How much are the test media . I could see myself going through a couple hundred a year. Also this was a fantastic video. I am a serious shopper. I want a sharpener and a tester. And I think I want a bevel gauge

The paper cutting test is the way I determining everall edge sharpness. I have the PT50C, and it gets me in the ball-park, so after careful scrutiny with a 15x loupe and a digital microscope it tells me if my burr is gone or stills needs some work. Either with a razor strop or more finesing on my finest stone. (I use the Scary Sharp NZ system).

Hi, After sharping my knife with regular knife sharpner (course fine ) , and afterwhise a bit stone, i get different measures. As: Before 440 , After 225, After 200, Then After 350, Then After 50, so i mean no consistency. Any ideas why ?
@edgeonup44263 жыл бұрын
You got a reading of 50? That is unusual in consideration of your other readings. That low reading (amongst the other relatively high readings) might be indicative of a wire or "false edge". Assuming that your measuring procedure is correct - the instrument is simply reporting back to you it's findings. Usually, the cause of uneven readings of the magnitude reported, is residual burr. Don't know what your regular knife sharpener might be but its doubtful that it or a stone is an effective burr removal tool. When you grind an edge and raise a burr, you're only halfway towards completing the sharpening process. Now you must remove the burr that you have raised and it must be removed correctly. Hope this helps!

My question is with a toothy edge are you going to get an accurate reading The more you polish your blade the easier it will go through the media which doesn’t mean that it sharper It means that it’s more polished.
@edgeonup92366 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick. Toothy doesn't necessarily equate to dull and polished doesn't necessarily equate to sharp. It is quite possible to produce a polished edge apex that has a radius of 200nm and a toothy edge apex that averages 100nm. Toothy edges will yield a greater variation in readings down the edge however because they are, inherently, less homogenous than a polished edge. To your point though, the sharpest edge achievable for any given steel and blade geometry is very likely to be a polished edge.
@rickhall53996 жыл бұрын
That debate is still up for grabs whether a toothy edge or a polished edge is better I think there’s a spot for both depends on what you’re cutting toothy is better for some polished is better for others the main thing is that they’re both sharp. I guess my question to you is will the polished edge read differently then the to the edge.
@MrMZaccone6 жыл бұрын
@@rickhall5399 No. It's actually NOT "up for grabs". Given a "toothy" vs. a polished edge of the same final angle and other dimensions, the polished edge wins every time. The problem is that the techniques usually used to produce a polished edge inherently change those dimensions. If this is adjusted for, the superiority of the polished edge becomes consistently evident.

"The more you polish your blade the easier it will go through the media which doesn’t mean that it sharper" ... Unfortunately for your argument, that's EXACTLY what it means.

your suppose to multiply what ever number you get on this machine by 1.2 i didn't see you factor this in,

You are correct Den L. In order to make test clip tests conform to the BESS scale standard users must add 20% to the display reading.
