Well dressed, well spoken, well presented, showing off his Italian language skills. Thanks for showing this very interesting speech, old politics but relevant to our time.

He made a lovely, fairly well-researched presentation. However, I would not refer to his "showing off" his language skills. I am a native speaker and know the Comedy intimately and still struggled to understand his pronunciation.

I'm coming back to this for my third watch, this was just one of the best lectures I've ever heard, I find myself constantly pausing the video to absorb the information he's sharing. The point about the fall of the tower of Babel introducing a gap between words and meaning, which itself is a further exaggeration of the gap between words and meaning introduced during the fall from heaven, since angels convey pure meaning, was brilliant, I've never heard that connection before.

As I was listening to this, I was thinking of Michael's point about hylomorphism, how body and soul are a co-dependent union. To complete difficult physical labor, you must have fortitude, a strong soul. Meanwhile, to undertake fasting and prayer, or the mortification of sins, labor for the soul, you must have a well-fed body. Otherwise you'll exhaust. As Michael was talking about Dante's political background with the church and the state, I wonder if this is an allegory for the body and the soul? The state, the political, represents the body, which supports the physical competence of the people. Meanwhile, the church is the soul, the moral will of the people. They are not the same, but they are co-dependent. A church needs an effective state to enforce peace (as Michael discussed near the end), and a state is dependent upon the church to define the right from wrong to enforce. Just like with the body and soul, if you value one to the exclusion of the other, both collapse, and yet one is eternal and the other is temporal. We should never confuse them, nor think in our conceit that we can unify them in perfect harmony before that great day, when He is who Priest and King brings both together in Paradise.
@uneqejam4 ай бұрын
Unified or not, they SHOULD BE in Perfect Harmony, otherwise your comparison of body and soul wouldn't stand either - the seed of all unhappiness, and as a result of physical disease, stands in the quality of relations between body and soul, and in a similar way, the root of all problems in a country stands in the quality of the relations between Church and State, otherwise, if this is not taken into account we'd have the mess we have now in the end, we don't need to go far to find an example for that......

Looking forward to this lecture! I really enjoyed Michael's lectures on Christopher Columbus and George Washington, I think explaining history to average people is one of his great talents. I don't like the "own the libs" schtick that he usually does, I think he's at his best when he takes the high road and helps the west understand our history first.

An apt observation. I would amend your comment by saying that it is his own the libs routine is what funds his true gift of sharing history and philosophy.

I've never understood the difficulty people have in answering the question, 'What about those who never heard of Christ?' The Biblical narrative provides two answers: (1) God judges people according to the knowledge/light they were given (Romans 2:14-16), and (2) Christ descends into Hades to preach to the lost souls of the past (1 Peter 3:19). No need to invoke God's "Who are you" declaration to Job.

Very interesting point that Christ’s punishment could only be in place of all mankind if the governing justice had authority over all mankind. I don’t agree with any of this, but I respect that logic.

The veneration of the Eucharist, the Body of Christ in the form of the consecrated host, had been regarded since Rudolf I as one of the central expressions of the Habsburgs’ strength of faith. The ruler once met a priest who was carrying the host to a sick person for the sacrament of Extreme Unction. As a sign of his humility before the sacrament, Rudolf is said to have given the priest his horse and accompanied him on foot. He would not ride the horse again as he refused since Christ his Lord had been on it. I hope as a Catholic that Dante's understanding of Rudolf was more nuanced than "that unfaithful bridegroom to Italy".
