love0the0fans I wholeheartedly agree! I was in the marching band in high school 37 years ago, and I still miss it. There’s nothing like that pounding drum and brass feeling that gets your heart pounding and the crowd worked up. These kids are so talented!

I wasn't in the band. I was a cheerleader. I attended Jack Yates High School in Houston's 3rd Ward (the same school George Floyd attended; didn't know him. I graduated six years before he did). Let me tell you, our band was the baddest!! And our drumline was awesome!! After halftime, the band would,, of course, march back to the stands, while the drumline would stay behind and put on its own show on the sidelines!! It also helped that we had a winning team. (We were State Champs in 86.) After the games, we would go back to the school and have a "block party", and the band would, again, put on a show. It was magical times! I wish I could relive just ONE day, even if it's just in my dream. .

One of the things I truly wish would happen is the uniform of the female drum major. As a woman who broke the glass ceiling of my school in 1977 as the first female drum major I was determined to show my skills and ability to March against any male, yet allow my femininity to come forth. My mother petitioned the Band Director to allow me to design a uniform fitting for me. I ended up having the exact same uniform as the males but instead of pants I wore shorts and majorette boots with big tassels. Still had the high hat and the cape!
