Im not a fan of sanity meters, personally. Most of the time, they're incredibly unrealistic. If you see something horrific, you won't instantly become a psychopath or schizophrenic. You may become a bit paranoid and horrified but not completely delusional.

After some googling I have learned that these witch balls are sweet gum seed pods and Andy is right, those monkey ball are seed pods from a Maclura trees, they're very similar to what Nikkie was describing and to the sweet gum pods.
