They definitely should have designed the case so it could fit that I/O board. Not sure why they didn't do that, am sure it wouldn't have been that hard & wouldn't have increased the size that much.

$269.90 for the basic and $369.90 for the Pro. I would expect a whole lot more for these prices. I find the dock almost laughable. When you consider what Radxa and Orange Pi have done for lower cost, Khadas just seems out of touch.
@TBMartin
@TBMartin Жыл бұрын
The Orange Pi may look more attractive on the outside but we are talking about a Chinese company, who only really make these things for the hell of it. Official support after a few months is non existent too so I wouldn't knock Khadas for their prices when they do support their own products for a long time.

@@TBMartin Khadas are also based in Shenzhen, China. Much development for all these kinds of boards comes from the community, rather than the companies themselves. I really don't see the value in such a thing and the fact that the specially designed case doesn't take into account the I/O board also shows lack of attention to something rather fundamental in design. OOWOW is the one thing that they do have going for them. Compare it to the Rock 5B and there is no real contest.

What isn't a Chinese company or manufactured part. I find it funny when people mention china yet china owns the whole market with practically all chipsets. Even the name brands are built from China. It's all about that market strategy aimed for certain customers.

Thank you for showing us the next tiny powerful chip and a cute case for it. I agree the 3588 chip is sweet for retro, and the enclosure works nicely with it. I don't mind magnets and pogo pins. Since the Pi shortage, I have taken to using old office machines instead, getting more power for little money. Not as cute, but way more expandable, and there's more room to decorate with paint and stickers. Can't beat the cost on a curbside find, and feels good to recycle old hardware. I would love to see the scalpers who sell Pis for 4x the cost get stuck holding inventory that nobody will buy. But I can support a company designing nice little things.

The price this is listed at, makes it not worthwhile as a every day PC. $360+ USD for 64GB EMMC and 16GB RAM? You can find something else much more capable unless your main concern is the form factor. Even then, a cheap android phone would probably out perform it at smaller form factor and cheaper price.

Can I recommend using a flydigi controller with the flydigi mapper? A lot of their controllers come with gyro, they have several options for less than $100 and let you map buttons to any app, regardless of if it's a game or not. I use mine as a mouse/gamepad when I have my phone docked and displaying on a TV or projector, it's pretty handy for more than just games and has plenty of buttons for different mapping options. Two questions: 1) Performance-wise, what's this board's equivalent in Snapdragon? Judging by how it's running "GT4" at Laguna Seca which is a track my 845 struggles with, I'm assuming it's stronger than that. 2) If it's not stronger than an SD845, what settings did you use to get it that nice? The "Get Ready to Drive" notification stays up after the race starts when you underclock and according to the stats it says it's running Vulcan, but that's about all I can tell. I've tried both to meh results on the SD845.
@pingtime
@pingtime Жыл бұрын
Nah man it's worst, especially in GPU side, If you just want to emulate console games/do basic task, you better buy used Samsung S10 with busted screen and hook it up to a monitor using USB-C dock (SD855 has better thermal). about why your SD845 equpped device slower than SBC above, well, the first suspect is thermal throttling, second is poor software/kernel implementation by the manufacturer. As you can see, despite using newer 8nm process node, RK3588 need huge heatsink/active cooling to maintan it's performance, and I'm pretty sure your snapdragon 845 phone/tablet only using (at it's best depends on MFG) cooper heatpipe buried inside the phone chasis without an good airflow, and will affect performance under sustained load like long gaming session. The software issue is pretty simple, I have several SD845 phone, Including OP6, Sharp Aquos R2, Poco F1, Samsung S9+ (US model) and arguably "worst performance" international model using Exynos 9810. And yes, some manufacturer like Sharp and Samsung is more conservative about the system scheduler inside the kernel, resulting worst overall performance agains Oneplus 6 and Xiaomi Poco F1. But the magic start when you put custom rom and tweaking some of the settings, my Exynos 9810 equipped model brutally outperform all SD845 on long gaming session thx to better software and thermal handling. The easiest method I reccomend is putting peltier-based phone cooler (which only cost around $10).

One quick question. Can you run unit over the single USB-C on the dock? I have several people with disabilities who would be hard pressed to put a USB-C plug into the port but would really love single cable operation. I do their tech support and if they could swap units by simply removing one from the dock and putting a new one on that would be perfect.

I was always hoping for NVMe support on the 3588S but I realised that was a reduced feature to reduce cost. I saw another youtuber showing that even if it had an NVMe connector, it runs at times even slower than a SATA SSD.
@pingtime
@pingtime Жыл бұрын
RK3588S only have 2 maximum PCIe 2.1 lane (operating at 5Gbps / 540MBps each) and cant be bifurcate together to be x2 lane and it's using PHY lane which shared USB 3.0/SATA3 (atleast in the block diagram). meanwhile RK3588 have dedicated 4 lanes PCIe 3.0 (8GBps / 985MBps each) which can be splitted to individual lane or dedicated solely to NVMe drive, which conform full PCIe 3.0 NVMe speed.
@pingtime
@pingtime Жыл бұрын
forgot also mentioning by using shared PHY lane for high IO (like NVMe drive), most of the time RK3588S can't even conform to PCIe 2.1 540MBps x1 bandwidth, especially when you have busy USB drive plugged in to the USB 3.0 Port. From data I collected, my Samsung PM981 NVMe drive achieve 360MBps read and 300MBps write (sequintal) on PCIe 2.1 x1 lane vs 3.3GBps read and 2.9GBps write (sequintal) on dedicaded PCIe 3.0 x4 lane. Shockingly when I put NVMe SSD on USB 3.0 adapter, speed almost reach the PCIe 2.1 x1 bandwidth despite the USB translation overlay. (I'm using rockchip RK3588 dev board and debian buster stable running on eMMC 5.1 module).
