Edna's dog Batley is put to sleep in Emmerdale (February 2002)

Edna was never seen without her little dog Batley in Emmerdale. In February 2002, Batley became ill and Edna was fraught with worry. Paddy did some tests and a cancerous lump was found on his liver. Edna was determined to pay for any treatment, she just wanted him to be better. But Edna realised after talking to her friend Len that Batley would never get better, and it would be the kindest thing to let him slip away. Paddy gave Batley the injection, and the little dog fell asleep in Edna's arms.
Shirley Stelfox is incredible in these episodes, Batley's final moments are devastating and I do love that Batley fell asleep right on cue! Also makes me smile how Batley won the Best Exit at that year's British Soap Awards over Alma in Coronation Street and Steve Owen in EastEnders!
