I went through a shopping list before deciding to purchase a new SL55. I get the “why didn’t you buy a Porsche GT3” question a ton. TLDR, the GT3 is great, but almost impossible to get an allocation for and from a daily driving standpoint the MB is a much better car. Longer version: I have driven a 992 and they are very comparable frankly. If I could have gotten an allocation for a GT3 I would have had a, maybe, slightly harder decision. If I were tracking the car that would have made a bit of a difference. But my SL has AWD and the raw performance numbers are pretty close away from the track. My 55 is rated at 469HP while the GT is 505, but Mercedes has a habit of understating HP and based on my 0-60 times (Mercedes says 3.8 but I’ve gotten just under 3.6 on street tires) I’m guessing my car is about 500hp. The GT3 is a bit faster at 3.4 in the 0-60. Low end torque on the GT3 is a bit underwhelming under 400 ft/lb where the SL is closer to 500 feet/lb. So there is a bit of a need in the Porsche to push the car to get into the performance envelope, in the SL that extra torque and AWD really enhance the driving characteristics around town. Once you are well into the performance envelope on the GT3 it’s an absolute blast to drive and hands down obliterates my car. But, the GT3’s are a bit pricier and I was trying to stay under that 200K line and I’m not tracking the car. The GTS models are very nice and priced comparable to my SL. The turbo flat 6 is very responsive, and from a raw performance standpoint probably the best overall value in the 150K - 200K category, in a car you can actually get your hands on. While I wasn’t looking specifically for a convertible, when I drove the SL I was very happy to have it as an option and prefer it to the 911’s drop top. The C8 is frankly the best overall value for sheer performance, but I’m in that rare group that just doesn’t love them. At this level of a purchase there are a ton of great options, and the 911 line up is just amazing overall, as are the AMG SL and now GT variants. So at the end of the day why didn’t I choose a 911 is probably the best Q. I really like the styling of my car a bit more. I’m also in a city where there are tons of 911’s, and I like having something a bit different. I love the sound of the AMG when it’s getting pushed around. And I was (and continue to be) very impressed with the interior design and the MBUX interface. MB and AMG really nailed the steering wheel design and driver experience. And at this price point with really no bad options and very little actual differences between actual daily driving characteristics it does come down to how you feel when you see and are in the car. Since writing the bit above I’ve driven the Tail of the Dragon a couple of times, come to really be thankful I bought a rag top since I use it daily, and after a track day at Road Atlanta I’m fully pleased with my choice. I’m also fine with the 55 with the performance package versus getting a 63. I spent an afternoon driving an SL63 and GT63 at Road Atlanta and then hopped into my 55 and didn’t feel any different about my choice to buy the 55.

Both rotary dial screens are configurable. You can change the order of the right one. And you don't need to go into the infotainment screen to configure the left one. Just press the screen on the left dial to change the setting.

Eddie, it’s a cool car especially because you are reviewing it, however this is not worth $200k, this is a $115k car!!

There’s a bunch of cpo sl 63 for under 120k, definitely better purchase around that price, 200k is insane brand new

For 200k I'm still getting a nicely spec'd Huracan or 488 over anything new

To me the SL seemed to have lost a bit of its character wirh each generation after the 450SL of the 1970s. If I were to see this car on the street I would not guess it was a SL.

I mean I think some would because the sound alone. I would not, I believe this car is about 200k out the door and for that you can get a really good Porsche.
