"Master of Puppets" is about drug abuse. There are allusions to heroin (sucking darkest clear / needlework away) and cocaine (chop your breakfast on a mirror). In the middle, the calls for the Master fade away as the drugs kick in, and on comes the mellow part as the user is experiencing the bliss of the drugs. Then slowly, the effects start to wear off, and the yearning for the drug becomes even greater. Most of the song is presented from the drug's point of view, how it's trying to lure you in. After the epic middle solo, the song switches to the user's point of view, asking where the dreams are that the drugs promised. needing its fix (Fix Me!). The drug then answers it's worth the sacrifice as it revels in snaring another victim (I will run through you, now I rule you too).

Bloody Marvelous explained the song way better than I ever could. Why it sounds better when you close your eyes is because you are basically cutting off one of your senses giving more "processing power" to the other senses (basically the song is so good that when you tun sight off and can give your ears more processing power you appreciate it even more)

It’s double-noice, because for so very very long, all metal was just considered noise. But, if you have a genuine appreciation for music, and ability, or indeed are a musician, you can find greatness in any genre, and in metal, there is some considerable skill and talent (granted, much and all as I love Metallica, their skill-level is not huge, but their arrangement of songs is beyond doubt).

"If this is how all Metal songs are . . . " Metal is one of the most diverse genres of music there is. Does it all hit this hard from the start? No. A lot of it hits a hell of a lot harder. And some of it builds slowly. And some of it's fast and some of it's slow. And sometimes it's so different that you're not sure what you're listening to. And there are more sub-genres than any of us can keep up with. And the entire definition of the word Metal has changed drastically over its 50-year history. Hell, you've only heard Metallica so far, and even Metallica has changed drastically over their career. In short, there's just no such thing as how all Metal songs are. If you intend to explore Metal further, I suggest that you talk with a wide variety of Metal listeners, and have them tell you what THEY like. You'll get as wide a variety of answers as you will people you ask. There are several bands (like Metallica) that are so iconic that they'll appear on nearly every list, and there are some bands that will only be cited by one or two. That guy with the real loud car is into Rammstein. The Librarian likes Apocalyptica and Nightwish. That old guy over there swears by Deep Purple, and he's wearing a Black Sabbath T-shirt. His buddy prefers Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. That one weird kid that nobody talks to listens to nothing but Tool. His equally weird father likes Fates Warning. The middle-aged guy with the goofy hairstyle is all about Motley Crue, and his wife likes Van Halen. The Punk rocker who doesn't like Metal at all makes an exception for Motorhead. The angry political-science student wants to force you to listen to Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down. The intellectual will tell you (in vivid detail) all about Rush. And the atheist believes in Ghost.

"how is that it's there when I close my eyes?" Well, that's how metal music works. Country music tells a story with words, EDM tells a story with music and imagery, pop/hip-hop/r&b/rap tells a story with emotion. But metal, as you have already noticed, uses a variety of instruments and vocal styles to tell a story with ALL of the above named story telling techniques packed into one song. OK... so much to say... where to begin... The Song -------- The puppet master referred to in this song is cocaine. If you notice in the little phrase "chop your breakfast on a mirror" it's kind of a dead giveaway. Also, the song itself reflects the highs and lows of addiction. There are parts of the song that are very fast tempo, and those are the parts that somebody is wanting the drug. And then when they get the drug there are parts of the song that are very mellow - that goes along with that high you get from the drug. The Genre --------- Metal comes in an unbelievable number of subgenres. Metallica is the biggest metal band of all, and they are in the thrash metal or just plain heavy metal category - kind of the umbrella category. There are subcategories of every kind you can imagine. Doom, black, goth, industrial, speed, death, groove, symphonic, folk, and even pirate metal... and that's not even all of them! There's even EDM metal. Truly something for everyone. The Rules -------- Yep. There are rules when it comes to reacting to metal on KZbin. 1. Whatever you do, NEVER pause during a solo - especially an epic solo, like a guitar or drum solo, or something of the like. Just don't ever do it. 2. Always wear headphones (earbuds are OK, too). As long as the sound is not coming from your external speaker, then it will be a better listening experience for the subscriber. 3. Be open minded. In metal. you will hear certain things that you are not used to hearing. For example, there's something called the growl. This is something you will hear quite frequently. At first you may not appreciate it, but keep an open mind. Trust me on this - it just might grow on you. The Recommendation ------------------ Now, I suggested this particular song because I think it's the best overall metal song ever made. And if you're going to get into heavy metal, I figured _Master of Puppets_ was the best way to introduce you. But now, I'd like to recommend to you one of my favorite bands - Bloodywood. It's an Indian street metal band, with a bit of rap thrown in. Think Linkin Park or Rage Against The Machine, but with more curry. 🤘 These guys are very talented, funny as hell (they've done some metal parodies of popular songs) and many of their songs have really important social messages. They have true integrity and actually put their money where their mouth is. Here are a couple of links for you to get to know them. Make sure you _always_ watch until the very end because they often have funny bloopers or very important social messages. Ari, Ari - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2WponqGh7aKfK8 Machi Bhasad (Expect a Riot) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/faTcZqaArpqSaZY Jee Veery - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKatoIGVfp6YmLM Endurant - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpfNhZWPZ7Otqa8 ---------- I do hope you found this information helpful. Some lesser known bands: Steel Vengeance, Saint's Anger, Saint, Grip Inc., Fight, Sacred Reich, Tank, Nuclear Assault, and a bunch more. If you want to get into songs with deep meaning check out RUSH, Pink Floyd, Kansas.

MEANING - so the song is about the use and addiction of drugs - spoken in the voice of the drug - 'come crawling faster and obey your master.'. The user is an addict and a slave to the drug's effects. The aggression at the onset is the feigning - the need for a hit. The line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" clearly refers to cocaine. The melodic part of the middle is the representation of the high-effect; it has a little psychadelic appeal to that interlude. But the effect isn't long lasting. The user then screams to the drug 'you promised only lies. 'all i hear or see is laughter.' Then he yells FIX ME - as the aggression returns, and the guitars wail, and builds back to the part of the drug ruling the addict but nothing can stop it even as it's killing him. A great anti-drug song if ever there was one. parents in the 80s were convinced metal was the devil's music. Metallica was telling us 'don't do drugs.'

It's amazing just how much of an influence Hard Rock and Metal has in the HDM/EDM genre. Especially Hardcore and Raw. Both genres of music are awesome! Glad you are finding Metallica! Oh we're popping a cherry here... IF that's the heaviest you've listened too? Ok... try this on for size. Slayer: Raining Blood. I know, I know, we should probably be suggesting Cannibal Corpse: Meat hook sodomy... But lets start the guy off on the easy stuff. Oh, and the closing your eyes part? It removes the distraction. All you have with your eyes closed is the music, and if you let it, it will paint a picture for you. Something complex compositions -- rarely found in mainstream music but oft found at both ends of the spectrum in classical and metal -- are capable of. Hence why "symphonic metal" is also a thing. Nightwish and Epica paint pictures and tell stories with music. Early Metallica did the same.

@@Metalton95 Yeah I mean, they only basically DEFINED the genre, and how dare they do power ballads or have variety, instead of bashing out nothing but songs like Romanticide or Devil in the Deep Dark Ocean. :P Though Nightwish's latest album is a radical departure in tone. It's good, but the metal has been dialed back. I do love how Troy's increased presence has given them a vibe more along the lines of In Extremo.

I've been a diehard Metallica fan ever since. After all these years I can say with serious conviction that Master of Puppets is the #1 best album they have ever done, period! Eight perfect songs, and in 1986 I owned it on vinyl! Had to flip the damn thing repeatedly. Not one of these 8 songs was weak. None. I've had them all memorized since 1986. I can't remember major events in my life that happened after 2000, but I know every Metallica song from MOP and AJFA by heart. That song was the perfect choice to introduce to this guy. battery has this nasty upbeat double stroke that makes it fucking hard on the tempo played i'm on team battery, if you think it's easy, you're probably smuggling that upbeat a lot, or just have a knack for it, it's one of the exceptions to metallica songs i can't even play the intro riff of properly i do inverted chords all the time and i'm pretty good it but it's the timing that murders, if you have experience with fast ska music and the strong/isolated upbeat on the 2nd tick instead of the first, you do have an advantage in playing it properly (the thrash intro, not the classical guitar actual intro, i can play that) defintely 2x harder than blitzkrieg, i don't think it's any much harder than trapped under ice to be honest, nd justice for all is deffo the more tehcnical album all-round, no contest, and one where lars ulrich probably showed his best drumming game in his whole career too and to be fair though, many of of the first album riffs were created by dave mustaine, who technically blew them out of the water with the megadeth versions. mechanix > 4 horsemen in terms of skills, but i still prefer to listen to 4 horsemen, i don't like dave's vocals :D

When you move out of your usual genres, you realise all music is related - Musicians who can play heavy metal are usually, in a general sense classically trained, that means they've studied music theory from the earliest roots of chord progression and listened to a variety of music. As music fans we owe it to ourselves to get out there and listen to the widest range of genres to fully appreciate why things work in their own context.
