A great informative session for one of the most beautiful cattleyas. I didn't know about the different color forms. It's always good to find good roots in the pot. All you need now is a bit of patience. Take care and happy growing, Ed.

I have plenty of patience Res but if I can treat dowiana the way I think is necessary I'm expecting it to be a very quick grower. Once it start growing after being mounted I will use the Mars hydro led to supply it with the light it will need. Anyhow we'll see how things go and not get carried away!! Thanks for your comment and take good care. Ed.

I have possibly 2 years to see which dowiana I have... got it from a French eBay seller. Good quality juvenile and gave me 2 new growths last year. This year it’s growing only one, but it’s a considerable size jump in that one growth! Guesstimate, 2 years to go 😆 thank you so much for this video! Fabulous roots!! 🙌🏼👍🏼

I have a dowiana, too. Mine is still a very young plant (I guess a year younger than the one you show in your video) and I have only had it since November. But it made it through winter and now it started to produce one or even two new growths. Love the roots on yours - mine is working on improvements in that department.

Once these dowianas settle in to the medium and conditions you give them they are notably fast growers. I hope yours continues on its present path and grows into a nice specimen. Thanks for the comment and take care, Ed.

Thank you for making this "Spotlight" video. I have my eye on a C. dowiana 'Rosita' for sale at one of our local nurseries. It's a bit pricey so I want to complete some research before investing in one. Appreciate that you showed your plant and the new root growth. That encourages me to continue to consider this orchid for my collection. Stay safe. Keep those videos coming.

Good evening pat. Pleased you found the video helpful and if you decide to add one of these to your collection the two main thing, in my opinion, are that you should give them as much light as possible ...with plenty of sun, and never put them to bed with wet feet.!! Ed.

I have 2 Aurea, one normal and one Rosita and they are all seedlings. So I will need years and years of patience if I to see them bloom and if I don't kill them. I have learned they love water but also they like to dry out properly. One of my Aurea is getting big :) Will be watching your Dowianas with special interest Ed

If you give them the correct conditions especially the sunshine they grow very quickly and should be able to flower in two or three years. Make sure they are dry before putting them to bed!! Best of luck with them. Ed.

Just the talk I needed! Ive just purchased a hybrid with 50% dowiana. Its a Potinara Susan Fender 'Cinnamon Stick'. I did some research before I purchased to see if I at least stood a chance of growing it. I grow outside, temps are temperate usually with the very occasional hot day (over 35C). I generally fert very weakly. Thanks Ed, you always have interesting videos. I dont comment often but I do watch them all. Fingers crossed for my dowiana hybrid!

I hope you do very well with it Diane ....please make sure the roots are dry by nightfall. It's supposed to be our summer here and this morning at 7am the temperature was 9c but expected to rise to 14c by the afternoon. The middle of summer and I'm having to put heat on in the greenhouse and the Mars Hydro Lights for the cattleyas. Thanks for your comment Diane and take care. Ed

@@EdsOrchids I will take note of your advice Ed thanks. It arrived Friday 10th July and I gave it a very little bit of water as it had been kept very dry for the delivery. Its not been watered since as its winter here and can get down to 5C

These plants need to be kept at much higher temperatures than that Diane, somewhere around 14c, Ed

@@EdsOrchids Thanks Ed. I've kept it inside since the delivery with the overnight temps being so low. Looks like that will be an inside plant over the winter.

Question not about dowiana. Do you know anyone currently growing Phrags in coconut husk chips (CHC)? I was reading an interesting article from a nursery here in the US using it for growing their Paphs (I've never in my life seen a Paph with a root system like they pictured, an absolutely solid mass) and Phrags in it because of the water retention combined with air holding capacity. They went into great detail on how to prepare the chips, which includes a 12-hour soak in a calcium nitrate solution, before use. I've got two of the same plant (kovachii x schlimii) and the CHC sitting around unused, figured I'd take one out of bark and put it in CHC to see if there is any difference.

No I don't know anyone who uses coconut husks Michael. I don't particularly like the stuff but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it. I always like to do things differently, some success and some failures but at least I tried. Give it a go Michael and keep an eye on the plants. I would have thought that the paphs would be kept too wet but having said that I have put one of my large paphs on the drip system to see how it will react to the continual wetness, Ed.

Wish I could have one in descent price! Oh boy they are expensive! I do have an access to seedlings from where I work but my boss is hesitant to give it to me which is totally understandable.

I don't understand why your boss is so hesitant in letting you have a seedling.....just give his shins a kick and tell him you want one or you're going to resign!!!! Ed.

A bit too dear for me Spencer......can you be tempted that much?......and why is it for sale?.....has it previously flowered?.......if so were the flowers as they should be?.....if they cannot answer these questions positively then leave it alone. Only my advise!! Ed.

@@EdsOrchidsi don't know if i can sustain the plant in my humidity...however I am growing a C. violacea which is supposed to require similar humidity and temperatures. Otherwise all of the questions you have are affirmative. I will pass until I have a greenhouse or growth chamber in the future.
