After spending hours trying to get to the bottom of a very similar problem I'd like to share how I resolved water getting into my boot. If you take off the light cluster (only held by two screws) you will see that the lugs where the screws were screwed have a small rubber seal (washer) around them. My washers were so worn that water was seeping under the lug, onto plastic casing then onto boot carpet roughly located above wheel arch. Simple solve: replaced the 4 washers (both sides) for 80p and job done, no water in boot!! Added abit of silicone around washers too to create an extra barrier. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE!

Thankyou so much I have taken this car back to ford many times an told nothing wrong with it..only to find when raining it pools again with water,no good..but have done what you said an so far all dry an very good..We are living in Australia but still many thanks to you..no more smelly water smell...If you lived in Australia I would of bought you a carton of beer or whisky... For anyone else still having water leaking after trying this, check under the plastic roof runners, pull the end up and there will be a crack under it, i sealed the mine with silicone then stuck the plastic back down with more silicone, did this 2 years ago and haven’t hand any water since 👍

another weak point are the mounting clips of the taillights and where they are screwed tight there are seals on the plastic spreading nuts embedded in the body. The seals on this Clips like to leak and thus also water runs in so it was with me

Hi Edmond. Thanks for that. 14k+ views makes me think there should be a ford recall. There is another way that water gets in to the boot too. At the bottom of the rear windscreen glass there is a gap which collects water all along the length of the screen. ( have a look after it's been raining before you open the boot). This collects in the curve of the screen and is held there because it's an up facing curve.....until you open the boot then the curve is facing down and all the rainwater drips straight in to the boot! Ford should be ashamed of themselves for such basic poor design.

What worked for me - before you cover your car in silicone and basically make a mess of it do this first, this video and others DID NOT WORK FOR ME - answer is in the ROOF PLASTIC STRIPS or was for me at least , my leak was in right hand side of bootwell so i removed right hand strip, careful not to break it but it should remove with some pressure - now re silicone the whole gutter/space where strip has been removed ( you may notice tiny cracks damp in space )- leave it 10 mins then replace strip. This is a confirmed fix - my boot hasnt been wet since. Your welcome.

I also have water leak but it was coming in from wire at top of boot, running down inside of back seats threw to front drivers side was wet, for any1 with same problems easy fix, also the top of boot welds crack and cause same issues happy motoring stay safe

To me the problem was the car roof under plastic tape on the sides, where the ceiling is combined with the side. Was split mastic from combining the two parties. I opened the old putty and applied a special silicone resistant to low and high temperatures.

I've a water leak on my Ford Focus Estate MK1 2002. There was loads of water in the spare space-saver wheel well, and had soaked the (removable) felt upholstery badly as well. I wonder if it's the same cause.

Maybe it's just me but I'm still a little confused. My focus leaks exactly the same and I was curious to see your fix. What confuses me is that if everything has been sealed to the right of the rubber seal, how is that water getting into your boot?? I've found leaves and dead insects inside the recess between the lights and rubber seal so it's designed to take water, the problem is is how is it permeating into our boot? I can't see how sealing around the hinge stops the water getting into our interior?

So you placed the silicon above the hinge. Wouldn't it come off when you close the boot because that hinge moves

Well, my solution is: on my 2009 Focus Wagon on the roof (under the black long plastic roof trim) there are two holes, and in these two holes are two plastic screws (I didn't find a reason why are there, LOL). Remove these screws (first you must remove the inside roof carpet), and fill these holes with some better stuff (for example) Sikaflex-11 FC.

With the tailgate UP the water will get in easily...because the hinge acts as a channel.

Ok thanks for you comment Edmond ive sealed my boot in the same place as you have and it seems to be working still get a little leak but not as bad as before.. I have a question how did you seal yours so perfectly I have difficulty getting behind the boot hinge did u take your boot off to do this or just a steady hand... Thank you mate...

I have this problem in my ford focus mk2 too. And I used black silicone like you but this is not the problem. The problem is of Ford Company.
