I am planning a trip to Scotland next May. Did you have any trouble with midges?

It varies by location and weather, I certainly saw them in the highlands and on some walks when there wasn't much wind you could see them around the dog and my face, but I didn't get a single bite. I had a midge net and smidge but didn't have to use either.

The Royal mile is pedestrian only with exceptions for some taxi and tour services so, yes, many walkers. And the city is quite walkable with excellent public transportation.
