Wiki says his career petered out after the Fall of the USSR. Of course, people could then listen to whatever they wanted and the state-approved artists lost their captive audience and official sponsorship. But he was so popular in his day and almost overnight there was the commie-nostalgia generation. Perhaps he couldn't adapt to having to market himself?
