Educating Oz (Auf Wiedersehen Pet Spin Off)

As a massive fan of Auf Wiedersehen Pet I decided to see if I could find any spin off episodes that may or may not have been on TV. My search led me to this episode called 'Educating Oz'. It was made in 1986, just after the second series, and stars only Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail. None of the other cast members appear. It's only 25 minutes long and was produced by Tyne Tees as an educational programme to highlight AIDS awareness in the 80's. Although not written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais it's still extremely funny.

it shows how respected AWP was as a tv show, that it was used to provide vital healthcare education during the midst of an epidemic. No show that i've seen recently would be able to do that.

Steve Matthews so this is not in the series then ? I watched this when i was very young i loved it but i forgotten a lot of it now, i'm going to be getting the d.v.d's soon enough. When i saw this i thought it was part of an episode 😂

I think it was only seen in the Tyne Tees region - the interviewer is Paul Frost, who anchored Northern Life, the local news programme up there!

Educating Oz - a 1986 Tyne Tees TV film made to help educate us on AIDS - the film shows us how little we knew about AIDS 30 years ago .. Probably the only 1980's PSA on AIDS that makes reference to the phrase 'Shirt Lifters' 😳 but I can see the logic behind the film. Thanks for posting.

That Doctor simply HAS to be the brother of he who portrayed Bridey from Brideshead Revisited. Even before checking his name, I thought it actually was him, and that maybe he just dubbed his hair black for the series. The end credits include Dr Peter Jones. the part of Sebastian's older brother was played by Simon Jones.

Tyne Tees should have chosen Rod Griffith as the Presenter as opposed to Paul Frost. Griffith was also a Presenter for Tyne Tees & the supposed inspiration for the Viz legend Roger Mellie!

Moxey was a strange choice for Oz to suggest catching aids. It was Wayne and Bomber who were sexually promiscuous. He was also out of character when tolerant of homosexuals but obviously the language and attitude was toned down. The doctor shouldn't give up his day job.

Oz isn't particularly homophobic from what I've seen, as long has you don't rub his face in it or suggest him of it. Like he said he's a man of the world, but I think he'd rather not talk about it. Moxey was the logical choice because during season 1 he kept getting ill alot.

Had I penned the sequels, I'd have re-cast Ray Winston so he could reprise his character 'Colin' from the first season to make up the 7.
