Derek N ehh somewhat not really. People dislike this song because it has a music video, which at the time of you made a music video to a song, it was considered selling out and being “poppish”. The song itself is far from a pop song and the album it’s on AJFA is I think their fastest thrash album. It’s mainly the music video and it really blowing them up that gets hate. Doesn’t take away from the actual song

Historically And Justice was a really dark album, one that they recorded over the loss of their Bassist Cliff Burton who had died while the band was touring a year and a half earlier. One is based on Johnny got his gun by Dalton Trumbo who both wrote the book in 1939 but also directed the film in 1971. Joe is the soldier, who was a son and was engaged to be married and the very last day of World War One is the victim of a mortar shell blast that blinds him, causes him deafness, removes his jaw and nose, and severely injures his arms and legs which have to be amputated. Unaware that Joe is conscious and can still think and feel, he is believed to be an unthinking, unfeeling vegetable. Recognizing that he wishes to be dead due to the extent of his injuries once he becomes conscious and is able to piece together exactly what has happened to him he desperately begins to try to find a way to communicate to the Nurses and Doctors. As a last-ditch effort, he decides to use morse code, using his head to tap out the messages. S.O.S. Help, Kill me. Which at first is misinterpreted as part of his condition slipping until they begin to notice its consistency. The story ends with Joe finally getting his wishes across to one of his nurses who tries to end his suffering but is stopped by a Military superior and ends ambiguously with whether he remains in his state or whether they finally end his misery.

@@pajtim9079 That's because music videos in those days were seen as mainstream garbage for shitty pop music. Because of that, Metallica claimed over and over that they would NEVER make a music video. Music videos were seen as the enemy of real music back then. When they finally made a video, it was almost like treason for the fans. It was like Metallica lied and went over to the dark side. I don't believe they changed to the dark side with Justice, but definitely with the black album and beyond. The "video" you saw was actually clips from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a guy who was so injured he lost all his ability to communicate and move. He could only bob his head, and using morse code, begging someone to kill him. The song was remarkable in its success in dovetailing the movie's message with the song's lyrics and music. Outstanding!

Lars plays incredibly here, and I am talking about the first part, the fast part is of course great, but the first part the fresh and rhythm - pattern is amazing. I've known people who were listening to Metallica before 1989 who were very negative about this album, but they're full of shit as far as I'm concerned. Imho the only valid attack against this album is the lack of bass in the mix, but other than that it's lyrically and musically unbeatable. If you listen to the remixes that have been made with the bass tracks since, it's absolutely unassailable as a quality metal album. I'm biased though, this was the album that got me into metal and defined my music taste for the rest of my life.

The song isn't trash. People thought they sold out because this was their first music video. And it blew up and brought Metallica from kind of the underground thrash metal community to the main stream. This music video Is how I discovered Metallica back when I was in middle school. One is the song that got me interested in Metallica. People/fans like to whine and complain. There are the group that said they went down hill after the "And Justice For All" album. Because the black album was too polished/well produced/main stream/commercial. Then more said the same thing about the "Load" & "Re-Load" albums. And there was the group that lost their sh@t because the band cut their hair for the "Load" album. I like all their albums, except the "St. Anger" album. That one was a let down. And the people that talk trash about Lars are just jealous. He's the drummer for one of the biggest, most successful bands in history. Yea, he must be trash. 🙄😂 I'm sure all the trash talkers just break his heart, while he sits their counting his millions!!!😭🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kill Em' All is the record that pioneered the Thrash Metal genre. There were elements of Thrash before Metallica from bands like Sabbath, Queen, Motorhead and Venom, but Metallica is the band that wrapped it all up into 1 package. My 11th grade English Lit. teacher had us read "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo (the book that inspired the movie that inspired this song). This was in 1990. At the end of the quarter we watched the movie and listened to this song. My dad (a Vietnam veteran of the Marine Corps) saw the book in my bag and asked to read it. He later thanked my English Lit. teacher for making us read it. I wasn't prepared for that. My English Lit. teacher wasn't ready for that. When she asked my dad, he said "War isn't cool. Metallica just did it better than all the other 80s bands so there is a lot of jealousy. Hetfield is the greatest metal front man ever. The riffs, the songwriting, the vocals, the stage presence. Dude was the GOAT

We also need to give Lars credit when it comes to songwriting. And Kirk's awesome melodies.

That's just it. The 80's is when the band was pure. Trust me the 90s is when metal became pop and so did the band. I grew up on metalica but nobody i knew nor myself would listen anymore after their first three.

Yep, if you look their making of the new album videos on their channel, you cant deny the level of input and creation of a song lars brings to the table. Also everyone in the band pretty much states it, lars is the one who actually shapes most of their songs.

The best part about your channel is kinda re-living the first time people heard these songs through your reactions. You guys are without a doubt the best music reactors because you guys take things objectively and don't judge anything by name alone. Keep the good stuff coming 👌

I’ve come back to this vid a few times. Saw it three years ago on the day you released it and now I’ve watched it again. The reactions are great. The song is epic.

I’ve seen a lot of reactions to one but this one was my first, and I always go back to it because it is my ultimate favorite reaction to this song! When you guys say you’re putting it on a playlist makes me happy! You guys are the first song reaction videos I’ve ever discovered, and I’ve been obsessed ever since five years and going still a subscriber!🎉

ya boi E Not iconic. It's part of metal history. If its good/bad/awesomme/crap. Well... Up to each and everyone to judge. I only like the last non melodic part. First part sucks balls, last part kicks ass.

River Feinx Cool.... Would be a really bad thing if we all had the same taste in music. I doubt metallica would be something someone liked, if we all had the same taste in music. I bet mozart or bach or something like that would be the only kind of music people liked. You know, the old hardcore classic music, wich is done to perfection.

I have never heard anyone say this is trash. Or that it isn't metal, because it clearly is. The guys in the video have totally misunderstood it for some reason. Maybe they mistook it for something off of Load, that on the other hand isn't metal and it's trash.

Johan, i've seen people claim this song is shit all the time growing up, I think it was primarily due to 3 things: A.) They made their first music video which prior they were strictly against. B.) This song could really be considered their break into the main stream. It may not be a "enter sandman" in terms of accessability, but it got routine play on MTV. C.) It's post Cliff. Some people are just ardent that anything without Cliff is garbage. To me this is a true example of Metallica's prowess beyond being just a "thrash" band. They had that emotional connection that many of their contemporaries lacked.
