ENFIELD, MY KINDA TOWN : Super8 film : NIzo 156XL & LA7200 ANAMORPHIC

In homage to the 1960s-1980s travelogue films of Harold Baim I decided to make a short movie about my own home town; Enfield, a suburb to the North of London.
To get the right sun-tinted look, I chose to shoot on real film.
This was all shot on 5 cartridges of Kodak Ektachrome 100D super8 film between autumn 2011 and winter 2013.
It's a great shame that Kodak announced the demise of this colour reversal film stock in December 2012.
Tech Notes: The footage was shot on my Nizo 156XL camera using the Panasonic LA7200 16x9 anamorphic lens adaptor. The film was processed at Andec Filmtechnik then sent to 18-frames.com for HD film to data transfer. Edited in Adobe Premiere.

This is beautifully edited and so well matched to the musical soundtrack, which recalls the work of De Wolfe and the 70s library music used on so many documentaries at the time. It's also a powerful nostalgia fix with more than a passing nod to the famous travelogue films of the late and great Harold Baim. I almost expected Telly Savalas himself to say "This is the view that took my breath away..." Thanks Chris.

Great little film,I lived in Enfield for 54 years, have many good memories of what it use to be like in years gone by.What I miss the most is the parks in the area which were great for walks, Whitewebs,Forty Hall,Trent Park and Epping Forest was only a short car ride away.

Went to Enfield Grammar till 1980. Teachers : English - Cook, Taylor, Turner. Maths - Weeks, Newton. Physics - Coulson, Newton. French Mrs Berriman. Chemistry - Doc Harris. Art - Butcher. Geography - Mr Redhough. Latin - Spry, Walker. English/theatre - Miss Savage. At the end; 29 bus to Camden Town to see bands midweek. Double Physics with a hangover. I was at EGS 1961-68. Recognise all but 3 of those teachers' names. When I left there was concern at the number of staff leaving each year; good to know they managed to retain so many of the old guard from my time.

I actually really like your video - the civic centre looked good with the sun shining on it. Lovely green areas & it reminded me of Dallas. It is changing again as they are putting the cycle lanes in.

Lived in Enfield most of my life and still do. The place has changed beyond recognition. Enfield Town, for example, is slowly dying. Church Street through the Town, so many vacant shops. Gives the impression of a town centre in decline. The market square, reopened to such promise less than a year ago, what a disappointment. A waste of space I'd say. Pearsons alone is keeping the place alive. If or when it goes that will be the Town's death knell in my opinion. Surely the council should and could do more to rejuvenate the town centre. Good film btw, super-8s always create a nostalgic feel.

Yes it's a great shame what's happening in the High Street and there are more and more empty shops. The fish shop seen in my film here is gone now and greatly missed! I've been thinking about maybe making another video about the empty shops phenomenon, but I don't think it would be such a happy picture!

Ahhh, those golden, halcyon days of 2013. Times when you could feed ducks along the tranquil banks of the local parks. Where you could find a great price from your local market trader. Buy locally sourced fish! Go to the disco in the park and have fun with your friends. Or else simply admire the beautifully functioning transport networks of North London.Ahhhhh golden days indeed.

The Enfield I remember had Pearsons, Savilles (record shop), Henekey's (Granny worked there), Hammetts, the butcher (I got 7/6 for a Saturday morning delivery round), ABC and Lyons, buses 107, 135, 231, 629, 313 (green)...............now you've got me going! :)

Very nicely made film, love the classic 60s/70s jazz/funk soundtrack used along with oldskool titles, totally 70s! Also very superior quality for Super 8 film, apart from the slight grain and scratches it looks as good as HD camcorder recording, was the Super 8 film transferred to high definition standard to attain such quality?

Hello, many thanks for the positive comment. I had my super 8 film digitized to files at HD resolution by sending the rolls (and a hard drive) to 18frames.de in Germany. I chose their option for a 'modern 2k' film look, so they stabilized and de-grained the images, I chose this so the film would look a bit more like an old documentary rather than the 'home movie' look you often see super8 film used for. I'm still experimenting with real cine film and trying some home processing too.

Thanks for commenting Louise... Lana Del Rey bought some of my other cine film footage (see my 'California 08' super 8 film) which she used in her 'Video Games' music video and live gigs too. I got a little bit of money from her record company, so I spent it on the film and processing costs that went into this one : )

When the 629s were about Enfield Town was a proper town three cinemas Pearsons a coffee bar opposite a park the odd Arsenal or Spurs footballer about,now its a tip, unrecognizable another foreign country glad I got out in the 70s,the foreigners can have it.

Thanks for commenting on my film. It's true that the shops in Enfield Town seem to be in a bad way at the moment. This certainly seems to be a problem reflected in high streets up and down the country... whatever colour badges the local politicians are wearing ...

Your film has put a lovely gloss on Enfield in 2015...only a very few wealthy areas retain something of the past - the rest of Enfield is 'orrible. The best thing about it is its parks but even in those illegals are known to set up drinking camps.
