You forget that the X parasites don't just possess hosts but also kill them before cloning them, meaning if they did a salvage job on it, it might have undergone some form of necrosis, hence the melting form from fusion

In regards to Nightmares lore, I remember someone said somewhere that Nightmare doesn't want to attack Samus. The Nightmare was made to deal with Metroids so the Galactic Federation wouldn't have to keep relying on Samus. (I find the design of Nightmare genius, mettle armor surrounding it to protect it from the Metroids teeth.) However, in the events of Other M, Nightmare was hacked and started attacking Samus. Its metallic body began moving on its own, but it didn't want to fight. )I like to think it even somewhat knew of Samus and didn't wish to fight her, but was forced to, but that's just my head cannon). After being destroyed and rebuilt at the BSL Research Station, it was kept there. No doubt to test it against the Metroids they were reproducing it there. However, when the X parasite was released, it began to fight back, but realized that none of its attacks were working against the X. This caused it to start trying to run away from the X as we see it do it in the background of Sector 6 (The ice sector). Eventually it gets caught by the X and is taken over, once again forced to fight Samus. I just hope the poor things death was swift ;-; This information mightve been taken from the wiki, but I'm not sure, so I'm not sure that this information is 100% accurate

Metroids aren’t that easy to guard against. They can pierce armor or just suck out life energy through it. Adding any biological component would make a weapon against them worse and more vulnerable by miles.

My take on the oozy nightmare-x is that it's sort of like the zombie researchers from the main deck. For whatever reason the x-recreation wasn't perfect and the result was a lot oozier than the original

Or Neo Ridley, who looks very zombie-like compared to normal Ridley. You could argue it's because that Ridley is based off a life-drained corpse, but since the X can compensate for parts it can't replicate (SA-X), I'd imagine Neo could repair his body.

So, a few ideas I have on nightmare: 1. His baby-like appearance is kind of in line with the theme of motherhood, that was so prevalent in Other M. He could have been something of a prototype, too. That he was still in literal early development--both as an organism, and as a weapon. 2. One other idea why he was so zombified in X-form, is possibly that the Parasite took control of the organic elements of it, but not all of the mechanical components of his suit. Kind of a parallel of Samus & SA-X, actually(in Fusion Samus is practically naked, fighting the parasite controlling her suit). That there were possibly some built-in life support systems, that it could not control directly (sort of like a failsafe, or killswitch), and while it was able to control the weapons system & grav generator, the organic host is practically dying. So, the parasite is essentially trying to control a tank, but the only interface it has for it, is decaying meat. 3. One that just struck me, less than an hour ago, about how Nightmare was originally meant to function, as a weapon. It's kind of built like an old fighter plane, with the guns located in the front edge of the "wings," and a central fuselage. With what seems to be a thruster system, Nightmare seems built for flight--in atmosphere, or in space. Another idea, is that nightmare (when on the ground) has high firepower, for a comparatively low profile. An idea for how that ties with his Gravity generator, is that he's to fly through space, and use the generator to pull in, and latch onto an enemy ship with his claws. As he pulls himself along the exterior, he still is able to attack potential defenders on board. I kind of want to see a Metroid game (or something metroid related), that has Nightmare functioning as its supposed to. Possibly on the same side as Samus.

Great video! But I personally never found Nightmare’s face in other M to resemble a baby. It felt and still feels more ambiguous and unidentifiable (And grotesque obviously). In my opinion the face and scream actually made Nightmare creepier!

I've always wondered, was it necessary that Nightmare was a half- organic, half-mechanic being? Did the creature inside controlled the "robotic suit" or the mechanical parts amplified the creature's abilities?

I'd say both are true. The Federation created a intelligent bio organic creature with the ability to control gravity at will to use as a weapon against the chozo and space pirates. Unfortunately, the process left the creature soft, unable to move and lacking control of its powers. Rather than terminating the project, they decided to enclose the creature into a mechanized suit that would solve the three major issues. With its cybernetic enhancements InFocus power, it would literally leave be the enemies worst Nightmare.

Loved the theory, but there seems to be SOME flaws with it. One of the biggest ones is that the X-Virus's don't take controle of the body, but they clone it. This means that the Nightmare you fight in Fusion isn't the same Nightmare, but a mere clone. But everything else you say I agree with. Metroid is about two power hungry races, the Humans and the Space Pirates, and how they destroy races that live only to seek enlightenment, such as the Chozo and Luminoth. I think that The Nightmare is a represntation of one who is caught in the jumbled mess of the universe, and has to suffer due to it. Because of the power seeking Federation and Space Pirates. His face just looks like the face of one who's misrable, one who can not escape the hatred of the world. Well, every story needs a hero. Samus HAS been fitting that criteria, right? I mean, we DO see Samus help the Luminoth with little hesitation, which is one of the biggest indicators that she has good intentions. The federation force didn't even tell her to, she just did it. I'm just excited to see what Prime 4 brings...

I'm pretty sure the galaxy federation and the space pirates are just names for the maim organizations of the lore,not trying to come off was "UUGH actUAly" but they already stablish the idea that are multiple species working together for similar interests but because there is corruption from both sides in the end of the day there ins't much diference between the pirates and the federation

I always thought that Nightmare was specifically designed as a last resort both-ways defense mechanism. He was guarding Sector Zero in OtherM and the fact they placed it on the BSL makes me think he was put there to guard the secret lab before he went berserk because of the Xs. This way he was an effective defence both from unauthorized intruders (like Samus when she tried entering Sector Zero) and eventually escaping Metroids (Nightmare looks like it could fight back against some Metroids).

That makes me wonder if Nightmare was native to Sector 5 or not. The sectors are connected via different secret passages, so perhaps the correlation you're making makes a lot of sense since it could travel between Sectors 5 and 6 to guard the area in Sector 6 where the Metroids were. Only question there is if it got infected before or after Samus unlocked the level 3 security hatches.

@@TheKZbinGame I'd say Nightmare was indeed native of Sector 6 and arrived on Sector 5 after the infection, otherwise why would he abandon its position to roam around Sector 5? Maybe the Xs got to know that there were Metroids on the station from Nightmare's memories/data, which may give them another valid reason to try to blow the station up right after we first see Nightmare. It's really interesting to think about.

Its worth noting that the first and second time we hear nightmare in Fusion, it could be him running away from the X. The devastation in Sector 5 upon the 3rd visit could be the X's doing after finally getting to him. Making Nightmare an even more tragic/pathetic creature. Not merciless or destructive by heart, but a scared child pushed to the brink.

A Boss battle idea I always wanted to be implemented in Smash bros is one with both NIghtmare(Matroid) & Nightmare (Kirby).Nightmare(Kirby) would fly around launching tornados and stars, while Nightmare(Metroid) would manipulate the Gravity, and fire lasers, and maybe even make black gravity vortexes. Both Characters have a sphere form, which could allow them to switch positions quickly.

man i remember back when i first played fusion as a little kid i got stuck on nightmare for weeks i just could not beat this hecker no matter what i did, that is until one day i just kept trying and trying to beat him for a hours until eventually i had done it i finally brute forced my way through this monster after god knows how long fricker still gives me bad vibes when i fight him but i can beat them now without too much issue and thats what really matters anyways cool vid or whatever :v

Its implied nightmare in fusion wasn't fully functional as parts of his arms are missing. It looks like when it was fighting its cybernetics are doing most of the work and the creature could only sit in pain. In fusion it appears damaged and not fully functioning indicating they didn't finish its repairs

Samus uses a laser only once in metroid prime hunters. Samus power beam shots are of an unkown kind, since they damage spirits, they are not composed of "natural energy". Plasma has indeed pretty low mass and it can reach really hot temperatures, wave beam and ice beam are just ?????? Quantum mechanics?

@@WaveOfDestiny I think Prime series wave beam is a Tesla Cannon. The ice beam is more like a shotgun that doesn't spread out much because of the projectiles' low temp. The power beam shots are the pinnacle of Chozo technology. Perhaps it was originally meant to fight off spirits.

That almost definitely happened, but it’s _not_ what we see happening in the game. The fact that it fell apart and revealed an X core tells us this isn’t the original nightmare- it’s an X clone. It wouldn’t make sense for an X clone to die of X infection.

I have two other theories regarding nightmare's deterioration in Fusion. One is that nightmare's X clone was an imperfect version, similar to how the scientists and SA-X appear to be incomplete almost gelatinous versions of the originals as the X appeared to have trouble replicating more intelligent life forms in the beginning. The implications of this are that Nightmare is actually more intelligent than it appears, which may explain why they would go through the trouble of using it as an organic component rather than making the whole weapon mechanical. They may have needed a real intelligence to control the gravity manipulation device rather than an artificial one. My other theory is that Nightmare itself is imperfect. Having a biomechanical weapon that can manipulate gravity itself seems too useful to just give up on unless there was a major flaw with the design. My belief is that, while an organic intelligence was needed to use the gravity manipulator, the effects of triggering such major shifts in gravity so quickly caused the creature immense suffering and put a massive strain on its body. Without the mask to seal it in, Nightmare's gravity manipulation would start to tear itself apart as the body would slowly be ripped out of its mechanical shell, inflicting even more agony than it was already enduring. After all, Nightmare seems to be a strange name for the weapon unless it was a dark reference by its creators to the creature's cruel existence.

I like Nightmare. He is unlike the Bosses for example Super Metroid not just an Alien or Space Pirate general, he is a poor abominated experiment. That makes him special. And his Gravity controlling capabilities make him even more special, there are no other bosses in Metroid Series who can do this (I guess). In japanese, instead of it being created for military purposes, it is said to have been created by the former galactic federation army. If one plays them in releaseorder, it is a neat callback as one understands where it came from. However, if one plays them in chronological order, then it's a massive red flag towards the corruption in the federation itself. If the military was restructured due to the scandal of illegally creating bioweapons, why would the Federation just rebuild one of this conspiracy's most powerful bioweapons? It just doesn't make sense.

I like to think that with accumulated knowledge the X gather through host that they might have might have made Nightmare's face the way it did as an intimidation tactic. Buut there's also the possibility that the X can't make a perfect copy out of deceased host they infect so it either comes with flaws like Nightmare or have to improvise with other DNA and explains the different look of Ridley X.

I think that the "face-melting" when Nightmare appears in Fusion could be due to one or more of the following reasons: 1. It's body is significantly aged and decayed either due to the events of Other M or needing to be repaired and revived. 2. It's organic body may have reacted poorly to it's containment.(It was likely frozen in Sector 5(ARC)) 3. The X parasite mimic of Nightmare that Samus fights may have been forced to inhabit the same cybernetic structure as the original Nightmare that hosted it. That would mean that a new body had to take the place of the old one in a cybernetic structure that was fitted specifically around the old body making it unstable and causing it to begin to fall apart after taking some damage. That could also explain Nightmare X's lack of mobility as it may not be properly connected to it's cybernetics, or may even be slowly falling apart even before fighting Samus. 4. The version of Nightmare that was infected is not the same creature from Other M, but rather a crude attempt by the federation to re-create it. Perhaps it underwent testing for it's viability as a bio weapon, but didn't perform to expectations, so the federation locked it up in Sector 5(ARC). On another note: I never thought of this myself, but I heard somewhere that when Nightmare's silhouette is seen in the background of Sector 5(ARC), it's supposedly still safely contained behind the glass in the background, and possibly not even infected by X yet. I don't know if this is actually what's meant to be implied, but it's interesting to think about.

Weird that I saw so many comments and teories about Fusion's Nightmare, but I haven't seen a single one that thought that maybe it got the Ridley treatment, if we go by that it is the same one from Other M, then it is 100% dead no questions asked, the same for Ridley, he was dead by the end of Other M, just his body remained, that's why we find him frozen at BSL, maybe the Feds thought they could still study/experiment on their bodies (which makes sense considering it's the same Feds that thought they could control the X and SA-X, and put the memories and personality of one of their recently deceased captains into an AI specifically designed for Samus 👀) Also, friendly reminder that X-parasites can still absorb organic matter/lifeforms even if it's not alive (the one drawback being that they don't get the knowledge the host once had), which kinda explains why Ridley-X mostly screamed at you rather than actually fight, same thing for Nightmare-X, it only used it's lasers+gravity weapon+'floating around the arena like a dumbass' because it was the only the X-parasite knew how to do (besides it probably would *not* be fun if that thing suddenly went full Speed-booster-Serries at the end of the fight in that tiny ass arena 👀)

This is one of many gripes I had with Other M: Why was Nightmare in it? (Real reason: he's an iconic enemy so we wanted to make players happy). But lorewise it retroactively made the plot to Fusion make zero sense. If we've seen Nightmare before then Adam shouldn't have been explaining him to us like we've never met

Ive been watching your videos for a couple years now. Metroid is my favourite Nintendo IP and you are my favourite Metroid KZbinr. You know your stuff. Metroid Fusion is the first Metroid I ever beat. I have also beat Nightmare in Metroid Fusion with no extra health and only 10 missiles. Let me tell you, that was one of the hardest things Ive ever done in a video game.

I always thought this was the case for Nightmare showing up in Other M and then in Fusion. It made sense to me. I think the main reason fans had such an issue with Nightmare in Other M was simply because he was in Other M. A game infamously hated by Metroid fans. If you can remove your bias from the game it’s easy to see why Nightmare was in it. Questioning Phantoon makes a LOT more sense because I have trouble making up good reasons for them to show up.

Phantoon is probably there for the same reason ever other Zebes enemy is there: Its blood got on Samus armor, and while cleaning her armor up after Super Metroid, the GF used all that DNA to create these bioweapons. Why Phantoon never showed up until post-game is the real question, because I'm pretty sure someone would've noticed that thing, which is HUGE now, floating around outside the Bottle Ship. The only other thing I can think of is that its the original Phantoon, who was supposed to be some sort of ghost, and thus never died.

Considering both the settings of the wrecked ship and the bottleship, Phantoons are beings that roam abandoned ships. The Super Metroid japanese manual claims the Phantoon from that game to be made from Mother Brain's contiousness(which we probably shouldn't take literally and moreso that it used her brainwaves to create a physical form and cross dimensions). Overall, it stands to reason why it's there during the weird after-segment. MB allowed it to manifest and then it waited until everyone left the place.

I think that nightmares corpse was kept in containment while they repaired cybernetics. Later an x parasite found it though and infected the corpse making x nightmare. The x can infect corpses which is now known because of Metroid dread

I remember his fight being a lot of fun in Other M. Didn't feel the same for the forced damage in his (albeit terrifying) fight in Fusion. The melting face could also be the X parasite's attempt to form whatever creature Nightmare was before the enhancements, resulting in it leaking out of the mask.

Forced Damage??? What? It's a bit tricky, yeah and you can pretty much tank him for the entire fight if you collect some of the energy tanks along the way but he is more of a lesson in mastering the space jump.

While it was a cool idea to see Nightmare in 3D in Other M, I feel that the execution was pretty lackluster. His design seemed much smaller and less intimidating and his baby-like screeching did not help. His exaggerated, erratic flailing also seemed out of character when compared to Fusion's giant, slow, and silent robotic melting corpse. The music in Fusion also went a long way in making his fight that much more unsettling while the track in Other M was just generic action music.

The other theory I’ve heard was that the baby crying was invocative of the baby Metroid and Samus’s guilt of exterminating it’s species. Maybe the Nightmare knows of his opponent’s guilts and extrapolates on it?

It's face looked like a baby instead of goo because Nintendo's choice of limited power graphics hardware. Plenty of the stuff you try to connect with lore, is just real world changes in technology, or patterns in game developement.
