Order vs Disorder, Jordan Peterson's Yin Yang analogy, & Stephen Wolfram's 4 classes of cellular automata are explored. The edge of chaos is the phase transition zone between order and disorder which is found across a broad range of complex systems. We discuss Norman Packard, Christopher Langton, John Beggs, Stuart Kauffman, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and M. Mitchell Waldrop. Wolfram's Rule 110 and John Conway's Game of Life, both Turing complete, make appearances.

@@Carlos.Explains I don’t know why you aren’t hitting your stride with the algorithm yet but if you keep it up, it’s gotta tip at some point. It’s weird how many views you’ve had on some of your videos without getting a that bump. I hope all is well with you. Btw, love the Oroboros on your logo. Have you ever engaged with Dr Ian Mcgilchrist’s material about the split brain? His book The Master and His Emissary hits on the physiological basis for the Lingham/yoni lecture that Jordan gave. For the short version (even if you’ve already read his book) search “RSA Animate the divided brain”. I’d love to hear your take on it.

@@Tstorm731 Thanks a lot! Hoping over time I can figure this algorithm out. Not in a rush. :) Thanks for the recommendation. Just watched that video (linked below for folks). Incredible production, and I thought my stuff was dense! Will take a couple viewings for it all to soak in. It certainly rings true and seems related to the edge of chaos as well. As Mcgilchrist points out, it feels like there is in imbalance in the modern world. We need to balance the rational with the intuitive. Just added The Master and His Emissary to my reading list. Thanks again! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnfWaoqFZ6drq6s

This was exactly what I was looking for without knowing exactly what question to ask. Wonderful video. You should look up viral evolution. Viruses are pushed to the edge of chaos because the more mutations they can make, the faster they adapt to immunity. But just a little more, and they fall off the adaptive cliff into an error catastrophy. One strategy for anti viral drugs is to increase mutation rate to push them off this cliff.

I can't tell you how much I appreciated this video! Over the past several years I've investigated and dabbled with various simulations, and I've been trying to put my finger on many of the concepts and quirks I observed. Though I've run across a fair amount of the information in the video before, I definitely hadn't seen it all, and I also hadn't seen things tied together so expertly. This was an amazing, and inspirational, watch, and thanks again for making it!

@PunmasterSTP

@@Carlos.Explains I'm glad to hear you are familiar with it! I got interested in Lenia primarily because I'm interested to see just how much complexity can arise from relatively simple systems. After coming across reaction-diffusion systems years ago and trying to code stuff up, I've seen some neat things but ultimately not that much complexity. Then I came across Lenia, and I was blown away by the "creatures" that managed to emerge. I'm wondering if using that kind of approach, with cellular automata and kernels instead of reactions and diffusion, would be more fruitful to get things to evolve. When I get some time I might try to tinker with Lenia and put the other stuff I had with Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion on the back burner...

The thesis you cited applies perfectly to consciousness. I.e., that self-conscious systems, in order to develop most effectively, should be in a permanent state of doubt, because then they enter a perfect state of creation. In practice, this would mean that a scientist maximizes his cognitive effort when he is constantly changing his perspective on the problem he is working on. Consciousness as a complex self-regulating system that utilizes feedback loops would solve any complex scientific issue in the blink of an eye, with the help of constantly balancing chaos and order, wouldn't it?

@@Carlos.Explains Appreciate the reply. My suggestion would be to caveat referencing him with a mention of why you think his contribution is valid - given that the main reason he's so polarising is because he loves weighing in on fields that he's not an expert in. Coming back to the video, he's clearly talking about psychology, his field. (granted I'm not an expert in complexity or in psychology, but) I'm not entirely sure, though, that translating so immediately between the quantitative sciences and psychology is appropriate without a bit more exploration. Either way, thanks for the video. Good to see complexity/systems dynamics being presented :)
