Wiki:
Fun and Fancy Free is a 1947 American animated musical fantasy package film produced by Walt Disney and released on September 27, 1947 by RKO Radio Pictures. It is the ninth Disney animated feature film and the fourth of the package films that the studio produced in the 1940s to save money during World War II. The Disney package films of the late 1940s helped finance Cinderella (1950) and subsequent others such as Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Peter Pan (1953).
The film is a compilation of two stories: Bongo, narrated by Dinah Shore and is loosely based on the short story "Little Bear Bongo" by Sinclair Lewis, and Mickey and the Beanstalk, narrated by Edgar Bergen and based on the "Jack and the Beanstalk" fairy tale. Though the film is primarily animated, it also uses live-action segments to join its two stories.
Plot (IMDB):
Jiminy Cricket hosts two Disney animated shorts: "Bongo," about a circus bear escaping to the wild, and "Mickey and the Beanstalk," a take on the famous fairy tale.

I remember watching the crap out of this as a kid. I remember basically ruining the tape with how often I watched this movie. Also, I sometimes catch myself humming songs from Mickey in the Beanstalk.

The reason Jiminy is in this was because his actor went into gambling debt and hung around the studio hoping to get work. The animators would treat him to lunch, things got worse in the 1950s which was why he was in records, the shows and such. For the rest of his life, Disney secretly paid his medical bills to help him out

Wow, I don't think I knew any of that. It does help explain why Cliff Edwards kept turning up on The Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s. A sad comedown for a onetime star of the legitimate stage (he introduced the song "Fascinating Rhythm" in a Gershwin musical).

This has really become one my favorite reaction channel. Even though I'm a Disney fan, Ben has clearly done his research better than I. He's so knowledgeable. That is what make these videos so entertaining. Are you planning to do Disney live action films as well, like Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Love Bug or Davy Crockett? Obviously there are too many of them, but maybe a selected few?

@@EdizAndBen Like I said, some reaction channels are quite shallow, but you have very in-depth videos, like watching behind-the-scenes documentary. Educational even, you could say. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is almost like Mary Poppins sequel, with stellar roles by Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson and so many memorable songs by The Sherman Brothers.

This is one I grew up with on VHS, and even got to see it on TV once! I do like a number of the songs (Dinah Shore has such a timeless voice!) and I think there are some solid animation moments, but I definitely need to rewatch this to finalize my thoughts on it. If I'm right, this is also one of the first projects that Jimmy MacDonald would voice Mickey. He'd replace Walt from this point on. Unfortunately, he sounds more like an impression of Walt rather than making Mickey his own character.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this one! I'm intrigued-I personally didnt mind the Mickey and the Beanstalk section because I thought it was good fun, and liked how it was based on Jack and the Beanstalk (part of me wishes Gigantic wasn't cancelled :( ) but the other half of the film really bored me :( Literally, the Bongo the Bear half was just Bears slapping each other 😅 I liked how they incorporated Jiminy Cricket!

I find it so interesting that the only reason this film exists is bc originally Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk were supposed to be full length movies but again Disney didn't have enough money to produce single narrative stories so they paired these two up together despite having nothing to do with one another and how this is the only package film to do so considering Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were centered around Latin American culture while Make Mine Music and Melody Time were music based films and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was mostly halloween themed (The Wind in the Willows isn't really a Halloween story but it has a darker tone so it fits well with Sleepy Hollow). 12:33 I also forgot to mention that what was count down from the original version was some other characters like originally, Bongo had a chimpanze assistant named Chimpy and they had to watch over two mischievous country bear cubs. twins

I'm always delighted to see you guys react to another vintage Disney classic, even if this one is less than classic (for me the high point is the opening musical sequence -- the title song and then Jiminy's song, which add up to one very extended song composition). I'm old enough to remember when Edgar Bergen and his marionettes would turn up on TV; they were very big stars and I could never figure out why, they didn't amuse me at all. The shifting history of the word "gay" is a book in itself. For a long time it was an underground code word -- in the 19th century it was used among female prostitutes in London to let each other know they were in the same business. Then in the US it acquired its modern meaning early in the century but in a very insidery just-among-us sort of way. It didn't get into public consciousness until the 1960s, and then very gradually.
@DelGuy03
@DelGuy03 Жыл бұрын
Oh -- and English idiom is full of phrases that say the same thing twice: not just "happy and gay," but "ways and means," "unless and until," "why or wherefore," and lots more. It's always been done, it seems.
@laotasurfs1110
@laotasurfs1110 7 ай бұрын
"Gay" had it's own connotation at the time. Less of just an emotion, they would use it for the sort of carefree, unflappable mindset people admired. Happy was a mood, gay was an attitude. PS, the "wet sponge" thing in Bongo isn't random. Back then, stunt divers would outdo each other for fame and attention, not only diving from higher and higher heights, but by diving into smaller and smaller water tanks. The smallest one you could do before you're just hitting dry ground would probably be a wet sponge, lol.

I don’t know why but this was a comfort movie for my sister and I while we were growing up….I think it was because we discovered the VHS at my grandma’s house when we came to visit her and watched it every time we came over. We still reference it today and sing some of the songs at random. Bongo, I believe, takes place in Northern California. I think the reason for the darker male animals and lighter female animals in all these movies is because for the longest time in history, young single ladies wore feminine pastels and lighter colors while young single men wore darker and bold colors that were more masculine. Can’t wait for Melody Time! Johnny Appleseed was my favorite part!

I love Bongo! I laughed at the part where Lumpjaw roared at Bongo with his jaw opened VERY BIG! Bongo and Lulubelle remains my Eighth favorite couple of my Top Ten favorites! The Slapping is maybe a domestic violence, but it's what bears do when they're in love, and in the Lion King Deleted scene "Madness in Scar", Nala made a big mistake slapping Scar with her claws, because instead of getting angry or threaten to attack her, the slap makes Scar in love, When Carnivores are in love, they always say with a slap! Lol 😂😂😂😂

There was yet another narration for Mickey and the Beanstalk when a truncated version was aired on an episode of "The Mouse Factory" back in the 70's. This time it was Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop, reprising the roles of Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. Willie's voice was even re-recorded at the end, having him say "What's the matter with her?"

I have personally watched Fun And Fancy Free a million times since it was available to stream. I've seen Mickey And The BeanStalk on VHS a billion times. I prefer Fun And Fancy Free mostly because they edit some scenes out of The VHS releases. My only criticism with Bongo is that with The Bear Love Song it kind of feels like the story hits a brick wall. But the song is for Bongo's benefit. I do like the song where Bongo and LuluBelle meet for the first time The Teddy Bear Cupids are ADORABLE When it comes to who narrates The Mickey And BeanStalk segment I prefer Edgar Bergen and his puppets Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd over Ludvic Von Drake and and Herman in The VHS release

The movie overall is dull, which is odd to me because it adds up to a lot less than the sum of several of its parts, which I actually like a lot. I'm neutral on Bongo --- it's just okay --- but I like the rest of it. Jiminy is a lot of fun here --- he's just a carefree drifter who likes to invite himself wherever he sees a good time, and mooches off other people's parties while somehow not being a dick about it (curious behavior for an "Official Conscience", no?). And I find the Edgar Bergen scenes with Charlie and Mortimer genuinely funny (what can I say --- taste is taste). My favorite part of the whole thing is when we first encounter Mickey, Donald and Goofy in that faux-dramatic scene of starvation and madness. And Bergen's droll narration is great there. ("IS he okay, though? I wonder. He's suffered too much...") But yes, it is a very fair question to ask "Where are her parents?" 🤣

You mention this is the most boring Disney movie, this movie is still a piece of shit, and the package films I'll say once again are the worst Disney movies. 4 of them got a 1.5/10, and I gave this one a 3.5/10, and that's still a pretty low score. Ichabod and Mr. Toad was the only package film that got @ least a 6/10, and that one got a bad but not terrible. But the other ones are complete garbage.
