Fascinating, but sad, as it shows the start of the end of The Green. What a fabulous place it was before the planners decided to 'improve' it. Such is the manner of so-called progress. As a North London lad, my memories of it are from the '50s and '60s and I last drove through the area in 1971 before moving away. Fortunately I have never visited what it now is. Thanks for sharing your Uncle Mike's video with us, Laurence. 👍

My family roots are here in Lower Edmonton, remember walking 'up the green' from my Nan's house on Chiswick Road in the 70s. Totally changed now, and dare I say not for the better. The tower block at the very beginning is still there, and the view from the camera view is very much the same today, the car is crossing the border from Tottenham into Upper Edmonton.

I can just about remember what it looked like before the shopping centre was built. A street market and covered mall opposite Dale's. Cinema around the back somewhere roughly where the market moved to. Woolworths on the left towards Bounces. Dad parked behind Dale"s. We lived a few miles to the north but went there a lot. I had swimming lessons after school in the Victorian pool behind the town hall in 1968.

It said 1972 on the (VHS) tape my Uncle left with me, but that may have been when he actually compiled the footage. I'm not sure that any of it is from AFTER 1972. My guess is that it is pieced together from a period between 1970 (which I'm sure was when the existing tower blocks on the green were built) and 1972.

Used to go to edmonton green as a young kid a lot in the early noughties for the library, shopping tescos woolworths etc It was always a little tired looking. Got quite bad around 10 years ago but it seems alright nowadays. Just like many other small malls I think it was a victim of changing consumer habits with people doing all of their non grocery shopping in westfields or brent cross.

I'm only 24 and I remember the old layout of Edmonton Green. Including the road bridge (Forgot the name of the road) over the very front entrance of the Green, where the old Bus Station used to be. Buses terminating there would use the road.

I remember this area before they wrecked it first time around in mid 60s and build that monstrosity of a market hall and horrible flats. With original market on the old disused lower Edmonton station where market entrance is in these photos. Empire at bottom of hill and the rail crossing still next to the cross keys & all the stalls lining the high road outside caters sainsburys etc & all the other shops that ran along the high road. Sad what developers call improvements.
