Edmunds took ownership of a 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance last year as part of our long-term test program. Now, one year later, Carlos Lago shares the team's experience after approximately 9,000 miles of use.
What was it like to drive the Model Y for a year? How reliable was it? What kind of maintenance was needed and what issues popped up? What was the range on our Model Y? Is the Model Y one of the best small SUVs on the market? We answer these questions and more. We also detail the highs and lows of owning and driving the 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance.

@@sphaera3809 If you don’t care about the lightening quick acceleration, go with the e-tron. That was #1 choice coming out of a Q7, but there was that issue right when they first came out with the electric cords and fire possibility, so sales were put on hold. Plus, they were way overpriced at the time. They’ve come down since then and the delta isn’t as much since you still get the full $7,500 for the e-tron, which rides MUCH better, charging is faster, and isn’t that far off on the range as Teslas are way over promised on range (I owned a 3 and Y). Now that I don’t need as much room, waiting for the Q4 etron. Should be a winner.

To be clear this is just the display computer, the car is still fully functional to be driven manually during the reboot process, autopilot can keep driving as well but use extra caution since you don’t have visual alerts and only minimal audio alerts and feedback until after the reboot completes. In 2.5 years with the model 3 I manually rebooted probably 5 times across the ~50 software versions during that time. No manual reboots that I can recall in 2021, this was all further back.

@@te86a You dont have to do a "hard power cycle" to reset it. Simply wrong guide by Edmunds, who is always negative biased towards Tesla. Every small or non-negative things get exaggerated. 1) Just see the video how they negatively mention the nice wheels (!!?) - but its ok on the corvette (??). 2) And several times mention the black screen (althoug common on all new cars, and you DONT have to stop - but kan keep going, 3) AND they mention that Tesla say you should only charge to 90%, so range is even less (come on now). Tesla is famous for best in class long lives batteries - and 90% is a recommendation when not going for at long trip. Plenty of taxi's are Tesla and they charge to 100% daily and have 150.000miles on the clock. 4) The full selv driving system is NOT working - everybody is (or should be) aware of that - and probably wait buying it. Tesla is still way in front of their peers - and the FREE Autopilot does the job fantastic (also compared to peers like Benz or Porsche). So do som praise of that instead of only bashing the FSD. Great review…Had a 2019 Model 3 with FSD, then bought a 2020 Y and didn’t waste the money on FSD. Sold the Y after only 6 months. Ride was way too rough compared to my 3 and it was just the LR AWD, non performance version. My Model 3 LR AWD was much smoother and compliant. Was put off by the initial quality of my Y…headliner hanging, dirty as all get up…panel gaps worse than normal, and a few other issues. Back seat alignment was very off…tires with the aero caps on them made loud creaking noises…Never got the shroud for the heat pump on mine, so it was noisy…I loved everything else about the car, but I’ll wait another year or so before considering another one…

Also: at 12:12, you mention you have to pull over for the restart. Not sure exactly what you mean here, as you can perform the display restart while driving. Car journalists see a lot of cars, so they can really judge a car compared to its peers, but they rarely get used to any car so they don't come to appreciate the nuances and skew toward valuing predictable vehicles that hew to the mean over cars with subtle charms but a few quirks.

Agree with Carlos Lago's analysis of the Y Performance 100%,the FSD needs lots of integration and updating,the ride is extremely harsh and uncomfortable,no screen outages on mine,7800 miles and its a '21 model,those wheels are beautiful but extremely easy to damage due to the fact that the wheel rims are flush with the outer edge of the tire walls,both passenger side wheels have curb rashes and me too use a black marker to minimize visible damage.

What do you expect from one of the first of any model automobile, ICE or EV? You purchased a low production number Model Y that was just released! Do you think the BMW i3 was any good, or the Toyota Prius or others for example when their models first hit the streets? Hello! Also, Performance means PERFORMANCE! If you don't like the lowered suspension and 21" Uberturbine wheels, than you should have purchased the mommies non-performance version! Yes, that's right both Autopilot enhanced and FSD are in Beta mode - you knew that when you purchased the Tesla, but it does continually receive updates improving the features, performance and range. Geez! I'm getting sick and tired of reviewers tarnishing the Tesla Brand! Sometimes I wonder if pockets are getting greased by legacy automakers or the oil companies because they dislike Tesla or Elon! I've owned performance BMW's and even a muscle car from the 70's - a 71 Mustang Mach 1 429 Cobra Jet, the first and only Ford product that came from the factory with the GM Rochester carburetor...did you know that? Of course I replaced the Rochester with a re-jetted 800 CFM Holly, electric fuel pump and an Offenhauser high-rise manifold, just to name a few mods. I've been driving and racing cars before you were born! Currently, own a 2020 Red Performance Model Y and love it!

I prefer the y model despite its flaws. All cars have flaws, some more than others. I drive a 2017/Gt 350 which is a long way from perfect. It eats oil , bad gas mileage , panel gaps everywhere, harsh ride, imperfect paint , cheesy interior. All of this coming from a car company that has been in business for over 100;years!. But I still enjoy it!. I think I will be ok owning a Y performance with it’s flaws. I test drove both the 3 and Y performance and just fell in love the way they drive and accelerate compared to my Gt 350. As a result, I have a Y performance on order. I only get maybe 185-200 mile range before my gas light comes on. I will gladly take a 260 plus range from a Ev any day especially when you can charge at home and replenish that range every day. Moral of the story, no car is perfect.

The risk of blowouts is lower. The tires are cheaper. The risk of curb rash is lower. Big wheels with low profile tires are a fad. All of these things are true on any vehicle.

I would love to see you replace the wheels and tires with a high profile set, your car would likely feel like a new vehicle. We have the Model 3 SR with about 10,000 miles on it. I stayed with the higher profile tires for all of the reason you outlined, I have also had more flats with the low profile tires due to pot holes and curb/debris along the road. The standard autopilot seems to work pretty well, but I have experience the odd slow downs that seem to occur at the same place on many drives too and from work, and my screen has needed to be reset twice. Not because it went dark, but because the audio stopped playing on the media system. Overall it has be a very efficient, quiet and comfortable car and I have been pleased with it. My real life range is more like 200 miles, of which I only use about 175 between charges.

After 40,000 miles with a Model 3 and FSD, I can tell you that I've had MUCH better experience with Autopilot than you have. I use it for about 98% of my highway miles. It has been wonderful. Is it perfect? No, i.e. sometimes it picks up the wrong speed limit (especially on new construction roads) and slows down when it shouldn't. But it also amazes me every time I use it, and it keeps getting better and better. I can't imagine buying a car without it. The system in the Mach-E is nowhere near as good and won't even change lanes for you. In fact, the wheel just stops operating when you turn on the blinker! Just check out the many KZbin comparison videos. Autopilot is by far the industry leader, and it works almost anywhere (in the US at least).

I, too, love my autopilot. I use it daily and it relieves the stress of traffic. I look at other drivers, they're all so tense! @@jonathansage2147 On the voice commands, perhaps. Tesla is not the only car company that's incorporated some voice control. Perhaps Tesla's is better than most but they don't always work well. And how comprehensive are the voice commands. See this... www.bbc.com/news/technology-53666222 Yes the windshield wipers auto turn on and off by themselves, but when the driver wanted to adjust the wiper speed during what was obviously not perfect weather (it was raining after all) the driver had to dig down a list of menus on that screen and got in a wreck. Versus having a manual control right by the steering wheel where I can take ONE hand off the wheel for 1 or 2 seconds turn a dial to change the speed up or down and still be looking down the road with full control of the car. And saying you CAN use you voice for everything sounds nice. But are people actually doing that in practice? Are they saying "adjust temperature to..." in a Model 3 99% of the time, or is it closer to reality to say they are looking down at the touch screen to adjust temp while moving 70% of the time? I suspect the latter is closer to the truth. Now autopilot may be helping control for the greater distraction and having autosteer counter the additional lane swerve it's hard to say. But I'd be curious what the "distracted driving" stats are after a few years of model 3 use vs cars that don't have so much controlled by a screen that takes your eyes off the road.

Glad to see this review. I'm a mostly happy owner of a 2020 Model 3 Standard Range, with no Autopilot or "full self-driving." It's a great car at a great price that's really fun to drive, with great charging infrastructure and okay but overpromised/underdelivered range. My issue is that I'm a professional transportation planner with a degree in engineering, and it's really off-putting that Tesla is still trying to sell something that no respected professional in the field believes it can safely deliver. If they could swallow their pride and put that aside, they'd make a great car, but as it stands I'm losing faith in the company to do the right thing, and I don't think I'd return back for another Tesla. Hopefully by the time my car is due for replacement the charging infrastructure advantage will be a wash.

"respected professional in the field"? Hmm. This sounds a lot like you are trying to justify your view. Do you really think that Tesla will never figure out FSD? Seems to me it's not a question of if, but when. As to overpromised/undelivered range, my experience over 25k miles is that the car delivers exactly what was promised. For Edmunds to ding the car for not meeting EPA range while not using it as per the EPA standard is rather meaningless. Carlos made it clear that they drag raced their car a lot....so would one reasonably expect it to meet the EPA standard?
@jonathansage2147

@@dangrass It can't go the rated range at highway speeds. The EPA test isn't entirely done at highway speeds so folks really shouldn't be using that to determine highway range, but it's pretty obvious that's what your average person is going to do. Tesla really ought to publish range values by a couple common highway speeds, but that wouldn't be marketable so they've chosen the higher EPA range which is effectively meaningless for an actual driver trying to make a long range trip (which is the only time range matters). I own two Model Xs. I love them dearly. The EPA range is still garbage.

Great video guys. My first three months of Model Y ownership has been a very similar experience to yours. I got the regular awd with 19" wheels. Ride is very stiff but livable. Doesn't handle freeway speed weight shifts well. Definitely not a BMW or Porsche quality suspension underneath this thing. I've managed to curb the 19" wheels a time or two, but thankfully the hub cap took the damage. I get the screen freeze ups about once a month. But you can drive while the screen resets, just hold down both steering wheel buttons, no brake pedal. Carlos forgot to mention that the auto windshield wipers are the worst in the business. Other luxury brands mastered this 15-20years ago. Tesla can't accurately identify light rain and wants to wipe way too fast for medium rain. And the non fsd autopilot cruise control is not great either. Does pretty well in the dry, but throw a little rain at it, and things can get quite scary. Like unexplainable max brake check at 80mph...for NO reason. I've seen really scary weird behavior in light to medium rain. Like most cars, it will disable itself in a downpour. I haven't had any loose body parts or other mechanical issues. Had one wheel fender trim loose at delivery, which was fixed quickly. My driver window frequently gets confused. Will stop on the way up and then go back down. Have done the reset procedure, which reduced the frequency, but didn't completely eliminate the issue. I'm getting a Tesla reported 330 watts/mile average energy use on mostly city driving. I haven't confirmed their reporting. And I live in a hilly, mountainous region. I think the burnouts and onramp antics might be affecting your range more than you think. Hopefully Tesla will iron these issues out with their frequent software updates. If not, I may be shopping elsewhere for my next EV.

I'd like to see a review like this of the LR without FSD since that is the most common Y purchased. Honestly if you get the performance with those big wheels and rough ride you should consider it like a sports car. If you'd bought it as a family vehicle, you'd have purchased the LR for the range and better drive quality. As far as FSD is concerned, that's great, but most people don't buy that so it shouldn't be in a review - especially if you are comparing it with the Mach-e for example. I'd love to se a Y LR vs Mach-e LR review and one that compares regular driving ranges (not just highway).
@nowjustanother
@nowjustanother 3 жыл бұрын
Those reviews exist now in several places, including here on KZbin. I have a Mach E, and I compared it with the MY before making my purchase decision. Frankly, the Supercharging network was a huge factor in favor of the Tesla, as was the better UI in the vehicle and in the phone app, and the quicker acceleration. But I could not overlook a few things that tipped the balance in favor of the Ford. First, the overall build quality is just better on the Mach E; while some owners of the Ford have reported squeaks and rattles, they've been few and far between. I've had no problems like that, and I was not at all concerned about my glass roof disassociating itself from the car at highway speeds on the day I picked it up at the dealership. Second, the real world range is very close to Ford's reported EPA range; thats a big deal when trip planning. A few other things were a wash - such as the dealer network. Sure, Ford has more of them, but they generally suck - and few are really all that interested in investing training time and money to teach their reps about the vehicle and its financing options. Finally, while I love my Mach E (it's my first pure EV and the best car I've ever owned), I'd happily consider a Tesla next time - or any other OEM's EV product. Competition is a very good thing, and these cars are only going to get better over time. I get to re-evaluate the market when my lease is up in 2.5 years.

@@nowjustanother it was our dealer experience test driving the Mach-E that helped us decide to order a Model Y instead. I was stunned that the dealer knew nothing about the Mach-E and had no interest in it. We were only allowed to drive the car on city streets (no highway) and had a salesman with us (who knew less about the car than we did). On top of that, the demo vehicle had issues. The mirrors couldn't be adjusted (they'd close when you tried), the hatch couldn't be automatically released, and the drive mode couldn't be changed. It was a stark contrast from our experience test driving the Tesla. We were given as much time as we wanted to drive it (on any roads we wanted to drive on), and they'd sent us links to how-to videos before our test drive so we would understand all of the features of the car. We also had a bad experience with VW and the ID.4. The dealers (we went to two) didn't know much about the car and had added questionable dealer 'upgrades' on the first editions they had for sale on the lot. I really hope Ford et al decide to fully embrace EV to help move us toward sustainability, but right now, it feels like they're doing this as a side job and aren't serious about it. Plus it's pretty cool that our Model Y is made just north of us in California. I don't think Tesla gets enough praise for being an American company making cars here in the US for the US market.

@@nowjustanother It's nice to hear you thoughts. It seems fit/finish are no longer serious issues with MY. But, yeah, they do both get approximately the same real world range on the highway (although the Y is much more with non-highway driving). I imagine you would have gotten an EV incentive too, which would be a pretty big deal. Seems like the Mach-E has everything an EV driver could want. Same with the MY.

Huge Tesla fan here but I can’t understand why somebody would pay 5K for FSD when it doesn’t work yet. If it was 500 bucks ok maybe but 5 or 10K...that’s just stupid. Also, can everybody just stop buying 21’ low pro tires. Of course the suspension sucks and you got a flat tire...what did you expect?

Because Tesla’s master plan says that people with FSD will be able to have their car go out and make them money picking up people and driving them around. It’s like an investment into future cash flow

Excelente video seguir asi.
