I agree with you, that this (100 - Age) formula is just a thumb rule; if you don't really need too much money at a young age, just put the maximum in Equity (either in shares, if you understand the share market, or else, just put into Mutual funds). In fact, Index funds are the easiest (if you don’t mind the lower returns as compared to active funds). Actually, compounding does a much better job, in the long term. Having said that, we need to first have a sufficient Reserve for emergencies, besides having Insurance (take only Term insurance, NOT ULIPs or money-back stuff) and must have sufficient Mediclaim, to take care of difficult situations...
