My 5 siblings and I were ALL made to join the band. I met my husband in college band. So, as one does (muahahaha!), I made MY kids join band. I'd badly wanted to play French horn, but due to physical impediments, it wasn't allowed, so when the band director decided that my daughter was best suited to French horn, she was (naturally) very much against the idea. With her (in later years, very expensive) French horn, she earned a full ride college scholarship.

Ten years old. Music lessons offered at my school. So, of course, I desperately wanted to play the violin (so romantic?? lol). My parents, both accomplished musicians themselves, said, "No, the violin is far too difficult. It's tenor sax or nothing." whut? nooo Well, that sax+case weighed more than I did. So, on "music days," my best friend and I used it as a "bench" while we waited for the school bus. Right up until I quit those lessons. Mmmhm...in the third torturous month. Ah, memories!

I remember buying this on VHS when it came out. The box had a lovely velvety bit on the cover for where her jacket was. It felt really cool and groovy buying stand up by someone that (at that time) still identified as male (lesbian) but wore clothes made for women. I'm not tv but I loved that fact that she brought all that front and centre. She was so androgynous which is so attractive in a person. It gave the confidence and dont give a fuckety fuck to wear nail polish in public. I still enjoy that it confuses people (I'm a he/him).
