a rotary hammer hands down.

get some feathers and wedges - far easier and split the stone into lumps you can use seems silly to do all this work just to waste or bury the lumps

Hi. Can you tell me which hammer drill and tip you used? I don't know if the rock you have there is as hard as the one I have or if the equipment I used is not strong enough, but the tip gets just moving around. I need something that does penetrate the rock as yours. The technique was used back in the day by Egyptians, but you did a nice job here. Thanks for sharing.
@EddieCarrara14 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergio, you're welcome 😊 It's a Milwaukee Hammer Drill and Bit. The bit held up pretty good for the first 30 holes but then burnt out. I couldn't believe I actually cracked it lol, I was very happy because now I could move the rock out of my front yard and on to my retaining wall. Hope this helps and good luck 👍

They make wedges it’s like a three piece wedge that slides down in there two pieces go in the second one and third one gets driven down and use several of them and Gretchen rock right down right down the crack if it’s got cracks in it or not that’s how you gonna break it but I’m sure with all your drilling you’ll get it but there’s easier ways

Yes sir Rob, or a tractor with a backhoe 🤣 It was about 85 deg that day in the direct sun, I was overheating, out of shape, and out of breath lol.
@UpcomingJedi2 жыл бұрын
Looks like you work too hard to do that. Pounding it is not necessary. You can use a tiny 8 oz hammer to do this. All you need is the right splitting tools and a little grease or bacon fat on them to make them slide easier and just tap it. The rock cracks a lot easier than using those prybars which dont taper all the way.
@EddieCarrara12 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Garras, I figured it out after a few viewers mentioned the feathers and wedge system lol. My rock splitting days will be much easier now 😂
