The book explains the stepdad a bit better. Sally (the mom) didn't love him, but she chose to be with him because according to the lore, some humans' scent is so repulsive to monsters it will mask the scent of a demigod. She chose to be with Gabe to protect Percy. As you'll see, she's the real MVP of the series here but I won't say any more to avoid spoilers. Anyway in the book the stepdad is even referred to as "Smelly Gabe" lol Also Cari is right, a lot of fantasy literature, especially kids' lit, shares the same tropes. I'm studying creative writing right now and hope to become a children's fantasy author, and it's pretty much impossible to break away from the tropes entirely. If you guys ever watch Narnia, you'll see some similarities as well. There's also a phenomenon called "comparison titles" in the book/publishing world, where before you submit a novel to agents or publishers you find books that are similar in content to yours to give them a quick idea of what your book is about and who it should be marketed to. So drawing comparisons in some way is actually necessary. Marketing books as "x story meets x story" is a trend now as well, so for example if I was trying to submit Percy Jackson to an agent I might advertise it as "Harry Potter meets Greek mythology." It's gimmicky but it's a very fast way of explaining the gist of what you've written to someone who is considering whether they can make money off accepting and selling your manuscript lmao Anyway I'm so glad you're reacting to this, excited to see the rest!

not her giving him all the wrong info😭 his name is perseus not persineus, the statue he and his mom were looking was not his dad, it was the hero perseus from greek legends, who sally named percy after. he’s a half-blood, as in half god, not a wizard with one muggle parent. The only similarity is the word. Hermione isn’t a half blood either btw she’s muggle-born. Both her parents are human/muggles.

In addition to your outro, the Lord of the Rings is like the bible. LOTR got inspired by Norse and German myths and the bible. The bible got inspired from Egyptian, Greek and pre-Islamic Middle Eastern myths. I'd want to recommend the books written by Dr. Richard Carrier, I bet you guys would love those content

Just a point of information. Hermione is Muggle-born (two non-magical parents) Snape and Voldemort are Half-bloods (one non-magical and one magical parent) and Harry is also considered Half-blood because his mother was Muggle born and his father was Pure blooded. There is a reason why she's with that guy (not love) they don't explain it in the TV show so far or in the terrible movies. But in the books it is explained that the mom picked him purposely because his body odor was so strong that magical creatures couldn't smell Percy over mom's boyfriend when he was around that man. So his strong body odor kind of shielded Percy's half blood smell.

And thats coming from someone who never read the books 😂 so thats my main reason for not liking the movies but I’ve read that the book readers hated the movies due to lack of detail and how it was just a bad adaptation overall. Even the author of the books hated the movie!

Was wondering how you folk were going to handle it when Percy brings up "Jesus". The connection is obvious - a demi-god occurs when a god has sex with a mortal. Whoever the author of the book called _Matthew_ was, he knew Greek stories and added the whole incarnation by a god impregnating a virgin, then the author of _Luke_ modified it to fit his own beliefs. It's awkward to bring up around evangelical Christians, they don't like to talk about it, but the "Christmas story" is really a variation on Greek demi-god stories.
