@iTs Messiah: I think the recent bombing of our airbase in Jammu is much bigger than the Balokot strike. Congress in 60 years had gradually made Article 370 irrelevant with the consent of Kashmiris in a democratic faction. And Making Ram Mainder by Blackmailing judges is nothing to be proud of.

Agree UPA did realize that role of government in public goods sphere specially to protect the poor sections and start initiating those. What we white collar workers don't realize is that we earn more when the population below our economic level has enough money to buy the goods that we help produce and distribute in economy. The investment in MANREGA, education, along with being a moral obligation was also a wise use of tax money of middle and rich class in creating more wealth for them.

Sujitji, Prof Arunkumar is right, if you are "a have not". (definitely a huge majority) Mr Chauhan is right if you are "a have". (definitely in minority) There was no debate because there was no common ground. Unless the focus of current regime changes from religious majoritarianism to economic majoritarianism (which is unlikely); the daunting task will definitely become impossible.

Manmohan Singh's reform was good for the middle class and poverty was also reducing but Modi's reforms are only good for the rich the middle class is shrinking and more people have been pushed into poverty. The optimism in the economy during the Manmohan Singh regime was palatable but now passim in the middle class has set in while the rich are laughing and going to the bank. The poor are dependant on Dole. BJP proudly says they are giving free food to 80 crore people in other wards 60 % of Indians are living on Charity.

Education Loan is costlier than Car Loan, Any damn loan is way easier for rich than poorer and we dont talk about it. Govt job could have sustained economy very well but our IIT and IIM graduate who are top of line dont even consider it as private company pay way too much as compared to it. To be honest our economy is collapsing and we have no way or plan to revive it.

An anecdote from the distant( yes ,it feels sooo long ago ) past but relevant today : One of the post liberalisation budgets was being discussed by Pranoy Roy and his team. One of the panelists was Late L C. Jain ( father of Shreenivasan Jain presently of NDTV ) : others were mostly industrialists. They were generally appreciative of the budget. Prof. Jain raised the issue of rural poor especially women and asked how was it going to help " Protein " intake amongst them . ( He raised other issues too . ) Pranoy Roy being the cheerleader , simply brushed aside Prof. Jain's concerns. Well, the situation hasn't changed much in the last 30 yrs .Prof. Jain was talking about malnutrition .

I agree entirely with Prof Arun Kumar, because the so called liberalisation was done under the pressure of global institutions like World Bank and IMF, which in turn are beholden to the United States, and there is no denying this fact. Secondly it went against the principle of socialism, to which India was sworn through its Constitution. The underprivileged felt abandoned by the State. Yes there was this feel good class which went gung-ho about the salutary impacts of liberalisation. They paid tributes off and on to the American culture of consumerism transplanted on Indian soil, about consumers spoilt for choice because of the sheer variety of wares in the market which often tickled their sense of vanity. The booming of the stock markets. The perceived blossoming of employment opportunities etc. Were we to sum up objectively the reforms and liberalisation were a failure.

One effect of 1991 that is usually not mentioned because it's not strictly economic, is that private media ownership was liberalised completely. So for the last 30 years we've been fed the line that socialism, government ownership and so on are inherently evil, and that privatisation is inherently good. So much so that young people reflexively hate socialism, communism and so on. Whereas all systems require a balance between the two. We're now seeing the perils of over-privatising healthcare, or of other public goods. We're heading in the same direction as the USA, in which poverty is increasing, income inequality is gross and development indicators are dropping through the basement.

I know you wanted to hear something more meaningful from Tarun , to be frank, he is not the right guy for this topic. He doesn't seem to have any deep understanding of the economic to comment on. He is just filing the space and doing what he has learned, management fluff. Here are my two cents, 92 Liberalization (so called) was specially designed to impact 'wants' and not the 'needs'. So middle and upper class got benefitted and poor never realized it.

The debate could have been better and I think though Prof Arun had a point but his own political economic views kind of diverted it. The key issue was government failed to undertsand its role of regulator for ensuring interest of all parts of the society are protected or were not not willing to make the necessary regulatory reforms. Also, the government abonded its role in areas of public goods - education, health, social safety networks, R&D and left that to also private sector alone. So as a result only top maybe 20-25% benefited, the remaining did get access to more goods and services but didn't benefit even a fraction of gains by top 20-25%.

I am 64 now, seen 1980s and now. What I have seen is that our parents and the younger people then could buy things more, more satisfied and peaceful than now. Today's guys are in very high pressure to achieve things, greed, not peaceful and no satisfaction. It is also in education system and in health care. Nothing is enough and more is available to achieve. In my opinion it is only (false) marketing gimmick. Compare the personal home and family life and you will know. If the economic push was given to agriculture and fisheries sector we would be in more better and poorty in village sector would have eradicated.

Today Modi with his degree in " Entire Political Science " leads Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goel, Ravish Kumar have brought down GDP growth from 8.3%, to 7%, to 6.1% to 4.2% to minus 7.3%. Economy is like a game of dominos. If the "poor" falters, the "rich" will eventually be toppled. If the purchasing power in the hands of the poor is not increased...the capitalists will eventually be at loss...heavy loss!! The foundation of the India's economy has always been the poor. If that is shaken by thoughtless schemes like demonetisation, than the financial crisis becomes more evident during the time of emergency. Too much of public wealth in the hands of a private few has added more to this crisis...especially when the govt. comes with schemes that looks forward to draining public money towards a few corporates.

Both are geniuses but ironically any change in policy creates opportunities for smart, well-connected people to reap benefits. If the ratio of rich.n.poor is, say 1:100, the resources allocated and opportunitied created by the state are in very adverse ratio, say 10:100. add to that state's lack if willpower, and spurt irrational practices. I actually don't see a date by which benefits of policy change are justifiably distributed among the corporates, MSMEs, the consumers and the lowest level poord.

Sujit the RSS plant all his life Narsimha Rao on the immediate front brought in liberalization of economy due to the phase of 1989-91 political developments. But the actual reason or pointers which rose from 1977 defeat of IG leading up to defeat of RG in 1989 had the fact written on the wall for the swarn jatis: as a result of reservations for SC, ST and general growth of economic after 1947, that section has risen to seek a share in political power clubbed with the financial power. The SVD govts in states during late 1960s had given the taste of power to OBC across the country. Hence, the skunk Rao got the opportunity to put a break on consolidation of SC, ST, OBC becsuse Mandal was implemented by VPS and if the three join hands with the Muslins, then it woukd have become the last nail in the coffin of swarn jati rule in India. Hence in one stroke of liberalization skunk Rao implemented RSS policy to bring in privatization where the jobs, health, education etc would have gradually stopped reservation for poor and impoverished section. Hence in decades to come it will ensure to take the wind out of the sails of the emerging fronts of SC, ST, OBC + Muslims. And soon RSS took over with first Vajpayee and now Modi at the top. So, this has been the primary objective of 1991 economic policy. Isn't it a fact that the very middle class which had a dream run from 1991 onwards has been the one which in hoards voted for BJP-RSS regimes of Vajpayee and now Modi. In 2004 it brought in MMS only to keep SC, ST, OBC at bay will be ensured through the B Team of RSS called Congress!

POVERTY has not changed in India. It is STILL backwards, uneducated, unhealthy and poor. Sujit, having your marketing friend on did one thing - it showed the cluelessness of the upper caste, the complete disconnect from the reality of the majority. The consultant could not even put together a logical argument. A waste of video space.

The management class is barely five percent of the population. You had better look harder to find out why Modi won a second term. Hint, it's not all joomlas, no matter how much the chamchas insist. A matter building crores of pucca houses and toilets, crores of gas connections, enabling direct benefit transfers through bank accounts, all these can't be ignored.

It is too derogatory to say management consultants are a parasite. Mind you they are the ones who actually break down a complex business problem and solve it, whereas with all due respect to prof and his views, economists generally study theories & formulas and for their thesis around it. An idea, a policy may sound excellent in one's head but the devil lies in the execution and that's where management consultants come into picture.

@@RajveerSingh-hd3yf So why these Mngt Consultants ensured over 3000 business houses filed bankruptcy between 2014-2020 after taking crores in loan of the tax payers money? These Mngt Consultants are skunks proven today and had led to the economic disaster being faced. How is it the manufacturing, transport, textile, construction, hotel, tourism, service, communication etc all sectors are running in loss except farming? It is these Mngt Consultants who asked their reporting staff and team members to vote for this BJP-RSS fascist regime twice as promotions, pay increase, perks etc of their subordinates were under their control. Exactly the way this BJP-RSS fascist regime is using the unemployed youth to tweet at Rs2/- per tweet to earn some thing on a daily basis when they have no regular job.

@@GM_- I agree, it isn’t joomlas. Modi sold hate, and the majority happily accepted it. Not once, but twice, no matter how poor the economy has been. By the way, the toilets installations were pretty dismal. Go read about it, it was largely a failure, but a movie and good hype makes the willfully ignorant content. When hate is involved, actual facts can be completely disregarded because people will believe what they want to believe. Modi will win easily in 2024 even while India continues to deteriorate.

Our population is three times that of the USA. Besides we have to cope up with Crores of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Rohingiyas continuously through our porus borders. China's economic growth depends on their own domestic and foreign consumption. Because of China's role in the Coronavirus pandameic their manufacturing sector is paying the price. India's boycott of Chinese products has a definite impact on China's economy. China is exporting their products through South Eastern countries to India with whom FTA and Bangladesh is the beneficiary. Now Government has decided to levy anti-dumping duty if they use Chinese parts in their end products. The crux of the problem is corruption which has to be plugged for realistic inclusive economic development.
