I wonder if she was hermaphrodite, and her parents displeasure resulted in their unkindness towards her. I cannot imagine how they would deal with such a matter in the 1880's, certainly it would have been kept secret. I do, however find Edith a fascinating and likeable person. She is genuine.

shame about the accent. Why is it that American accents are so hard on the ears. It stumbles around the English aristocratic discourse and the pronounications are mainly wrong. Leave Edith Sitwell to us-the British-and you do Miss Monroe.
