This works for vlogs, not for films... The more organized you are in your pre-production the more you can do with it in post... Some of the best and most creative edits have come from extensive planning and pre-production! Also, I've tried making films without scripts... shit-shows they were!

Tbh, oftentimes a film can change drastically in the edit (for the better). Nothing stops you from shooting more footage btw. However, feature films have so many moving parts that you can't really redefine them after they've been shot... Although Star Wars is a textbook example of a film made in the edit.
@mg6945
@mg6945 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Casey really doesn't do much narrative, story-driven, filmmaking. HIs work is more documentary. But also, at the same time, he is right that an edit can save a narrative film. Look at Star Wars for the one of the most famous examples of this. A lot of that film was fixed in the edit. But, it wasn't entirely written in the edit either.
@cybernetichorizon8602
@cybernetichorizon8602 3 жыл бұрын
@@mg6945 Casey is still building narrative though, docs are still bound by narrative structure - they have peaks, valleys and crescendos. The thing is though that he has a film education and has probably internalized story structure to an subconscious level.

In animation it is almost the complete opposite. I often form the edit as I shoot since any extra footage is time wasted animating. Editing is simply a place to refine, add audio and fx, and fix any pacing issues.

We recently shot a video and we HATED it. What we had planned just didn't work out but we managed to edit it in a completely different way and bring it to life. We also shot a vlog with zero planning and the edit turned out great! Better than we even imagined. So, in short, we totally get what you're saying here! Although, my brain doesn't usually work well with zero planning, but great things seem to be happening with less planning right now!

Casey said that he "writes" the edits. I think that's a psrt of pre-prod already. I think he meant that he plans first what the edit becomes before he shoots. So it's like story boarding and script writing altogether

Ok, we know he shoots documentary style for KZbin and other platforms. But one thing I would add... is, if you do more planning in pre-production, even for a doc, you won’t have to shoot 30 hours of footage to get 3.5 minutes of runtime. Think about how much time you’ll save in post. Just a thought...

Planning your filming goes along away. A classic example is drones loads of people say just record the whole time well maybe when battery's lasted 10 minutes bit high end drones ar nearing an an hour of flight time that's to much crap to sort through although thoosebthat don't edit probably disagree

1. Stop saying movies unless it was actually a movie. Not surprise he would talk like this though. 2. Sure editing is where it all comes together and lots of unplanned magic can happen, so you could say it’s all in the editing. BUT the way he’s describing it makes it sound like he goes in with no plan and makes it all up after - might get away with it in vlogs, but it’s for damn sure he ain’t ever made a real movie.
