My wife and I bought land in Fern Acres to retire on and we will be making a food forest and greenhouse. Our goal is to produce at least 50% of our own food, and better yet 60% - 70%. Love your videos. Love the way you plant your trees. Elegant, simple and sustainable.

I really enjoyed this video. I think that I would go for a half and half thing. Half of my land ripped, and half natural like Eddie's. I am glad that I finally know what the brand name of the chicken manure pellets are. I have been wanting some for a while now. They are available to me on Amazon or from a company in CA. I will go with whoever is cheaper on shipping. It seems y'all are more busy and that is very good. Take care.

This is what my wife and I are thinking. Rip some specific areas, do the Eddie thing on other areas and leave large areas wild.

My property is loaded with giant downed albizia and have been clearing by hand and with a backhoe for 2 years. Luckily the albizia has provided tons of good lumber because I bought a saw mill and built a house with it and saved a lot of $ in lumber costs. An incredible by product of the milled albizia lumber is tons of albizia saw dust. I’m not even half way done clearing the giant albizia logs though☹️

i was considering buying land on the fresh lava flow down in kalapana...i had dreams of ripping it and covering it with about 3 ft of mulch and planting coconuts and ironwoods to chop and drop and provide wind protection. would be fun to try someday. big island is in a major flux with native trees because much of the native lowland forest is composed of essentially ohi'a with a dozen smaller plants and trees and a million types of small and teeny plants. with many ohi'as dying right now...without a massive and expensive reforestation project with natives...almost impossible to fathom...the main trees in lowland forests on big island will be albezia, cecropia, molokia, gunpowder, and ironwood. As with co-creating with the Aina, i recommend to include as much bio-diversity as possible and aim for food sovereignty, all the while preserving and encouraging the growth of natives. many of the canoe plants are not native but will work well along with native trees while growing food...mai'a (banana), coconut, and Ulu (breadfruit) are some of the best food producing plants one can grow in hawaii.

Something else to consider...trees grow A LOT better in ripped land if your land is formed by a pahoe'hoe flow. If the land is already an A'a lava formation ripping would be more to clear and flatten.

Do a hula hoop video, because the one I saw was cool, especially the way you edited it. The best videos are with the two of you, and that is mainly why I like your channel. I only watch a couple channels, and it's because there are not enough real people doing videos. I think a tour of nearby properties for sale would be good, no one else is really doing any, and I like Eddy, but I just don't imagine him as a regular and making it interesting. The video about the things you can't do in Hawaii was so funny, the skits you guys do are great. I like the tree stuff as well, but you can't bust up the team. Much love, and Shalom.

So has any one used goats to clear some land first? I'm moving back to the land I grew up on and my plan is to hike the land and put in electric fence. I know putting in the line will be a lot of work but figured I'd let the goats clear my chosen area while I work on my place. I'm moving into a falling down cane house I grew up in. It is completely overgrown and I remember the topography more or less in the yard around the house. The house is a wreck but I'm handy with a gun. A drill gun lol.

My boyfriend just cleared a lot with you on lehuanani street for a driveway, the drainage is horrible on that property...I have been doing permaculture for a long time on this island, professional for some time in my mid twenties, I would be very very curious to what you are suggesting to that couple who owns that lot as to what they/you are thinking about growing. I know this neighbourhood well and would love to chat with you about this.
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 5 жыл бұрын
The drainage is actually not so bad compared to the other lot that we scoped on the same street. There's a river to the right where most of the water drains. We plan on bringing in lots of black cinder to mix with the existing soil and also raise things up. They're planning to grow pineapple, lilikoi and garcinia... Among other things. It will definitely be a challenge but we are excited about the project 🤙🏽.

OffGridHawaii Then buy property where those can be done. Or better yet, if destroying what is innately Hawaiian so you can live in Hawaii then please just don’t come here. Humanity’s convenience- not needs-taking priority over our planet’s is exactly why our world is in this precarious position. Plus it’s just sheer arrogance and assholery to say “Hey I’m going to choose to come to your house/home/lands because it’s so beautiful but I won’t treat it with respect at all because that’s inconvenient for me.” That’s some colonialist bullshit right there. (Also it shouldn’t have to be said but that is the proverbial “you” not the two of you in particular.) I still can’t believe it is in any way legal, the environmental impact alone is staggering 🤦🏽‍♀️ Initially I thought ripping might mean deep soil tilling to level out a property but ripping up Pele’s lava? HEWA LOA.
@OffGridHawaii
@OffGridHawaii 5 жыл бұрын
Do you live on the Big Island? Ripping and clearing out lava is pretty common here, surprised you didnt know about that. Not saying it's the right or wrong thing to do... Most recently a large chunk of the lava flow was cleared off of red road to regain access to pohoiki. I guess there's a lot of factors to consider. But we agree with you that lava is nicer left untouched, as is the majority of the natural world. It's all about creating a balance between human existence vs nature. The big human dilemma. 🤷🤙

OffGridHawaii I’m from Oahu, but like most have family on other islands. I guess that’s why I was so shocked too because I’d never heard them mention it. I understand the necessity of clearing emergency passage, but yeah I’m definitely on the “vehemently disagree” side of this for sure. Considering what can be done with raised beds in this day and age, just seems like wanton destruction.
