With all the windy days you picked a good time to be grounded working on the plane. I know how great it feels to get "HIGH" after weeks of engine work!

Excellent, so happy to see you up in the air. Congrats on a great project. I've got a little 10" lathe and a Bridgeport. Fun seeing you make nice little custom parts for your plane.

@@GravityKnightFlying I'm not a "real machinist" either, just a hobby machinist. I've made a fair number of precision parts over the years. But on the RANS S7 project, it's been mostly, knobs, firewall penetrations, spacers, etc. I used the Bridgeport with DRO to cut out the panel which turned out great. Seems I'm always looking for some reason to break out the vintage iron for a part or to make something better than comes in the kit. I've made a fair number of 3D printed parts for the RANS project. That's fun too. The fun tool I bought for the RANS project is a 30" brake-roll-shear. Don't know how I'd have made all the brackets for the 912is install without it. Keep the videos coming. I know that must be a lot of work, but we appreciate it!

I love how excited you get about opening the window with your new handle at 18:30. It's hilarious! Do the shocks allow the plane to tilt much in a crosswind? As always, another great video.
@GravityKnightFlying

haha! thanks! was so happy it opened and didnt flutter or blow off.. finally able to use that window now with the gas struts! these shocks run on the stiffer side vs. say the tk1's that are pretty mushy (great shocks, I don't mean that to sound bad) ... there is some lean, but it's not excessive by any means.. you don't really notice it unless spinning it around quickly - then you get some lean.

@ GKF, with the machining and welding you do have a look at alloys 2014, 5052 or 6262 as opposed to the ubiquitous 6061 T6.

Love your videos! Just curious about the oil leak you mentioned...what did it end up being caused by?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
bad fitting on the oil system... ended up having to replace it.. prop was sucking the oil up and flinging it all over though so took a bit to figure it all out...

Thanks, I’ve been chasing one on my 914 and it’s the same thing with the prop making it hard to find.

Please put safety cables on if you keep the ACME Aero shocks on. I had their shocks on our Cub and both failed. Took the wings off and trailered the plane out. ACME didn't back up their shocks and lied about how strong they were. I feel safer with stock bungees.
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
which generation shocks did you have peter? how hard of a landing?
@peterbierle
@peterbierle 4 жыл бұрын
@@GravityKnightFlying I just hate to see off field landing on public sites with no safety cables and untested equipment. We had 1st gen shocks, rolled thru 13" deep low spot, no hard sides and had 31" Bushwheels on. ACME might have done improvements since but at the time they lied about testing and the travel the shocks had. But most important for me was they choose to not cover the repair airframe damages of $10K. I never asked them to do engine tear down for prop strike. No other part in landing gear was even close to bent or damaged except the ACME shocks. In the end we didn't go to court because you can spent $10K real fast and ACME dealer is an attorney. I like your video by the way.

Do you think a small shot of nitrous would be a neat add on to a n/a rotax?

Cool but just wondering do those shocks work in reverse like compression when rod pulled out instead of pushing in.

Great video man! What prop have you got on it? And what system for the prop?
@GravityKnightFlying
@GravityKnightFlying 4 жыл бұрын
It's a 75" Whirlwind STOL prop.. just ground adjustable. Set at 19.2 degrees with their tools for setting pitch (they recommend 17 for a 912 for example). It runs out of rpm pretty fast, have to watch it.. but I haven't added pitch because it's best not to lug the 9 series rotax engines.. They are good props, had the same one on my last bird.. real light, smooth etc. But I do really want to go a little larger and soak up some more power, a big 2 blade is what I want, maybe down the road... An airmaster controller to make it constant speed would be absolutely awesome too, but I don't care for any additional nose weight on the 7...

Why do you use psi for atmosphere and the inches for manifold, that just seems confusing. Why not just use bar or kpa, then there is no need to change between units of measurement.
