Aloha everyone!
In this video we visit our friend Eddy’s Food Forest. Eddy has been working on his food forest for about 7 years and has done all the work by hand (no dozers or heavy machinery). The lava on Eddy’s land is so uneven he can't even use a wheel barrow to spread materials. Soil, cinder and other materials had to be moved using 5 gallon buckets. By not ripping the land he has preserved the natural beauty of the lava flow that is just 6 inches below the soil. Some of the features Eddy found are - a natural lava staircase, lava pond, beautiful big cracks in the lava, rope pahoehoe lava, and even some lava tree molds! Hope you enjoy!

I like this kane. He knew he was coming here to Hawaii so he was respectful and kept that in mind with how he was going to work with Pele. He definitely hana lima and cultivates with that ethic in mind.

Patience and observation, getting to know the land, is very key first step, as Eddy says. Spending time simply camping out and exploring. An important piece he does not mention, and most Permaculture folks seem to skip, is Be Open To Change. Your initial designs and builds may not work out. Be willing to change your plans as your experience, and needs change over time. The first 'house' you setup may not be where you really want it after 2 years of living with it and the land. All things change, including "permanent" agricultural features.

it seems to be a common trait when homesteading that everything is always in flux. I've started multiple buildings on land in New Mexico and realized, "Oh wait.. I don't want that there, that's right where the garden should be" or "my front door opens into a lake"

I've enjoyed watching your You Tube channel. I've bought a small lot in Black Sand Beach community. About 5 to 7 miles south of Pahoa off the 130hwy on Upper Puna Rd. It's virgin land like Eddie's here. Thanks for making this video. This is giving me some great ideals about what I maybe able to do with my lot. I also made the big mistake of buying sight unseen. I've always be good with working with what I've got to work with. This was uplifting for me see people doing the same thing that I'm planning to do when I get there. I'm planning on making a medicine farm and my own personal food garden. I saw that Eddie had a Tea Tree growing and I was wondering how do herbs do in a tropical forest. I grew up in a subtropical climate and could grow just about anything there. I've been living in Las Vegas for over 18 years and had to learn to garden over again because of how hot and dry it is here. Will it be the same for me when I move to even a very wet climate? Will I have to learn how to garden all over again?

Best to identify invasive plant species first. Remove them before needlessly getting rid of the native plants. Native plants grow way slower than the invasives. Uluhe is native fern. It's still important for the environment.

Michael Paulina Eddie hypothetical question is 50 Grand in pocket for the land what would be your area of choice, Hawaiian Paradise Park, orchidland, Hawaiian Acres, or UpCountry Mountain View Fern Acres , volcano? maybe difficult question but your two top choices would be________? guess we have to change or 3-month stay for a Year's stay for research Paul n Jill
@OffGridHawaii

@@OffGridHawaiiis right. The different subdivisions have different sized Lots. Spaghetti Lots. Lasagna Lots LOL. We just bought in Fern Acres, 2 acre lots, but all the roads are paved. And we got a nicely wooded property that butts up against state and federal Forest Reserve so we are happy. But like they say, they are all somewhat the same, except some get more rain than others. The closer to volcano you get the more rain you get.
@thomasreto2997
@thomasreto2997 5 жыл бұрын
Paul Torres Each subdivision has a different feel, different sized lots, etc. I guess there is always risk...but Look at the HOAs (financial stability)and see how each one is compared to the other..ask yourself what do I not want or do want...privacy...soil....rain...sun...public water...volcanoes zone vs cost of insurance...or off grid completely...Close to town or secluded....🌈😃🤙

It is really important to visit, to drive there after heavy rain so you know where you are ok vs where it always flood and you would be unable to drive out of your property. There are maps of flooding zone and lava zone to look. Also, see the neighborhood is really important. Your neighbors are going to have a big impact on your quality of life and feeling of safety, especially if they are closer like on the spaghetti lots. We were sooooo lucky with our land and neighbors, but it's also because we made a lot of research. I would say the 3 months you planned are enough if you know this is the kind of life that you want. Aloha !
@shaungur
@shaungur 5 жыл бұрын
@@guillaumebeaudet5334 I have been told that it's best to go in April when the most rain comes and stay for a couple weeks, this is after we bought our property, but we can't just throw a house anywhere, we have to put it where there is good drainage so this is an awesome post.

I saw an old video about not having P O Boxes and though I'd repost this here. Had the same problem getting a PO Box on St John in the US Virgin Islands. Got on the waiting list for over 5 years and still nothing. I went onto @t, went to the "get a PO box section, I put in the zip code of the post office i wanted a box in and there was some!!!! I paid for it with a credit card online and the PO tried to tell me there weren't any. I told them " I paid for one, how do I get a refund" and their lies that they didn't have any was exposed. I got my box. The agent told me not to tell others about this. The people in the local office might be holding them for their friends and familly. Don't let them get away with it. Get your boxes on line not in person.
