In this editorial episode, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses the recent decision made by the I.N.D.I.A. Alliance to boycott 14 news anchors. The INDIA bloc's sub-committee on media has released a list of these news anchors whose television shows they plan to boycott in the future.
During a coordination committee meeting led by the Opposition-led INDIA bloc, a significant decision was made to boycott TV shows hosted by specific news anchors. The sub-committee on media, authorized by the coordination committee, has compiled a list of these news anchors, and INDIA parties have decided not to send their representatives to their shows.
After the meeting on Wednesday, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal stated, ""The coordination committee empowered the media sub-group to determine which news anchors' shows INDIA parties will not participate in as panelists.""
They have declared their intention to abstain from participating in shows hosted by the following anchors: Aman Chopra, Amish Devgan, and Anand Narasimhan of News18; Chitra Tripathi and Sudhir Chaudhary of Aaj Tak; Gaurav Sawant and Shiv Aroor of India Today; Prachi Parashar of India TV; Arnab Goswami of Republic Bharat; Rubika Liyaquat of Bharat 24; Navika Kumar and Sushant Sinha of Times Now Navbharat; Aditi Tyagi of Bharat Express; and Ashok Shrivastav of DD News.
The INDIA bloc's goal is to influence public opinion, which they believe has been swayed by the BJP through mainstream media outlets. Opposition parties have relied on social media and independent journalists to amplify their message.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha stated, ""There are some anchors who conduct provocative debates. We'll compile a list of them, and INDIA alliance partners will cease to appear on their shows.""
During the coordination committee meeting, discussions also revolved around matters like seat sharing in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the formation of state-level committees to engage with INDIA parties in various states. The 12 member parties present at the meeting also decided to hold the coalition's inaugural public meeting in Bhopal.
Before the meeting, the BJP sparked controversy by alleging that the Opposition's agenda was to hold gatherings aimed at 'abolishing Hinduism.'
Union minister Giriraj Singh told reporters, ""The INDIA alliance meeting is taking place with the intention to abolish Hinduism, which is evident from what a Tamil Nadu minister had said,"" referring to DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's recent remarks on Sanatan Dharma.

Totally agree with all that you said Mr.Nair. However, you should also realise that sitting in a debate with anchors who are just inviting the opposition only to make a mockery out of them can be demoralising for those spokes persons and may have a negative impact on other areas of their lives. Hence, even though it may not be the best decision, I think this will send a strong message to these Media houses to take corrective measures in the way they allow debates to be run on their channels. We are sick of watching what is going on in the media. Such low standards!!

I don't think it is just the media houses who are to blame. The owners must be in cahoots with the BJP. Let's ask the question, would the same kind of slandering and vicious pulling down that happens to the Opposition happen if the BJP was in the opposition. I am sure it never would. What is happening in the country today is plain religious chauvanism by a group who are in search of a religious identity. This was started decades ago by the RSS. The very fact that they have installed so many saffron hardliners as leaders is a dead giveaway. There is no difference between the low curs in the street and the leaders who occupy the highest and noblest positions running the country.

If spokespersons have gone to debates hosted by these anchors and as you said ripped them, etc, how long should they continue doing it? Why should time be wasted in unpleasant and unhealthy debates? Boycott is the best decision. Many here have expressed at different times including me that we stopped seeing TV because of all the shouting, screaming and hate. If we can boycot, why not parties? Channels too have been boycotted earlier. While doing right thing, one need not weigh it against the loss or consequences for alliance if any. Hope this will make some journalists be respectful and speak of issues concerning common man and Nation and not be govt spokespersons.

Couple of inputs for your reference 1) Ban and Boycott has different meanings.... as I heard INDIA has " boycotted" not Banned these anchors 2) Agree boycotting is not the solution and trend on these lines is not good. Fighting fire with fire is an age old practice. Even if we have a bit of sympathy for the anchor and the conditions in which they work succumbing under pressure, it still rankles that they show no spine in any situation. Even in the most immoral circumstances, where inhuman and downright distressing news needs to be aired in a fair & unbiased way , there when we see the partisan manner its done, its painful. The journalists because primarily that is what the anchors are supposed to be is a big let down. Deciding not have anything to do with them is probably the most dignified method. Hopefully it may give some of them their spine back.

When the anchor claims (6:15) that he is against a boycott culture, he should distinguish between 2 scenarios: somebody (here, the alliance) choosing to boycott themselves (which is indeed their prerogative - note that it is not a ban) as opposed to somebody who is asking others to boycott (which is not their prerogative - as in the case of a movie-watching boycott). It is a perhaps a short-term decision, but like any slap, it is a momentary message with a shock value.

If the opposition wanted, they could have done this discreetly and smartly. There was no need to release a 'list'. This is like putting a target on their backs. This sets a very bad precedent. It basically compartmentalises journalists as 'for BJP' and 'for Congress'. What stops other parties from putting up banners or publicising names like this? If the same thing had been done by any other side, it would still be deplorable. Questioning the credibility of someone is one thing, but it was better to leave it to the public to form their own opinions. The alliance should have announced their names to their own members in private.

I am a neutral person who watches debates, fence sitters like you call us. I notice two stark reasons why this boycott has been made 1) The anchors are not neutral moderators; thry are themselves unabashedly invested in the debates, opining and talking down and bullying panelists. The way Arnab scolds like a school teacher is ridiculous. I dont like Padmaja too , she is a big bully. 2) The opposition parties are not well prepared ij the debates. They just employ mindless rhetoric usually having no facts, figures or decent arguments. The quality of BJP spokespersons and their supporters like Shehzaad Poonawala , Anand Ranganathan, Suhel Seth, Sudhanshu Trivedi is simply outclassing the less articulate ones in the opposition. If you dont come prepared and always deflect , anchors and even audience will be irritated. I find the opposition lacking sorely in their intellectual and articulation skills. Plus their only line of attack is a failing democracy with no numbers or data to support that. So overall I think that the opposition is weak and is running away from the match it cant handle

Sujit We are living in a deeply devided community if the india alliance bans certain news channels as a viewer I may not be watching those channels as well. I am sure that the viewers of those channels are highly polarised as well. If you haven't figured it out we are in a fight for democracy Gandhi style or for a hindutva style of government it is upto you to pick a side of late your stance is unclear.
