This might be one of the most interesting pieces of electronic drum gear I've tried all year. This is my review of the Audiofront eDRUMin. It's a trigger interface the size of a deck of cards that has ALOT of tricks up its sleeve.
(disclaimer: Audiofront sent me this free of charge, but they are not sponsoring this video. All opinions are my own and they had no say over this video)
Features:
1. Hot Spot Suppression
2. Positional Sensing
3. Edge Sense (lets you have 2 zones on a one piezo pad, works on a case by case basis)
4. Works with pretty much any pad or cymbal
5. Cymbal Choke (and even assign a midi note to it if you feel like it) (ableton hates aftertouch messages so that’s why this feature was included)
6. Hi-Hat Controller input
7. Classic Midi, and USB Midi
8. Allows you to use ONE cable to control 3 zone Roland ride cymbals
Incredibly Small
9. Clips onto your drum rack or cymbal stand with included adapter
10. You can use multiple eDRUMin devices at the same time
11. IOS Support
Cons:
1. 3D Printed (understandable because this is a niche product)
2. Power adapter isn’t included in my package (I never needed it though)
3. Beginner electronic drummers will probably find the program hard to learn.
4. The included USB cable is kinda short
Something To Note: If you already have a large audio interface, you could just buy a copy of DSP Trigger, you’ll get similar functionality for $39. The Main advantage of buying eDRUMin, is that you get 5 inputs in a TINY TINY form factor that clips onto stands or drum racks.

Just revisited this, and I must say... Great content as always Justin. I really do wish AudioFront had caught on more as a product & had available stock on their 10 input model. I am however going to look at their DSP TRIGGER software, and at possibly going ahead and getting their 4 input eDrumin unit for a minimalist mobile iMac powered live kit for a possible 80's "darkwave" inspired side project I'm pondering. Imagine something like Joy DIvision/New Order meets NIN, Kyuss, and Sabbath?! Yeah, crazy... HAha! Love the channel! Cheers!

It's funny how Justin refers to "the people at Audiofront" and "they". Audiofront is one guy. Yup. Everything from the hardware to software, technical support, marketing, customer satisfaction - all of it - is ONE person, Rob. There are no other people in the "company". Hat's off to Rob.

This looks awesome I am wondering what the maximum number of 'things' I could attach to this is? For example, using splitters could I attach...(Cymbals are diy with piezos drums are using 2box triggit)? Input 1: Single zone crash + rack tom Input 2: Single zone ride + Floor tom Input 3: Kick + hi hat (with edgesense for 2 zones) Input 4: Snare Pedal input: Hi hat controller.

Hi Justin thank you for this it really looks like the eDRUMin kills those modules But you say it has a ton of inputs I only can see four and are these mono or stereo my question is how many pads can you run on one box for example Kick , dual snare , and one mono tom is that it full and I guess you would have to buy a few linked to make a full kit ? Have I got it all wrong?

2 zones with one peizo is cool. I only realised the other day that Roland positional sensing can work with single peizo pads too (like PD80, PD100 single zone, rubber pads), they have been doing this since the TD-10

Hi Justin, I have an Alesis Trigger IO and while it does the job I have always wondered how much better ia TD10 or newer let's say TD17 would perform against it (always using it as a triggering device, not for use of internal sounds). Now that I found the eDRUMin I don't know if I should go for something like this and forget of exploring any TD module for replacement of the Alesis Trigger IO. In what place would you put the eDRUMin in terms of triggering capabilities? Is there a real improvement of what the Trigger IO can achieve?. Thanks

Hi Justin, any reason this video is unlisted? Thanks! Also, latency is a non-issue for Windows and Mac, as long as you use the right driver type (ASIO for Windows, and whatever equivalent for Mac). I've used Windows exclusively for years and never have any latency issues. A 20-year old PCI interface called the M-Audio Delta 44 (or 66) with an OMNI I/O breakout box can give me as low as 2.0ms... which is superb for e-drum playing, with Superior 3. Latency is definitely not better on a Mac. It's just that you've got to know how to set your stuff. ASIO always gives the lowest latency, for Windows users, and even the free Asio4All driver kicks a lot of butt. Just an FYI. Thanks man!

@Clairvoyant81
@Clairvoyant81 4 жыл бұрын
@@landonp629 Yeah, but as I said in another post: For an average e-drum kit, you're going to need 3 eDrumIns.... that's 3 USB connections, a lot of switching between different eDrumIns in the software during setup and potential cross-talk issues for $450. If you want some room for expansion, which would be where this actually gets better than just getting a small Roland module, you're at $600 and 4 of these things for a fairly messy solution at that point. Basiicaly: Sure, I can use multiple eDrumIns, but it would just be a lot easier to have a solution with enough inputs for an average full kit and a bit of expansion options.

@@Clairvoyant81 I cannot see a case where you'd ever need more than two of them for any 6 peice standard setup. You could do a basic 4 piece on a single module alone. On two units, i can power: 4 toms, 1 kick, 1 snare, 3 crash, 1 ride, 1 china and 1 splash. Not saying its for everyone, and would certainly like a single unit better. But the two units would actually allow for easier cable management on my rack. Just depends on what you need I suppose.

A couple of notes: 1. All trigger processing is done in the eDRUMin box, so it doesn't add notable latency. The program is just to let you change settings. 2. This of course isn't a module it's a trigger interface. No internal sounds, all that comes from your computer. 3. My setup to get sounds: is Reaper with EZdrummer 2, but any drum plugin will work. 4. The eDRUMin obviously is not supposed to replace an entire drum module. Its an add on to expand your current drum set, or for people like hybrid drummers that only need a couple of pads in the first place. Kind of like the people that would buy a Roland tm2. So if I get this right: You plug it in your USB port, then you use the software to calibrate let's say your kick, once it's done, you close the software and Pro Tools should see it as a USB controller and it becomes a kick trigger?

Hi Justin, although Apple computers have slightly lower latency out of the box any Intel i3, i5 or i7 equipped Windows 10 PC (put an SSD in if not so equipped) is close enough not to matter. The real trick is choosing the right audio interface like you did with the Focusrite Scarlett. Instead of using Reaper as your host try downloading Brad Robinson's Cantabile. He has a guide called "Glitch Free" on how to turn off all power saving settings. Once that is done you have a professional grade "VST machine" that pros go on tour with and musicians rely on for every day gigs. The forum over there is fantastic. EDIT - did some reading on vdrums about round trip latency. That would be an interesting topic down the road. Will try Oblique to try to figure out what the actual RTL is with eDRUMin -> Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 -> Superior Drummer 2 -> UMC202HD USB audio interface.

Douglas Lippi - Neither the device, nor its software generates sound, but only converts the pedal and pad hits to MIDI and acts as a USB MIDI controller. So all the sounds have to come from a VST or AU or AAX instrument running in your DAW.

- I doubt the eDrumIn software adds any kind of latency. As far as I see, that's just a configuration tool that changes the settings of the controller. I'd assume you could just quick the configuration tool after you're done and still use the device in your drum software. If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised if the latency with this is pretty good, as it's basically a configurable trigger to MIDI device. - Seems that the configuration software could use a "beginner mode", offering some presets for widely used pads and cut-down settings to make things easier. That said, this seems to be a fairly small company and a good preset library like that that actually gives good results for all "supported" pads is a lot of work. - The one thing that keeps me from ordering this is: Too few inputs on one device. Sure, I can use multiple eDrumIns and still get a decent price, but: According to the manual, the crosstalk filter doesn't work between different devices (makes sense). Also, each one of them uses a USB port, obviously... for my current, medium-sized set (3 toms, snare, bass, hi-hat, 2 crash, ride) I'd already need 10 inputs plus the hi-hat pedal, i.e. 3 of these. _If_ they work on a USB hub, that's not too much of an issue, but that's another unknown I'd rather not have to deal with.
@65Drums
@65Drums 4 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, 1. you are correct it does not add much latency. All processing is done on the device. The program is just for changing settings. That latency speech I made at the end of the video was just to tell people to get the right computer hardware. 2. I agree with you on the beginner mode 3. Yeah this isn't made to replace a whole module. It's just an add on, or expansion device. For the people that would buy something like a Roland TM2 module.
