The train leaving the station at 5:20 has flat spots "square wheels". The one arriving after it in the opposite direction does too, in the first car. They make a repetitive thrubbing sound that really gets oppressive if you're going fast. Flat spots are caused by locked-wheel skids, so any train that's been put in emergency braking mode is going to come out with a lot of square wheels. They probably have a wheel lathe at Jamaica Yard where cars can be backed in over a pit where it can be arranged to turn the wheels on the lathe and make them true - unless they're already too small in which case they must be replaced. It might be the R68 cars have never been overhauled and have brakes that no one's used to, because skids occur without going into emergency. That's why LIRR has their new laser zappers to remove the stuff from crushed leaves in the fall which is slippery and causes skids. Sometimes they overshoot the end of the platform as a result of such skids which must be embarrassing. Wheel maintenance is a big expense and square wheels destroy everything around including bridges, adjacent buildings, rail, ties, ballast and subgrade. This could all be more easily dealt with if some kind of linear induction became the general mode of propulsion, but preferably not with third rail like the AirTrain. There are a lot of credible patents for linear induction for use with conventional steel wheels and rails, which offers many advantages over maglev as far as maneuvering trains from track to track with the compact and elegant means in full existence since the early 20th Century. But the rail cabal doesn't want to bother with such things, and of course the MTA is totally in thrall of the rail cabal.

The whole R160 dilemma is the main example of why I hope the MTA does not just start getting scrap happy with the R68s because if Option 2 has arrived and had issues and the R160s problem had occurred they’re would’ve almost certainly been an cst storage

I hate to say this but, unless they have already fixed the issue, it would be best for them to shut down 63rd street entirely and inspect every inch of the line to make sure there is no other deficiency that wasnt noticed before and give ample time to repair. Yes, it will suck, but it would at least reduce or halt any further damage to R160s. I also wonder if the MTA could sue the contractors for the faulty work resulting in damages to their property.

As a suggestion, I really do hope that the MTA does NOT commit the same exact stupidity of taking away the M Train via Queens Blvd and truncate it again to/from 57th Street on the F Line. If the MTA decides to address the problem that caused the flat wheels on the R160’s, I say only close one section of the 63rd Street Line and keep the other direction open. It was very very unacceptable what the MTA did by taking that decision to begin with their nonsense in the moment when the students were preparing to return back to school for the 2023-2024 School Year. Everyone on Queens Blvd Local was treated like if it was a Sunday Schedule with the M Train being absent on Queens Blvd throughout the project.

It'll be more efficient to shut down the entire section and run the F via the 53rd Street tunnel than to close half of it at a time. In that event, the M can't run on QBL

Happy New Year 2025 to you all !!! Effective January 2, 2025 (the day after) the G line has been re-transferred from Jamaica Yard back to Coney Island Yard and is now using R68's & R68A's exclusively once again, with all R160's removed back to Jamaica Yard to fill-in for the 80 R160's (16 x 5 car units) out of service. Its 1966-67 all over again, and Jamaica Yard is jinxed with its second car maintenance crisis with their R1/9's being out of service in huge numbers back then. The E ran to Far Rockaway back then, F to Bway-Lafayette St only, the GG was a full time Brooklyn Queens Local lines back then were all badly affected, thus the brand new R38's were redirected from the D line at Concourse Yard to Jamaica Yard to help out the beleaguered Jamaica Yard crisis. The RR (todays R) was not affected at all, since it ran to Astoria instead of Forest Hills and was using fairly new R27/30's exclusively as well. The N was a weekday only line that visited the Queens Blvd IND line that ran from Coney Island to Forest Hills Mon-Fri from 6AM to 8PM only. Weekends it ran from 57 Street to Coney Island, and a shuttle only to 36 Street in Brooklyn daily from 12AM to 6AM, and was based out of Coney Island Yard as well. Also, 50 (10 x 5 car units) R179's have been transferred from 207 Street Yard's A line to Jamaica Yard to help solve a major car shortage problem at Jamaica Yard as well. Thats what happens when you have 1,290 cars at one facility, and maintenance usually starts to fall behind and deteriorates as well, and the restoration of the 38 Street Yard in Brooklyn should be restored to alleviate this problem from arising again in the future and relieve Jamaica Yard of some of their massive amount of R160 cars currently assigned there. It's a broken rail issue is allegedly from an area that the E/F/R use, but it's definitely not 63rd Street, as that was confirmed a rumor, meaning it's false.

I got the information from a tracking server. I'm not in the actual server itself, but some of the announcements from that server end up in another I'm in.

A lot of these discord servers publish bad or false information, especially the NYCT Information server. I got info from an actual conductor that operates on the Jamaica yard based lines. Also there are now a couple news articles on this

ATO Is the culprit. Hard acceleration and hard braking from 50 mph are causing the trains to slide n get spotted wheels.

@@fantherailsbcthat conductor doesn’t know what he/she is talking about. So again, you are allowed to speculate but we (MTA crews) aren’t allowed to disclose “sensitive information” to the public.
