While so many KZbinrs are reiterating that it's impossible to make enough compost (bummer), you and your hens have created a veritable flood! That's SO encouraging. I remember watching you dig your little ditches and plant your little twigs, and feeling a little dubious and quite curious about where you were going with it. Holy smokes! you saw abundant possibility, and you took me (and all of us) quietly along for the ride. I see better now. I live in the desert, and my yard is sand. I did raised beds this year and got six chicks (my first). Currently, there are five remaining (we lost one the first 24hrs), having a chicken party in the garden, and I’m doing small compost piles, and just making layers on top of the ground, chips, compost, ash then peat. It taken all spring, but they’ve covered the garden, and the raised beds once. I am very pleased with life with chickens.

A small design suggestion for desert life. If possible, try sunken beds vs raised beds. It will help retain moisture. But that's a technique I've only read about, I don't live there, so... perhaps the salt goes in my eye. ;)
