Hello. I just wanted to say a quick thank you before writing my assignment on Burke. I’m an english literature student and we have some philosophical works in our course this semester. Philosophy isnt exactly my strong suit but your series on Burke gave me a more thorough idea on the subject than any of the written analyses that I found. Really grateful and looking forward to study from your other videos too, which fortunately are also a part of my syllabus. Yay internet 😁 Hope you have a good day!

Thanks! So glad I found this. I was really moved by Fay Godwin's photography as discussed by Marcia Pointon. Sir Edmund Burke was underscored in context to Ms Godwin's art form..

Hi, Thank you for your work. I enjoy it I'm only discovering Burke's work so forgive me if my question is obvious but I was wondering about God's place in the Sublime ? The terror aspect made me think straight away about St Augustine "You lift your eyes to the sky and you are struck with dread. You consider the whole earth, and you shiver." and Blaise Pascal "The eternel silence of these infinite spaces frightens me." Is the ambivalence of terror and pleasure found in the Sublime only possible because of the Divine? Thank you

what is the word for the positive flip-side version of sublime? what i mean is, the sublime...with its dark and fear inducing elements removed. still awe-inspiring, but rather than the sliver of dread feeling of being overwhelmed, think instead of joyful exuberant rapturous wide-eyed wonder. the words elation ecstasy overjoyed or transcendence dont quite fit....but i don't know what does!

Good question. Personally I think Burke limited the sublime too much by focusing so much on fear and terror, which is why I would think the word 'sublime' should also cover the experience you describe.
