So refreshing to see a travel vlog that isn't instantly all about Harry Potter when going to Edinburgh, the fact you started with Trainspotting was amazing. I hope you had a chance to visit Glasgow? As beautiful as Edinburgh is and I will admit its prettier than Glasgow, it just doesn't have the same vibe, nightlife, edginess as Glasgow does.

That was very enjoyable, thank you. I love the city but no longer live there, though do try to visit every year. Edinburgh has so much more than what you experienced, which is mainly the Old Town. The New Town is blocks of wonderful Georgian architecture and cobblestone streets leading down a long hill to the fabulous village of Stockbridge, though to get there first make your way to Moray Place and walk through to Ainslie Place and Randolph Crescent - the longest example of connected Georgian architecture in the world. From there turn right, walk a minute and you are on the Dean Bridge. Observe views from both sides before going down Bell's Brae, adjacent to the house at the near end of the bridge and going down into Dean Village. At the bottom of that hill, continue straight ahead between the buildings - do not go right and cross the bridge. The coolest view is had when going straight, which I only realised this year! Follow the walkway then cross the Water of Leith on the wee metal footbridge that takes you around the large red sandstone edifice that is Well Court, a former residence for working people. Then complete the circle by crossing over the stone bridge before turning left and walking under the Dean Bridge. Follow along about 10 minutes, go up the steps and keep left on the wee stone bridge before turning right on the street and carrying on following the water. This gets your to Stockbridge which is mainly to the left, though also interesting on the right with St. Stephen Street and Circus Lane (go up the lane and come back down the street)...lots of wee shops, eats etc. The building at the bridge with the clock tower offers fine pizza, with riverside alfresco dining, the the lower level Bailee pub at the near end of St. Stephen Street is a historical hang. Then follow the path alongside the pizza place and come up to road level a few minutes later on Glenogle Road. In addition to the large Glenogle Baths (with chimney) there is a series of short dead-end streets (the stop at the Water of Leith) lined with quaint two-floor buildings. Folk living downstairs enter from one side. Upstairs residents enter from the other. They both have gardens and need never see their neighbour. At the end of Glenogle Road, if you are up to it, turn left and walk a few minutes to the Royal Botanical Gardens. If you've run out of steam, turn right instead of left and walk back up the hill into the city centre. Go straight ahead or veer to the right up Brandon Terrance which leads to Dundas Street. This is a bit of a walk for some folk, but you can also cut it short by turning right at Stockbridge and heading up the hill. This is my fave place to take friends who visit the city - they absolutely love it. And hopefully you will too. I suggest you do a Google map tour to assess the suitability. I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

When you were at Greyfriars Kirkyard, did you look at the Mortsafes over some of the graves. These are cages over a grave to stop the grave robbers digging up the recently buried. Most famous of the 19th century grave robbers in Edinburgh were Burke and Hare.
@davidjones332
@davidjones332 2 жыл бұрын
Except that they didn't actually rob graves. They cut out the middleman by just getting their victims drunk, smothering them and flogging the bodies to the medical schools -it cut out all that tedious spadework! Burke was sentenced to be hanged and then publicly dissected, and he's still helping medical science because they kept his skeleton afterwards -lovely!

There's so many places in the UK worth visiting but perhaps not enough hours in your holiday. Some of my favourite places in England are Chester, Windsor and Chichester. Beautiful market town's with amazing cathedrals. Surrey is good for theme parks and parakeets. If you jump to Northern Ireland you'd need to visit the giant's causeway and Belfast. In Scotland there's the three cities Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen but you've also the rural and coastal towns and villages. Depending on which way you go will depend on what you'll see. Typically farming or fishing but most certainly industry. Some nice coastal towns in Scotland with history just like every place that exists really. Edinburgh's a great gem of Scotlands it's sad about what happened to grey friars Bobby a lovely warm but very sad film. Long after bobby's owner died he would not leave his owners graveside. Have a nice rest of your holiday and thanks for the videos. Your a lovely couple with great energy.

Loved this vlog...and Edinburgh is just an amazing city. So many beautiful places in the UK, I'm lucky to live here, but also thankful I'm finally flying back to Florida next weekend! For some theme park fun. Like you guys, I just love different cultures and mooching around your supermarkets and trying different foods etc . Thanks for sharing your adventures, your such a lovely couple x

Looks like an interesting place, seems you had a good time there. I've driven through Edinburgh several times but never stopped to have a look around, must get around to it one day. Generally speaking I think you get a much better impression of what a country is really like by visiting smaller towns and villages rather than the big cities. That's not just UK but certainly most countries I've ever visited. Really enjoying the vids of your trip.

Well, as a Scot who has lived and worked in different countries and visited quite a few more, I would tend to agree with you about visiting smaller towns and villages to get a better idea of the country. Nevertheless, I still think that you can get a pretty good idea of what Scotland is generally like from stopping (spending a few days) in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh castle doesn't really have much to do when you get in there. The Scottish Crown jewels are about three items. Plus the museums are ok if you are into military stuff. Needs to be something for kids, and things going on to entertain.

I'm glad you checked out Mary Kings Close that was a good decision. There's another haunted place similar I've never been to called The Vaults. There's a long running UK paranormal show called Most Haunted who visited both locations and in the vaults the camera man got scratches on his body. You might find it on KZbin. I saw Mary's Milk Bar about two weeks ago and wondered why there was such a large queue outside.

@@TheMagicGeekdom it was crazy the sound guy literally felt his body being scratched and had red marks along his body. I try to keep an open mind about that sort of stuff. If you head down the hill just passed the Balmoral hotel heading in the direction of Leith docks there are a couple of nice record shops. One is called Vinyl Villains the other Elvis Shakespeare.

I'd suggest the train to Linlithgow - great Palace and Loch, there's an extinct volcano (Cockle Roy) above the town that's only a 5 minute walk and on a clear day you can see clear to Berwick and across to Stirling & the Trossachs - then, if you have the time a canal boat trip to the Falkirk Wheel. (Falkirk home of Irn Bru, Red Telephone Boxes & Cannons - Carron Ironworks) Next would be Stirling and across the Forth to Culross and then to Anstruther (and it's award winning chip shop - you really need to try an actual take-away chip shop) on the coast and back to Edinburgh across the bridges.

Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture that had been made by Brodie. Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable façade and his real nature, and this paradox inspired him to write the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which he published in 1886.

Interesting to see Alexander Monro mention as buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard .He was part of a family of successive generations that had connections to the Medical School in Edinburgh and indeed the founding of it. The Monros owned the property of Bearcrofts , Grangemouth which happens to be the farm where my mother was born , now sadly it is buried under the oil refinery there.
