First of all great review Florian, I really love your work! I've been a huge fan of Benn Tk since his first KZbin video and he's been an inspiration for me both on deciding to quit my job to travel the world and for my upcomming edits. My next video will contain some related effects. Took me months to figure out how to get those masks and transitions that smooth but I'm pretty sure he uses many plugins winthin AE. To get the doors masked out and animate them you most likely will need to use Mocha (the free built-in version will do) and for the traffic light he probably uses one of the trapcode suite plugins by Red Giant (those are quite expensive). In his Thailand video he uses a comparable effect zooming into that girls tattoo. Anyway I'm happy to see that Benn is really getting the credits he deserves 😁 cheers!

Wow, so many insights man! I literally have no idea about any of these plug-ins or additional software. I totally believe you that its taken you months to learn it and definitely have to check your stuff out then!! For sure, he deserves an insane amount of praise for that sick edit 😃

Nice video mate. But several times you mentioned speeding up the clip in post will add motion blur. It will not.
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
I mentioned it all in one yes and you're right, it doesn't automatically add motion blur just speeding a clip up. In Premiere it does require a bit of an additional step, in after effects im not a hundred percent sure since I myself only use that sparringly. Thanks for pointing it out 👌☺
@MiDaY_i5 жыл бұрын
the motion blur on the sped up parts, is he doing it with frameblending? in premiere pro..... plus I totally love your analysis.... it's just confirming my ideas of how he did these shots...
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
That's actually a super good question! In Premiere you can add motion blur like this yes, but that's usually difficult to connect with speed ramping, because with speed ramping itself premiere can't create motion blur only with frameblending, so I assume he's doing it in AE, or I think I heard of a plug in in once called "real smart motion blur", but not sure actually! That's awesome, man! Super pumped to hear that 😃 also funny and reassuring for me since i'm not always 100% sure how they do the effects myself 👊😃

Really amazing edit. Totally agree. Do you think he planned every shot beforehand? Or is the idea for the edit came to his mind after he got all these shots? How in the world could he be able to plan all shots before traveled there?
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be able to tell exactly for sure, but what I assume he did is what everyone calls "shoot to edit" so he already knows how to take certain shots beforehand in order to make them connect well in post like the ones on a gimbal going close to the eyes, but then again it's very unlikely that he has the video in his hand already planned out shot by shot. you shoot it so that you can edit it well together but you don't know what actually fits until you start the edit and then it's like putting together a puzzle. you don't know what actually fits before you try it. you put shots together, they work or they don't and you do that until it's finished. that's how I do it and can imagine it's similar for him as well!
@rob-fischer5 жыл бұрын

the same way he did the clock is the same idea u came up with for the Eiffel Tower... probably took a steady shot of the watch... then in post masks out the hands... clones the background to fix it and animates the hands of the watch manually... then a zoom in and time-lapse of the bother clocks I guess
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
That could be an explanation!! Another thought I had is that it might have been a time lapse, but that would have taken hours... So your explanation probably correct! 👌😃

It's funny that these guys are getting so much attention on KZbin, because the OG of this style of editing is Matty Brown. Not only does he have excellent transitions and sequences with time lapse, hyperlapse, match cuts and cutting to the beat, but he actually creates a real visual story with his work. His sense of sound design and timing is bordering on inhuman. And he was doing this years before any Sam Kolder, JR Alli or whoever is on KZbin these days. Every one of these people stand on his shoulders. Watch Bipoland by Matty Brown on Vimeo, also watch Daydreaming Italy. His video Dear Japan (also on Vimeo) was edited from footage that was shot by someone else, which shows that his skill as an editor goes beyond his own work. And they were posted 7-8 years ago.
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
That's crazy! Didn't know any of this and never heard of him before, but that kind of proves a big thesis I talked about in another video and that is that in the end it's not the nest artists who make it big in this world but the ones who know best how to market themselves! And I guess that's where he fell flag against the other guys and eventually nobody cares who was first, but only who they saw it doing first 🙈
@raksh95 жыл бұрын
Hi Florian! Matty Brown was doing hyperlapse with eye-zooms and tower-circles before just about anyone on KZbin. Brandon Li (who I'm sure you are now checking out) lists Matty as a big influence, and you can see Matty's influence in Leonardo Dalessandri's Watchtower of Turkey, which is another big influence on today's crop of KZbinrs. Leonardo Dalessandri is actually a trained cinematographer who regularly shoots commercials with an Arri Alexa or RED Dragon, but he shot Watchtower of Turkey with a Panasonic GH3! If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend that one, too. What makes Matty even more remarkable is that he is completely self-trained. He went from suicidally depressed and semi-homeless to making commercials for Lincoln car company, self taught. He's now working as a freelance director.

The only think i like about these videos is how much effort they put into making certain effects... but i honestly sometimes feels that there is no story and in order to actually see the place and beautifully sceneries i have to pause and some times can't even see those.

Nice video, although I would like to see more info on HOW he actually did it. At this point you're describing what we as a viewer already see. Subscribed anyway though!

You're totally right about that! One many of these effects it would be super worth to make like in depth tutorials on that, that would just make the video explode in length and also I felt like there are already dozens of tutorials on each of the effects, so that with me making another one wouldn't provide that much more value. This series is really just meant to give a superficial explanatory overview of the full videos instead of the single effects. That might come in the future when I actually feel confident that I can recreate them. Hope that makes sense, pumped you're subscribed anyway! Welcome to the channel 👋😀

Now that i have watched your breakdown videos 10 times back to back.. the question is, why i still cant replicate ben tk filming and editing skill or technique.. 🤔 i think ill need to replace my brain with amd trhread ripper very soon.
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
haha maybe now you should pick one technique and practice to shoot and edit it 10 times back to back. then do that with all techniques and then no thread ripper needed at all 😜

Ok now we know how it was edited, but the question here is, what kind of pc you need to render that???
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
haha good question!! But I bet it's just a beefy laptop that should suffice to achieve that and a bit of time on the export 😅

Could you analyse someone who needs help with their videos? There's heaps of people doing great work around the globe but don't have their A game on in editing, they could use some subtle collaboration assistance 🤗
@FlorianLand5 жыл бұрын
Haha you're totally right about that. So here's what I'm planning to do: I'm thinking of once per month doing a stand-alone video or something like a longer live stream analysing viewer videos that were send in for feedback! That way everyone not only gets to see what does work but also what does NOT work! I would then though choose which videos to feature. I know other reaction channels that do similar videos about singing that then have built a patreon page on which they offer a reward to get a personalized feedback. This is something I am also sometimes thinking about, but only if any actually thinks that would actually be valuable and there is some real demand for this. what are your thoughts on this Edgar? Very curious!

I would love to see that. I like where you are going with it. It would be nice to see some not so perfect videos be critiqued and your advice given on improvement. That would be very helpful too. You should reach out to Benn and them when you do these and see if they can feature on theirs to help you grow. Benn is usually pretty good about replying to most of his comments. This needs to grow. Good niche man.
