In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, director Edgar Wright and the cast of Baby Driver showed off their film trivia skills. Jon Hamm, Eiza González, and Ansel Elgort combine strengths to take down Wright but prove to be no match for the director’s cinema knowledge. Wright even takes the opportunity to correct our own Alex McLevy on one of his questions. Clearly, we’re all out of our depths.

It is a pretty amazing commentary. It took me nearly 3 or 4 hours to finish it. I was pausing it, going on IMDB and Wikipedia. And spend nearly £40 on odd British films like Brannigan and Twisted Nerve. (Twisted Nerve having the same music motif as the nurse from Kill Bill... Fun piece of triv for you there...)

Jon Hamm is no dummy, but Edgar Wright is a damn genius. Like up there with Tarantino and Scorsese in terms of how much he loves and memorizes film.

I would say he is better than both of them. Tarantino pretty much only makes one kind of movie, with his only outliers Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Deathproof standing out as his worst movies. And Scorsese *seriously* only makes one kind of movie. They are both awesome at what they do and their dialogue is especially great, but Edgar is on another level. His attention to detail is immaculate and his scripts are far, FAR tighter than either Tarantino or Scorsese's. And of course Edgar Wright actually makes different types of movies. Even his Cornetto "Trilogy" plays with genre and shuffles the story more significantly than those of the other two directors. Again, I love Scorsese and Tarantino movies and quote them all the time. But Edgar is just plainly better at writing and directing.

@@trequor you make some interesting points which I may or may not entirely agree with (personally though I love some of Edgar Wright's films I feel that- Cornetto Trilogy aside- the vast majority are highly stylised and lack substance and as such I would put him behind both QT and Scorsese overall, even though I agree that in regards to attention to detail and tightness of script he is second to none), but I think the OP was referring exclusively to knowledge of cinema history, and in that regard I would say that no-one beats Tarantino. I honestly believe that he has seen and remembers every detail of every single film ever made in the history of cinema, whereas Wright and Scorsese have detailed knowledge of particular eras (Scorsese of the origins of cinema up to the 1960s, and Wright of cinema from the 1970s up to today, and especially 70s and 80s genre films). Oh and as an aside I completely disagree with your assessment of OUATIH as Tarantino's worst film. Personally it's my favourite of all his movies, though objectively I would rank it second behind Pulp Fiction.
