I've never heard any recording or live performance of anyone who could sing this as effortlessly and perfectly. I don't generally wish for what can't be but I really regret I couldn't hear her live.

Sie hat eine wundervolle Stimme: Jeder Ton, ganz egal wie unwahrscheinlich hoch, ist klar, brillant und gleichzeitig sanft, warm und tief berührend. Auch die Agogik ist sehr interessant; die Arie ist nicht einfach metronomisch durchgenudelt, sondern weich und flexibel im Tempo, was sie insgesamt noch ausdrucksstärker und für unsere "modernen" Ohren ungewöhnlich macht.

Thanks for this posting. Impressive in the extreme. I'll never forget his passing. I was in freshman Intro to Music Appreciation when Dr. Casselberry announced that Hempel had just died.

Wow! And with such a heavier voice than you would think for back at that time in history! Much closer to a Dramatic Coloratura sound (like it should be) than you would normally hear from that era.

Despite the obvious technical difficulties Hempel has a lovely voice - her low register could also be interesting - not so dark as many others.
