@@GravityKnightFlying Yeah...so far I've survived 3 layoffs and I think another is coming. Businesses just aren't putting employees on planes. But when I was furloughed I found the flying cowboys here on you tube to entertain myself. You tube recently connected me with your channel. I like the places you video. Keep up the good work. Maybe one day I could buy a plane and fly out there. In the mean time, hopefully I get to keep machining jet engine parts.

Might be worth changing out the Servo. I'll cover some more of this sometime.. I bought a few spares, and changed mine just to try something after the footage in this video.. interesting results (made a slight difference). But, they can do some weird things... even if the gear teeth are intact. Not sure if the flight school can do this, but you can get them used cheap on ebay... they came on GSXR crotch rockets, 600's 750's and the 1000 all I believe. There was a Kawasaki that had it too.. used on the exhaust system. They are like $15-50 on ebay. EXACT same part, mine the bike units have a slightly different wheel that drives the cable on them, have to change it. easy to do. They are $500 new from rotax!

hi Ive only flown a 152, 150 and a 172 in my total 230 hours. i am soooooo close to buying a kit plane. would you describe flying your plane as a nimble machine kinda like a go cart?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a pretty good way to describe it Mark. The S6 I had before this with it's short speed wing was an extremely nimble, responsive, machine. This S7 isn't quite as nimble as that was, but when compared to the 150/170 sized planes, the 7 is more agile no questions asked. Especially compared to the 170/172. You can really get down and carve some canyons and such with a plane like this (of course, check for wires and obstructions first always!)
@jjohnston94
@jjohnston94 4 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking of building an S7 for a long time, and my home field is at about the same elevation as yours. So the important question for me is: Do you need the extra power for this altitude, or do you chase power for the fun of chasing power?

What kind of Intake temps are you seeing? Not a lot of room under your cowl. Edge should run a fuel injector in charge tube. It will really bring charge temps down.
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
it's shooting up pretty fast... being at almost 7000ft on the ground doesn't help... it hits 150deg f in about 40 seconds on a warm day like today (flew it today for the first time).... going to need an intercooler....
@dustindickerson
@dustindickerson 4 жыл бұрын
@@GravityKnightFlying Did moving your intake and filter to the inlet of your cowl help lower intake temps?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
@@dustindickerson I built that setup, but it had one on it that was similar when I got it (samller tube, smaller filter). So I don't have much to compare it with, but I do believe it would be a fair bit hotter if the filter was down on the turbo. The S7 cowl is tight.. even though the radiator is at the bottom and wouldn't be introducing hot air to the filter on the turbo, the cylinders would be. My old bird would run around 15-20 degrees hotter inside the cowl than outside temps iirc, and it was pretty open to airflow.

How did having no vent line from your header tank work out? I’ve heard that it’s normal for bubbles to come in from the return line - has that caused any issues for you?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 2 жыл бұрын
So I started out with just the two feed lines running to each wing tank, and it worked. But it was a real pain to get the tank to initially fill. Had to loosen a fitting and let the air out.. once it was filled, and primed, it would run without running out of fuel. But quickly after thinking this through, I decided I didn't want to be reliant on this. Not that it should ever run down that low (header is only 2 gal)... but if it happened, it would be a pain out on the "road" to have to re-prime the system etc. I figured some kind of vent tube would be a good idea...I beefed up the top corner of the header tank and drilled and tapped a 1/8 npt fitting with a smaller line that runs up to one of the rear tank feed lines (each tank has 2 lines, so 4 total feeds). It splices into that feed line up high inline with the tank. It's all up hill through this line, no low spots. As soon as I installed this line, it would fill the header tank immediately when filling from the wing tanks.. problem solved. I feel better with this setup as now it seems to purge air out instantly. And if the system is ever run down into the header, there are no issues filling it up. I wasn't sure if it would work with the vent tied back into one of the feeds.. but it has worked great for ~500hrs or whatever it's been. And the tanks seems to feed pretty evenly.. thx

Hello What and where is the header tank?
@lesb3481
@lesb3481 4 жыл бұрын
The header tank, is a small fuel tank that usually holds a gallon or two of fuel. The wing tanks feed into the header tank and then the header tank supplies the engine. The primary purpose for a header tank, is to keep from losing power if a wing tank pick up un-ports during high angles of attack and/or bank and introduces air into a fuel line. The header tank is usually(but not exclusively) located directly behind the aft cabin bulkhead inside the tail of the aircraft.

Great job! Had to be satisfying when she fired up. One thought. As I've mentioned in previous comments I'm installing an 912IS in my S7. The Rotax install manual makes a very big deal about having adequate venting for the header tank. Also, you might watch this video about installing at 912is in a Zenith. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqu3mpiMZaqpibs The Rotax guys make a very big deal about header tank venting. Both the manual and the video are worried that any air that gets introduced into the system and can't get out could cause fuel stoppage. They talk about "cavitation bubbles" possibly building up in the header tank. I'm not sure I can see how that could happen, but I've installed a dedicated AN-6 line for a vent. It goes from the top of the header tank to the top of one of the wing tanks and gives a path for the air to get out. Easy to install and crosses that particular worry off the list. Can't wait to see the beast fly! Great job
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I won't end up having to do something like that. I think the issue is the lines dipping down below the tank and then back up to it. My last bird I installed a header tank, and the lines just dropped down to it from the wings, never had an issue, didn't have to do anything to fill it etc. I'm kicking my self for not welding in a couple more ports so I could easily try somethings now! But it could be done of course... thanks for the info btw
@kcpumpguy
@kcpumpguy 4 жыл бұрын
@@GravityKnightFlying If you read the 912is install manual and watch that video, what they are worried about is cavitation bubbles. Cavitation is more likely at high elevation and hotter temperatures, so you might not think you have a problem until it crops up on a hot day and a takeoff at high elevation (something you like to do!). The 912is and the Leading Edges system use high capacity electric fuel pumps that supply way more gas than the engine could ever use. It's the relatively large amount of fuel that's making the loop from the header tank to the engine, then back to the header tank that apparently can create a large quantity of cavitation bubbles. So this is an issue that's directly related to electronic fuel injection, not so much with carbs. If your system won't purge the air out of the header tank, I think I'd be a bit worried about it. From what I'm reading electronic fuel injection can introduce bubbles and they need a way to get out. Anxiously awaiting your next video, you've rapidly become my favorite KZbin channel.

@@kcpumpguy thanks man!! interesting issues you bring up... I put about 8-9 hours on the setup (half on the ground, half in air), but ended up making a change (it had not had a problem... yet!!). I was also nervours about it not taking fuel, and also just the pain it is to re-bleed if ever ran low and introducing air again. I drilled and tapped and put a fitting in the corner of the tank, then tied that back into one of the 4 lines going to the wing tanks up high where the air should be able to escape back through that line and out the vent. It seems to be working well like this - flown it several times now and staying primed etc. I appreciate the input as I'd rather play it safe on a deal like this!
@kcpumpguy
@kcpumpguy 4 жыл бұрын
@@GravityKnightFlying Great! I know a lot about pumps and cavitation (see my callsign) and I'm not sure I really buy the cavitation bubble hypothesis. But there are so many places I've run into that make a big deal about venting the header tank that I think there must be something to it. That's why I've put in a dedicated vent line, and I'm glad you did too. It's one of those things that's easy to do and the results of not doing it could be serious. Happy to hear that you've flown it. Can't wait to see the video.
