Thanks for creating this great video. I just got a '68 Camaro SS396 with a new QJ that has a little hesitation when transitioning to on-throttle from off. With the help of your video I can now check/replace the jets to see if they are the right size for a 396 and perhaps the cause of the on-throttle stutter.

My problem is ... very rich .. and I set and reset it and it stays the same ... and I thought to change the jets , my truck is a c10 83 ... with a 305 engine ...... and sometimes I thought to change the carb for an after market like edelbrock or holley .. .. cheers ..

if you are talking about the choke 'flap', it'll be open if it's warm. if it is 'stuck' open there is some impediment or your choke lever isn't properly connected

The kit I bought had the black plunger for the acc pump. Threw that out and got me a blue one. Also noticed epoxy on the base bowl for the welch plugs. Cleaned and put on some jb weld around them. And your right it is a piece of cake. Hardest part was the gasket install under the metering valve.

Quadrajets get dogged out a lot by hotrodders but it is actually the best carb out there for street / strip performance cars. They are easy to tune and great on the street and there are stock class cars running 10’s with Quadrajet carburetion.

Hi! Great video on Qjet, I got 67 Firebird 400 project which came with dead Edelbrock 1406, had taken apart like 5 times and still does not idle. I guess the shafts are worn too much and I am considering the Qjet instead. The problem is the Ram Air thing, most of the Qjets for Pontiac have the Ram Air top, I dont have Ram Air, can I somehow remove or delete the Ram Air from top of the carb? And bit offtopic question - what rims are those on your El Camino? Thanks!
@EdontheBeach8 жыл бұрын
??? I don't understand your question. 1) If your engine is GM, it came out of the factory with a q-jet which looks just like the one in my video. 2) there is no 'ram air' to remove or delete from the top of the carb. Ram Air was an option and all the parts for it are air cleaner and hood parts, not carb parts. 3) the Edelbrock 1406 is just an iteration of the old Carter AFB carb...IMO opinion you would be better off with a q-jet.

Would I have to adjust the metering rods if it is backfiring thought the carb?
@EdontheBeach11 жыл бұрын
nothing on the passenger side affects opening the 2 large barrels. they are opened by the linkage shown in this vid on the driver side and the manifold vacum seen by the carb - yes, there are quite a few variants in q-jets from the 60s thru the 80s

Last year I replaced the quadrajet on my boat with a remanufactured one. My engine now runs, but the gassy smell at and just off idle is overwhelming. The idle mixture screws don't seem to help any. We are at high altitude (around 5,000 feet). Is rejetting for altitude what the doctor ordered? If so, who sells the kits for high-altitude rejetting of this carb?

sir i have a holden 355 ci with mild cam , primary jets are 73 and secondary rods are CV.0530L.On the primary side the engine wants to boogy but on secondaries it bogs down. Now here in Australia there is a store selling DP.06886 rods and they say they are the only rods that will perform well. I cant see how this is possible as the rods i have in it have smaller tips than the DPs, possibly am i over fueling the secondary side. Also the secondary vacuum butterflies i have loosened the little grub screw let the tension off then using a screwdriver tensioned them back up to horizontal plus a quarter of a turn , is this correct . Would love your advice on these problems for two reasons as you seem to me to know your stuff and all my mates condemn me for using a quadrajet , as they all love their Holleys , well i dont as i think the quadrajet is truly youneek as is the only truly fully adjustable carby on the market.Please help.Andrew Australia

I have a Question... (a 35+yr. ASE Master Tech w/L-1, guy here). On the Metering Rod's adjustment screw.... I can't find a Spec. For it! Yep!, It's My Own Truck! (Sucks). I've re-built Hundreds! Hopped them up by shaving the Shaft's, die-grinding away area's for more Fuel Volume... While On the Bench apart(at home). Wife, helped Clean Garage! @EdontheBeach8 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure there is a 'spec' for APT. like you i've built a lot of these, i just set it up at about 3 or 4 turns up from the bottom and adjust from there. if yours is lean on the highway, try turning the APT up a quarter turn at a time or maybe your jets are too lean. watch part 2 for a bit of tuning info. i never grind on a carb, so won't offer any advice there - as far as i will go is drill for new bushings
@Caveman48608 жыл бұрын
The 'grinding' I was referring to, was the Tiny drilled holes on the outside of fuel bowl, buy the Secondary's. There's a boss there, I've just eliminated that joining boss, for a little more Fuel volume in the bowl. That's all. I'm at 4.5 turns out now (on rod adjustment). Thank You, for Your Time! 73 -Thom
@EdontheBeach11 жыл бұрын
it doesn't - the top 'flaps' open when the carb sees X amount of vacum as the secondaries ('back bottom flaps') are opened - by the linkage on the driver side.
@MemE-cd6jw10 жыл бұрын
Sir I have watched this video several times. Yesterday I followed your video while taking my Carburetor air horn off. My issue is the fuel pick up tubes. The fuel pick up tubes for the secondaries on the bottom of the air horn were laying in the bowl. I tapped them back into place, and reassembled. Yet they have come loose again after just a short drive. Do you have any suggestions for me on how to keep them in place. Is there a glue or compound I can use so they wont keep coming out?
@EdontheBeach10 жыл бұрын
no, i would not use any type of glue or compound - to much opportunity to mess something up. find some kind of tapered tool, like maybe a pick, down the tube to expand it - BE CAREFUL, don't overdo it. once you expand it too far....

I have a stock 1987 monte carlo, 305 quardajet. motor. How can I find out what size jets I have? It has a 373 rearend, and 28" tires. It turns 2.3k rpm at 70mph and gets a horrible 16 miles per gallon. I knowa 5.0 litre carberated motor can do better then this. I had a 72 mach1 with a motor out of an 85 mustang H.O. and Holly 650. It got 23 mpg highway. After watching your video I am wondering if I can step the jets down 1 size and get better cruising mpg?
@EdontheBeach10 жыл бұрын
the only way would be to open it up and look at them - the 3.73 rear end isn't helping your mpg (but it sure makes for a lot of fun when you push the long pedal). be careful with it, the Qjet on an '87 is wholly computer controlled. i don't mess with those and am not very savvy about them. i have used Guaranteed Carburetor out of Largo, FL for rebuilt computer carbs with excellent results. (no, i don't work or know anyone there)
@starbattles110 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I decided not to jet it and just change secondary needles to DP type. Smooth taper. I heard the stock ones are stepped for economy instead of performance.
@EdontheBeach10 жыл бұрын
that wouldn't do anything for your mpg - in a stock 305 the only time the secondaries will even begin to crack open will be when you stomp at the starting line or cruise over 100mph. the chip that controls your carb, the jets and rods in your car are all set up for economy. nothing to be done about that. there was a time when JET and some other companies, including GM would sell you a performance chip...i doubt they are available anymore. the chip you have cannot be re-flashed

Hello I rejeted a 4ME Qjet. I put 50s Rods/68 jets. and lowered the Metering adjustment in 3 1/2 turns for better gas milage the problem is I don't think I have the rear / Front Breaks set right! I stumbles,no power at start, it Diesels when I shut off key. and sames times back fires. I did this before on my 76 4x4 350 4BBL. and I got it from 9.5 to 18.5 miles pre gallon. I was doing very good on gas.. but! this one is a 84 with a 350 $BBL. with Emission vac lines. the air pump seezed on me so I disconneted all of it! the town I Live don't have Smog Check.which is good. please send any info that will help! I hate the fact that people buy a classic car and throw an Edelbrock 1405 or 6 on the car and chuck the Quadrajet... thinking they are going to get performance 1405 and 1406 are 650 CFM carbs and the stock Quadrajet is larger 687CFM( do know there are 2 sizes) and smaller primaries. The smaller primaries provide better fuel economy for cruising and the larger secondaries provide the fuel for the HP. I cant remember how many times I wish I had a Quadrajet over the 650 Edelbrock that was put on the car i bought... Also the Edelbrock is a square bore carb and the Rochester is a spread bore...

@EdontheBeach10 жыл бұрын
that will depend on your engine. just start turning it it up or down half a turn at a time, then drive your car around. if it gets worse go the other way. when you get close, use 1/4 turns then 1/8 turns until the car acts the way you like it. watch part 2
@starbattles110 жыл бұрын
Hesitation when you first step on gas?(dead spot) then fine? Thats the accelerator pump. The adjustments those screws effect are not effecting what happens when you press that gas peddle. Only effects idle.

Hang on a second, I'm only a few minutes into the video but you just stated that the secondaries don't come into play until almost wide open throttle and in your case a little more than halfway which correlates to over 100 mph. Uuum, what about when you want to pass someone on the road or you just want to tromp on the pedal just to get that 4 barrel rush, just hotrodding around on country roads etc etc? You don't have to be going 100 mph for that, those secondary barrels can come into play well before you get up to that kind of speed.
