Yeah, Metallica's actually all about the switch-ups between slow, pretty, haunting melodies and heavy bombast. Kind of their signature style. A lot of metal bands just go for 100% maximum intensity for the entire song, but this style is all about appreciating the intensity by contrasting it with the slower parts.

This song is based on an anti-war novel called “Johnny Got His Gun”, which was published in 1938. The novel’s author, Dalton Trumbo, also wrote and directed a film adaptation of it which was released in 1971, and scenes from that film feature heavily in the music video for “One”.

The greatest yet worst music video of all time. The greatest because we finally got to see a Metallica music video. The worst because Metallica made a music video. Also, does anyone else sing "keep the home fires burning" after this song every time they hear it?

Jay McCarty as much as I like the music video, it really does take away from the emotions of the song musically because of that last part. The way it was written and performed is so powerful, and the way it just abruptly ends snaps the listener out of the trance.

Definitely check out the official video now that you have heard and understood the majority of the lyrics. It will make the official video make 100% sense. Also.. the reason this music takes you on such a journey is because it is generally built on classical music theory rather than just repetitive simplistic catchy hooks that are prevalent in the more pop-oriented or rap-oriented musical styles. Not hating on those styles because they are just as valid musically as the more complex metal styles... the target audience is just different for each. When people who have been fans of the pop-oriented styles get bored with the simplicity of that style and they are introduced to more complex music of Metal they tend to be blown away by the complexity if they truly listen and not judge it based upon the instruments and/or speed itself. It would be the same for expansion past pop-oriented towards blues, jazz, big band, ragtime, or classical music. Each of those are more complex than the majority of current pop-oriented music and would have similar effect on the listener if they were so inclined to give those styles a chance. I have, personally, been most comfortable in the comfort of Metal music for nearly 40 years now and I keep finding new forms of Metal to enjoy even to this day.

I’ve loved Metallica since I was a teen in the 80’s. (Not really into any of the other metal bands except for a few songs here and there, e.g. Disturbed, Pantera.) I’ve also grown to love Classical music and, believe it or not, Hank Williams Sr. He’s my very favorite artist, even better overall than Metallica, who is a close 2nd. I love *good* music. I’ve learned over the years that there is damn good music that has come out of all genres - metal, rock, classical, country (especially old country), hard rap, folk, and even a couple from opera! 😁 Metallica made damn good music and that’s all there is to it. (They even put out a country-ish song called “Mama Said” that is really and truly good, and even more so knowing it’s from Metallica.)

You remind me a lot of the channel Lost in Vegas. They’re hip hop/rap fans who started reacting to metal music like 2 years ago or so. It’s just magical watching new listeners see the power of Metallica and metal music. You should absolutely listen to Holy Wars by Megadeth next. Dave Mustaine, Megadeth’s guitarist and vocalist, was Metallica’s original guitarist and he SHREDS. If you’re feeling really adventurous and willing to dive into more heavier material, you should listen to Gojira, particularly Heaviest Matter of the Universe or Flying Whales. That band is unreal in terms of talent, intensity, and depth. If not, then I’d definitely recommend War Pigs by Black Sabbath (the fathers of heavy metal), Holy Diver by Dio (easily one of, if not the, best voices in metal), or the Trooper by Iron Maiden.

Metallica does the lyrics first then builds the sound around what the words feel like. From the start the guitar is his pain, the drums and bass are his beating heart as he holds his breath, his voice is begging God in darkness to stop his endless waking pain & the solos are his flesh and nerves searing in agony. He is not in a coma he feels everything they do to his body but he can't speak. you should see the music video this is based on a book in the book they stick a wire into his brain and i dont want to spoil it because the video ads so many layers of depth that i'd like you to see it (maybe you already have im speaking from the present into the past as if it was now lol) mplease see the video. they bought the rights to the movie just so they could make a video about the book.

The song was inspired by a character in an old movie (Johnny Got His Gun). He was blown up in the war. He lost his arms, legs, his lower jaw, his sight and his hearing. He can't move or hear or see or speak. He's alone in the dark and can't even tell if any other people exist. He's a world of only One. There's no way for him to even tell the difference between being awake or asleep. He imagines a whole new universe in his mind. The doctors assumed he was a vegetable and later are horrified to find he's conscious. His only way to communicate is Morse Code. He taps his head on the pillow to spell out S-O-S and later K-I-L-L M-E. Check out the official video and maybe even watch the movie.

It's about a soldier who steps on a landmine, and loses everything. Arms, legs, sight, hearing, etc. But the doctors are keeping him alive to run tests on him,, and he's begging for death.

As some others have said, this song is about a WW1 soldier that stepped on a landmine and lost his arms and legs, but also his hearing, sight and speech. He 'wakes up' in a hospital as a numb torso not knowing if he is dreaming or awake, dead or alive. He learned morse code from his father before the war and all he can do is nod his head in morse code to say "Kill me". It is based on a novel and movie of the same title 'Johnny got his gun' Personally I've never read the novel but the movie while being old, is still a masterpiece. (edit: except in the movie he is hit by a mortar round) This song does it justice and portrays the horror of not only war but the aftermath of what it does to people. The drums and guitar symbolize machine gun fire. Very well done.

Awesome that you're getting into Metallica. This is probably my favorite song of theirs, but they're such a diverse band. So many different sounds. You should check out Wherever I May Roam, Unforgiven, Unforgiven 2, etc. The list is too long, lol.

Glad you listened to the song without the video the first time. The video can be distracting for someone hearing the song the first time.
