The '59 Eldorado Brougham, as usual was a masterpiece from the genius of Pininfarina. It was also the first Caddy with involvement by the Italian design house, and then decades later came the Allante which was meant to be a competitor of the Mercedes SL.
@nlpnt3 күн бұрын
Pininfarina had little to no design input on this, the company was contracted to build a car that GM already had developed but couldn't semi-handbuild in America in a cost- and time-effective way. That being said, Pininfarina the man and Bill Mitchell who had just taken the top job at GM Design when Harley Earl retired certainly respected each others' design work and influenced each other for the next 20 years.

Ed: You did NOT comment on how the roofline of the 1959 Eldorado Brougham looked VERY similar to the much more streamlined '61 Caddy's!
@jamesstuart33464 күн бұрын
What's ironic about these cars is that the chassis were shipped by boat all the way to Italy where the bodies were built by Pininfarina and then shipped back to Caddy's Fleetwood plant for completion. The result was a car that only car nuts would recognize as "not a standard assembly-line Cadillac"

I grew up in the 1960s and fondly recall my formative years being completely enamored with all things automotive. I had an uncle who was a Cadillac man, and traded every spring for the latest model. So I was very aware of the specialness of the ElDorado. In fact , he told me that the ElDorado was “ the pinochle of Automotive Technology and design, as they had several. My favorite was his 1967 model, as it was to me the most stunning of them all!

If you put the 1959 Brougham next to a 1961 production model you will see where that model got its styling cues. The plan was to make 200 Eldo Broughams for the 1959 and 1960 model year however since one chassis fell into the water while they were loading it on the ship in 1959, they made 101 in 1960 to stick with the 200 number.

I had a 1963 six window Sedan DeVille, and the roofline of the 1959 Eldorado Brougham certainly predicted the '61-64 six window sedan Cadillac rooflines, Over all it seems like a prototype of the '63-'64 Cadillacs.

I can’t believe some of the arguments on FB from people that SWEAR it’s not a ‘59 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Never mind that the car is super easily searchable, but they’ll argue the point. Yes…..I had read that Bill Mitchell like the styling so much on the Brougham’s, that he had all the senior GM divisions adopt a lot of its styling cues for 1961-‘64. It was definitely ahead of its time! ❤️
@catjudo14 күн бұрын
My favorite is actually a '64. It's all squared off in mid 60s styling language but is the last year of true Caddy tail fins. There was a black sedan at the gas station I used to pass for a while and it looked like some Gothic pimp-mobile from another planet. Oh, how I wanted THAT one!

The roofline "predicted" the rooflines of the 1961-64 G.M. "C" body six window sedans (Oldsmobile 98, Buick Electra, and Cadillac DeVille) Actually, The 1959 Eldorado Brougham looks like a prototype for the 1963-64 Cadillacs overall. Truly a "years ahead" design!

Confused boomer here, but when you grow up in a small town without a lot of wealthy folks, you never saw these (only 1320 made) or the Mark II, probably never would have without the internet. I suspect if the regular 59 looked like this it would not have been garish enough for the times. Thanks for sharing. Those 60 back up lights, or afterburners always looked like the coke machines where you pulled the bottle out. A beautiful car.
@mexicanspec3 күн бұрын
What model are you saying there were 1320 made?
@DrOlds72983 күн бұрын
@@mexicanspec IIRC they made 99 in '59 & 101 in '60. And just under 800 combined in 1957-58. Also recall hearing that the Eldorado Broughams & Mark II Continentals were $17,000 cars in an era when a little over $2200 got you 'out the door' on many new Chevys/Fords/Plymouths (Less if you bought the 'Stripped' models!) & $5000+ was Caddy/Lincoln/Imperial money. And $17,000 would get you a nice brand new big & fancy Brick Home out in the 'burbs!!!
@DrOlds72983 күн бұрын
Also recall that the reason why there were 101 '60s but only 99 '59s was they planned on 100 units each year, and they were all built on Special Order, but one of the '59's was totaled while in transit from Italy,and a '60 was built to replace it for the customer. I've also only ever seen in person two 1957-58s & one '59 model ....all in museum collections or a car show though one of the 1957-58s I 'did' see get driven off it's transporter. I've never seen a '60 in person yet?

Funny that although the 59 and 60 Eldorado Brougham is much more rare than the 57/58, they aren’t worth much, likely because they’re so like the regular production models. I’ve seen a few of them, and if you don’t know what you’re looking at, it doesn’t register that you’re seeing an exceedingly rare car.

One should notice that Lincoln actually started the trend of making cars more square to reduce the hype from the "space race" theme. First with the Continental kk-2 (56-57) and then Ford adopted the style for all its division models, with the distinctive Mercury Turnpike (57-58). Yes, John Najjar was the chief designer and we can safely say that Ford was well ahead on the trend before GM and Chrysler. To be honest, GM cars looked nice but very dull even by 1960 and Chrysler went even more exotic bonkers by 1962. And, if we really squeeze the idea, the Thunderbird in 1954 introduced the world the idea of a small and square and sports car!
